boma used to be one of our favorite restaurants at WDW. the last time we ate there (october or november), we found that our favorite item on the buffet, the prime rib, was replaced with a different cut of meat - strip loin maybe? it really wasn't to our liking in the same way that the prime rib was, and when we asked about the change, the answer was that prime rib was being removed from all the restaurants across disney property. we were actually quite upset about it (like i said, it really was our favorite, and pretty much our main reason for eating there!!!), especially since the menu posted out front still listed prime rib as being served...

in the meantime, we've been back to WDW another time or two, and have eaten at other restaurants on property that still listed prime rib on their menus. grr...

i recently read a recent review of boma that said the prime rib was really good. so i'm wondering if the prime rib is back, or if the reviewer just mistook the carved strip loin for prime rib.

if anyone has been to boma lately, could you report on the meat carving station? is it prime rib or strip loin?

thanks! :thumbsup2

I was there in early December and I distinctly remember that they had the Prime Rib at dinner time.

I've heard varying reports that it's there, and then not there, and then back again...so I'm just as confused as you (I know, likely not much help). The most recent report I've read (from mid January) says it was on the buffet....

i wonder if the prime rib is now in rotation like how the rest of the menu items vary during the week. it used to be prime rib was always available, but now maybe it's only on certain days?

anyone else notice this?

I've not been there since Sept. so can't comment on what's available, but I have noticed several buffet locations still list "prime rib" when I darn well know what I'm eating is not. Most of the time some sort of sirloin. Maybe it IS a rotation thing.

We will be there Saturday for dinner and the next Saturday for breakfast, so I can let you know after next week. I can't wait for Zebra Domes!

We ate there last month and our server told us about what selections were on what days...UGH, I cannot remember what they were though. I can tell you that we were there for dinner on a Friday and they did not have prime rib though. I remember the rotation was something like Mon/Wed, Tues/Fri & Wed/Sat and then Sunday was chef's choice. I do remember that she told us that Saturday was bbq ribs though.

Possible someone knows what I'm talking about with the rotation?

We were there on a Tuesday in February, and no prime rib. The coca cola pork loin that we really liked wasn't on the buffet that night, either. It seemed to us that the selections were better back in 2006. However, the butternut squash soup was out, so my DH loved that.

We still enjoyed our dinner at Boma, and I'm sure we'll go back. I wish I could tell you more about the rotations, but I'm just not sure about that.

I was at Boma in January and they had prime rib.....of course, I ate about 3 plates full of pecans encrusted salmon. It was delicious....:wizard:

A month ago it was the strip loin. We spoke to a chef and he said the prime rib was removed last fall to save costs. The strip loin looks similar, so people may be mistaking it for prime rib. But it certainly doesn't taste the same.

I can tell you, 100%, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that in early December, it was prime rib. Yes I know the difference (both in appearance and in taste).

I have talked to others who have told me, and would know, that the prime rib has been on the buffet, and then off the buffet, in the course of a week's trip, being replaced with the strip steak/loin when it was off. I've read reports (as recent as mid January) that said, specifically, that it was the prime rib on the buffet...and that's was in direct address to this very question, because it seems to come and go.

Maybe, as some suggested, it's now part of the rotation and only out on some nights. Maybe it's a supply issue. Maybe the cost is fluctuating through their supplier and they're getting it when they can, and subbing when they have to. I don't know. Likewise, I don't know if the change is permanent or temporary.

What I do know is that I wouldn't jump to conclusions as to whether you'll find it, on any given visit, or not.

ammo, that is pretty much the same thing we were told. i'll be looking forward to gracienate and patriciaH's reports on what is there.

assuming the people who responded are right in their prime rib vs. strip loin knowledge ;), my guess is that the prime rib could have been brought back into rotation...but pilferk may be correct in guessing that maybe it just comes onto the buffet when they can obtain it from the supplier at a good price?

from what i've gathered, it seems like:
Tuesday - no prime rib (or coca-cola pork loin, but yes on b'nut squash soup)
Thursday - prime rib
Friday - PatriciaH will report
Saturday - gracienate will report; bbq ribs are supposed to be there

SalukiPride and ammo - by any chance, do you remember what day of the week you were there?

our kids were also bummed on our last two visits...the kids offerings used to be the standard disney chicken strips, macaroni and cheese, etc. but on our last two visits they had fried chicken wings, which my kids wouldn't eat. the second time, we said something to the server who gladly brought out some "chicken nuggets" from the back, but they were like the kind of frozen chicken nuggets with a fine breading, not the real-white-meat-freshly-cooked chicken strips/nuggets that you usually find at disney.

since we really loved boma a lot and ate there often, we feel bad to not go back, but i'm not going to spend a lot of money on a buffet and not be able to eat the things we really like. don't get me wrong - there are a lot of other fantastic things on the boma buffet, but the prime rib (and the chicken strips for the kids) was really our #1 reason to go there.

We were there in January and it was strip loin. I can see where people may think it is prime rib. We also asked the chef and were told the same thing, it was removed last fall. DH and I didn't mind it. But it was definately not as good as prime rib. :sad1:

I had the beef loin in January and I actually prefer that cut of meat to prime rib (which I find to be far too fatty - sorry) so I was happy. I thought it was delicious.

Todd&Copper, i agree that the strip loin is less fatty (and probably healthier), but I also found it to be less tender and juicy...also, it didn't seem to hold the flavor of the wood grill as much.

In the meantime, I have emailed Disney. Let's see if they have an answer for me!

I will be interested to hear your answer. We had dinner at Boma at the end of Sept. My DH loved the prime rib (he had seconds)..it was still there for sure then. I booked a ressie for our June trip regardless..Iam a soup fan so worries for me;)

I agree. I love their soup!

I was there Monday and Friday, which are two different rotations. It was strip loin both nights.

As a follow up in this discussion, Disney is adding a "surcharge" during holiday seasons (broadly defined). I had the strip loin at Boma during a non-surcharge period. Could it be that they are running the prime rib on surcharge days? That would seem fair, although it would cut into their desire for higher profits.
