Anyone been to Beaches Turks and Caicos?

We took a Disney Dream cruise over NYE last year. It was a great vacation and my son had a great time! He is two and a half now and we are looking for another vacation in the January/February 2013 timeframe. He will be just shy of 3 at that time. If we chose the DCL route we might wait until after he turns 3 to take advantage of the free kids club.

I was just looking at the Beaches Turks and Caicos online. Holy cow their prices are insane! Just wondering if anyone has been there and can compare it to a Disney cruise. I love DCL, but I would also love to try different places and resorts. Any feedback, positive or negative would be great!!

We took a Disney Dream cruise ...

We're in the same "boat":rotfl: - we cruised the Dream and were looking at Beaches as they seem to have a good program for families. When I saw the pricing, it made me feel a bit better about how much DCL is costing me!

I do hope you get replies because I was pleasantly surprised at what we got for our money on the Dream.

A couple of insights.....after cruising a LOT for the last 12 years, we did our first All-Inclusive (ever!) last week, and really, really loved it. My husband's impression was that it was like a giant cruise ship...only the drinks were free. ;)
But....be prepared for a lot of walking. Getting from one part of the resort to another could be a long hot walk. We weren't at Beaches, but from the map of it, it's about the same.

We HAVE spent 10 days in Provo on Turks and Caicos, and positively loved it. We were in a condo on the "other" side of the island from where Beaches is, but we did go to the beach where the resorts are. It's a really nice beach, but trust me, it's not like the pictures. The hotels/resorts are pretty much on top of eachother......but it really won't matter, with your son being young, my guess is you'll use the pools more than the ocean.

Staying in a condo, we found the food in restaurants on the island to be really, really good (better than what we had at our all-inclusive) but VERY expensive, so if we were to go to T & C again, an all-inclusive would be the way to do it.
Our kids were older, so we did a few things around the island, like touring the Conch Farm, and taking a boat trip at night to see the "glow worms" in the ocean. There were some people from one of the all-inclusives on that boat tour, they were 5 days into their 7 night stay, and that was the first time they'd left the resort. At the time, I thought it was sad that they hadn't at least toured the island (which you MUST do) but now that I've seen what the all-inclusives offer, I can understand it better.

We were at a resort south of Cancun, about an hour's drive, last week. The TOTAL cost, including airfare and transportation, a suite at the resort....was $1300 per person. WAY cheaper than most of our Disney cruises, especially with the airfare included.

I was doing a search to see if the Beaches Resorts have any discussion boards, because the resort (Grand Palladium) that we went to has a HUGE dis board....and came up with a thread from the DIS two years ago. The link is below. But there are other posts on other sites, if you do a google search for Beaches Resorts Discussion Boards.

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2623377

One thing I wanted to add about the food at our all-inclusive....the resorts are Brazilian-owned, and cater to far more international travelers than what I believe Beaches does. I have a feeling that Beaches, especially since they really center on families and kids, would have a lot more American choices.

And by the way, don't be surprised if this thread gets moved to the Community Board. That happens sometimes when the discussion isn't strictly "cruise" based.

We have been to Beaches T & C - we loved it! The resort was easy to navigate (stayed in the French section). I felt like I did as much if not more walking on the Fantasy as T&C. Food was good & my children (12 & 10) always found something to eat. The drinks were good (says my DH - I was pregnant when we went so no yummy drinks of the day for me ). We spent a ton of time on the beach & enjoyed it. Any questions?

Anyone been to an adults only AI? I am thinking that will be our next vacation after DCL. I want somewhere quite and not spring break, KWIM?

DH has heard great things from a co-worker about B/T&C. We looked into it for spring break but *wow* it's expensive. I'm concerned that all the activities seem to be outside. I'm a fair-skinned redhead and can't spend all day in the sun or on the water like the rest of my family. Is there shade readily available? Are there rainy day activities?

I can't compare to DCL, as we're planning our first DCL cruise, but we did Beaches T & C this past January with DS, who was 3 at the time. It was, by far, the best vacation we've ever had.

We looked into DCL last year too, and chose Beaches for the following reasons:

1) Dude was (and is) quite shy - he would never go to the kids club (I doubt he will go on DCL this year, but at least we have some hope), so we wanted a place with stuff for kids, but with in-room babysitting that he is used to, that is safe. It was moot too, last year, as he wasn't potty trained at the time we were booking, so we would not have been able to use the kids club.

2) It was a good place for us to try out characters. We went from him screaming and running the other way at the beginning of the week to him hugging Elmo and Abby by the end of the week - would have been more challenging to manage on the cruise, from what I've read - we could avoid them easily, as the place is quite large.

3) It has nice things for grown-ups too - this was really the difference from other AIs we've done. It was truly the best mix of kid-friendly and adult-friendly out of all the places we've been. (3 other AIs- 2 with kid, 1 without) The food was definitely above average (we're foodies).

4) Dude loves beaches and pools. Beaches does both really, really well. The beach is truly amazing. Happy kid = happy parents. We were on a very mellow schedule, which we loved.

Other things for us - no time change (we're in Ontario), direct flight, short trip from the airport to the resort.

So... was it expensive? Yep, but it was very close to being truly all-inclusive. (Tips included, which is rare. Wifi included too, I think but I might be wrong.) Unless you book extra activities, you can spend virtually nothing the whole week. We did 3 activities but could happily have done none (character breakfast, sailing with characters, and an off-resort "submarine boat" thing). As I add up all the extras for the cruise (extra night in a hotel, transport to and from the port, drinks, tips for room service, the other tips, excursions, etc.) I can see DCL adding up - not to what we paid for Beaches, but getting closer.

We are not going to do Beaches (or DCL for that matter) every year by any means. It was a special year for us, so we planned, saved, and splurged. We hope to go back, but not for a while.

On a bright note, DCL is seeming more affordable in comparison, despite the extras!

As for activities being outside - I can't really comment. The kids stuff was inside or outside. We didn't do any adult activities, because, well, we don't much - we go on vacation to spend quality time with our son. There are lots of nice inside places (the most amazing French café, for example) where we escaped for quiet time. The beaches and pools had lots of shade. It rained for all of 10 minutes on one day, and everyone just stayed outside, so I can't comment on that. Some of the kids stuff was inside (baking cookies with Cookie Monster, for example) and I seem to recall the same for adult activities.

We were on a cruise during our "babymoon" back in 2008 (HAL) - and the one thing we didn't like was always having to work around the (necessary) schedules on a ship. AIs mostly do away with that. I come from a highly scheduled, fairly high pressure work environment, so I like the laid back AI approach to vacations. We're not planning on trying to do everything on our DCL cruise (not sure how much action our highlighters will be getting...), and I'm not too worried about it, but it is a bit of a shift.

Hope that helps! I read about a gagillion reviews on forums, and that helped us plan... sound familiar? :goodvibes

I have actually been there twice the last time being in 2010. The last time I was there I got married at the resort. ABSOLUTELY love that resort. Each night there is entertainment which for the most part is pretty good. They also have a kids program if you need a break from the kids for some adult time. My kids never used the program so I can not give you details about that. I did however use the in room babysitting services for a couple hours one night with out any issue at all. There are various places to eat on property some places I liked more than others but had no problems finding something I liked each night. I can not give you a comparison as I am taking my first Disney cruise this September. But one thing I can say is that both times I went I never felt like it was crowded or that there were a zillion kids running around. It is truly a place I will visit every so often...even without our kids.

After our Carnival cruise stopped at Grand Turk in April, I booked a trip to Beaches T&C for Spring Break 2013. I was going to cancel our Disney cruise. But, I couldn't find any decent flights. Airfare was going to cost us almost 3K. I couldn't find direct flights. I just couldn't imagine spending that much just to get there. So, for now, we will cruise.

Beaches Turks & Caicos is our favorite resort and we have been there several times. My wife is actually heading back at the end of August and again in October.

We started going there a few years back and fell in love with the place. And one of the nice things if you are a scuba diver, is its included in the price. *Carol Potter is the dive shop manager and she has a great staff. If anyone wants to ask her questions or if you have divers with special needs, its good to contact her ahead of time. Beaches Turks & Caicos dive team *has gone a step further to enable disabled guests by receiving their Handicap Scuba Association (HSA) certification. Being disabled military, thats kind of a nice feature for me. Speaking of that, military active, reserves, retired, ect get a 10 percent discount.

Our favorite suites are the Parrot Cay One Bedroom Honeymoon Suite (H1). Also, have your travel agent request suite 719 or 720. The reason being is this these two suites are right behind the dive shop, water sports & instruction pool and just forward of that are the dive boats. These two suites are also second floor with a nice balcony. Plus these two suites have a decent view of Grace Bay. I have pictures of the view if someone wants to see them. The trick to getting one of these suites is to contact the sales manager (Tanya Swann) and the zone manager (Rommel Forbes) *on property. Of course its always subject to availability but a little advanced lobbying goes a long way.

If you have family that likes to snorkel - make sure you check out some gear from the dive shack, head to the water and turn left - go down the beach about 300 yards to the reef in front of Coral Gardens. From the shore, you can wade right in and see some of the most amazing sea life and some StingRays once in a while. It is a protected reef though so dont go inside the clearly marked area. JoJo the Dolphin, also frequents that area of the Bay too. He's legendary down there.

But if you head down early in the morning....say - 9am, you might see one of the large Sea Turtles swimming through.

They are very curious and will swim right up to you at times! *I have spent countless hours on that reef system - love it there!

I went to Beaches T&C in 2011 with a infant and a two year old. We have done Disney Cruise in 2010 and 2012, as well as DH and I have done several other cruises on other lines.

We choose to do the Beaches resort primarily because cruising would not allow us to bring our children into the pool because neither one of them were toilet trained at the time. It was a nice vacation but cost wise, it was (for us) price-wise as much as or more than a Disney Cruise. Over all I gave it a "B"

I liked being on the land and having more space to walk around. They had 16 different restaurants ranging from coffee shops/cafes to sit down to buffets. We generally try to do the sit down restaurants for lunch and dinner and alternate between buffet and sit down for breakfast. They also had two adult only restaurants.

Pros:
Nice grounds. We were in the French Village, which was newer than the Caribbean Village, both which had single family (hotel like) rooms. The Italian Village was out of league since it had suites and was very $$$ for our family of four. The Caribbean Village was kind of shabby and I was glad that we didn't stay in that part of the resort (Frankly I would have been disappointed.)

Sesame Street activities and shows.

Kids club was nice, but Disney does it better. Kids club was free to all children and I don't think reservations were necessary. They had activities and character appearances, but I don't think anyone can hold a candle to Disney and their programming.

Pool was WOW! They had several pools, each village had their own pools but you could swim where ever you wanted. And did I mention the swim up bar?!? Huge pools that were gorgeous and warm!!

Water park area with toddler area, water slides, lazy river and casual dining. All kids can swim in the water, no CDC regulations. And the water is filtered and chlorinated.

Beautiful beach with catamarans, snorkels and lots of places to sit.

Opportunities to get off the resort, but we stayed put.

Free alcoholic drinks, even the top shelf stuff.

Cons:
The restaurants (sit down) were easy to get into (minimal wait) but remember we had two very young children so we tend to eat earlier. However, the meals were L O N G! Two to three hours sometimes. That was obviously too long for my kids, and for us adults too.

Because there were 16 restaurants and we went to different ones each meal, you never get the same wait staff. There was no one who knew that I don't drink coffee, or that my kids like apple juice. I have no idea how they would handle food allergies.

The servers/staff were nice, but they lacked the "over and above" attitude by the CMs on Disney. They had automatic gratuities built in to the cost, but because you never saw the same staff person twice (with the exception of your housekeeper) there was really no incentive to be the best they can be. I have to say in comparison to cruising I was really disappointed and while their were some great staff people there and everyone did their job, overall it was lacking that special touch.

Having two small children, we used a stroller whenever we walked as the walk could be ten to fifteen minutes from one end of the resort to the other. Most (90%) of it was stroller (and wheelchair/mobility) friendly. However to get to the toddler water park area, I had to go up and down several stairs. We always had to carry up and down the stroller. Not cool. Also while most of the women's rooms had diaper changing areas, most of the men's room did not. Again, I had two kids in diapers, and instead of both of us taking a child to get them changed, it usually fell on me, since DH didn't have the proper facilities.

The other thing that disappointed me was the catamaran. It was included in the cost of the trip, but they only had youth size life jackets, not infant ones (my youngest was not even a year old) and I wasn't going to chance going on a boat without having appropriate life jackets available. Not that I would have necessarily made them wear them (it was a huge probably 30 or 40 foot boat) while on board.

All in all, it was a nice vacation, but I felt it lacked in the service department. I know it is not fair to compare to Disney, but in comparison to the service that you get on a cruise ship (we have also cruised extensively on Celebrity) it really was disappointing. There is really something to be said about having the same servers every day, and for them getting to know you and your families preferences. I know that the tipping is a controversial subject on these boards, but I really feel that people tend to go all out if there is (or potential for) financial reward.

Thank you to everyone for your honest feedback on the resort. After reading the reviews, it sounds like a place we might add to our list to visit in the future if the price was right. Being our son is so young we can travel anytime of the year taking advantage of deals, if they are any.

I have been to AI so I am able to compare and contrast the AI experience to a cruise vacation. I was just really looking for some honest feedback on the Beaches resort. The two weeks I priced out March and October ranged from $4-8k for a family of 3 without airfare. I don't think I have ever spent $4k on a cruise even after adding in all the extra costs. Cost wise, Beaches might be a tough sell to the hubby.

Four Bears brought up a great question. In regards to the food allergies. What normally happens is prior to arrival, you or your agent can email the Executive Chef (Mr. Collin Watson), and just give him a break down of what food types the kids are allergic to and he will ensure that your request is taken care of. Beaches also has a Chef that is located in the main lobby in Caribbean Village that sits down with guests upon arrival and goes through their dietary needs while they are on property.

On my last visit down there, I sat down with Chef Watson and spoke to him about Gluten Free dining and a few other things. Chef Watson is very proactive in the area of food safety and special dietary concerns. He spoke about making sure cross contamination did not occur by maintaining utensils and cookware used specifically for the different dietary concerns and his staff who are trained to provide meals to affected guests. I also found that at any given time, Chef said he is servicing 17 to 25 different guests with food related concerns.

I think that as Canadians, we get stuck with higher flight costs (unless we want to get to a US airport, which would be nightmarish in our case), which is part of why the cruise is not such a bargain for us. Fortunately, we're flying on points this time. :cheer2:

To answer your question, Beaches was, by far, the best AI we've been to, with or without kids (we've been to 5). Still not sure it was worth the extra cost, but I don't know (yet) if DCL is worth it either, to be fair! :)

One other thing that bugged a lot of people but didn't bother us - there is no room service. However, we were about 2 minutes from 5 or so of the restaurants (and it was still quiet) so it was very easy to pop over and pick up what you want - they're quite used to it. We did not have to wait a long time for most of our meals (once, only).

Not able to get to Detroit or Buffalo easily? Lucky for us, DTW is 40 minutes away.
Thanks all for the tips/info - T&C is on the list of "next time" destinations and so is more DCL...

I went to beaches t and c in 2003 with my hubby and under 2 year old daughter. We got so lucky as there was a charter flight from philly. We only paid $2400 for the entire week including air. We had a fantastic time but I would never go with the prices they want now

We've looked at Beaches Turks and Caicos recently. According to some reviews in trip advisor the resort was closed in June 2012 due to a virus. To be honest when I read about this and the way it was handled by the resort I was totally turned off. I know illness is always a possibility with that many people in close quarters but I think thus resort is off our list as a result.

We did Beaches T&C in 2007. As a result we joined DVC the following year after going back and forth on it. I know it was a while back but we found the service to be so much below our experiences with Disney.
