Anyone actually stay at GF, and NEVER going back?

Mizner's was upstairs and not right in the main lobby. And it was, like the rest of the GF, sort of boring and stuffy in there, IMO. The GF thread has all positive reviews because the primary people who post there are GF lovers who frequent the hotel and many of them are GFconcierge stayers. And my poor service issues were during a traditionally slower period- last week of August, not at a peak time like holidays or mid-summer.

I didn't like it at the GF....stayed for 10 days a few years back. I felt horribly out of place walking through the lobby in shorts and a tshirt.

Just not my style.

Thought the rooms were a little small for the price.

Didn't like the pool either..WAY to crowded, even at night.

Just not my style I guess..

Cheers,
Josh

GF Fan here!!!:wave2:

Another counter post---My dream for the last 15 years was to stay there and in February we finally did! It was a birthday trip and it WAS THE BEST!!
The staff was friendly, helpful and smiling! We dont have kids so we didnt experience the "kid-friendly" point of view of it. Nonetheless, it wasnt stuffy, or snobby in the least. I didnt feel like i was in "grandma's room" either! The rooms were airy, roomy, and very sweet! I got birthday surprises everyday from the staff and it was wonderful! The balcony was wonderful, the grounds SUPER CLEAN and everyday mousekeeping did a great job with towel animals every day!

The transportation was awesome, and we always hopped the monorail to the TTC and went where we wanted to go to avoid long waits. We ate at Narcoosee's and had the best meal ever. The filet was melt in your mouth tender and the service was great.

I dont mind paying the Disney price to stay at the GF..its well worth it in my opinion! So I AM GOING BACK FOR CHRISTMAS!!! :yay:

In 2003, we won the Kellogg's Bobblehead Sweepstakes. When we were in the detail planning stages, I explained that although the trip was awarded for 4, there were 5 of us (we'd have 3 DDs along) and the CM was thrilled to get us the GF for our "prize nights". Having visited before, we were THRILLED, esp since the sweepstakes details included a "moderate resort". We had already planned a trip for that time frame and when getting our deposits back, a lot of them came back in checks, so we just converted those to traveller's checks to put on the room at check-in for our dining/incidentals. I was couth enough to get $100 denominations so I wouldn't be signing twenties for hours.

We arrived at the GF and had a terrible time getting bell service. I got to the check in desk and the CM was "high-falootin'" (as my grandma would say) and became slow as molasses in winter when he saw I was NOT using a credit card, but the traveller's checks. I kept looking at my watch (we had ADRs and I had a rental car to return) and he just moved slower and slower. SO aggravating. It took over an hour to check in (and we were 2nd in line). We wound up having to rebook the ADR and instead of having a few hours at Epcot beforehand, wound up having NO time at Epcot at all. I was ROYALLY peeved at spending $60 on a single day ticket for us to pay for an over-priced meal at Coral Reef with no time to enjoy the park.

Aside here (story I told him and his manager before I left the front desk): My family used to own an upscale European gift shop. We had a customer one day walk in with dirty boots and overalls, unkempt, with a bandana in the back pocket, the whole thing. We were ALL about customer service, so we welcomed and waited on him as we would anyone who walked through our door. He made his selections and we wrapped them up. He asked if he could step behind our cash wrap for a moment, which we let him and he hiked up his pants leg to pull a huge roll of hundred dollar bills from his boot. He became one of our best customers and later told my parents how much he appreciated that we treated him well. I hardly recognized him whenever he came in in a business suit! ;)

I don't care what I "look" like to the person behind the desk or if he/she thinks that I'm "worthy" to stay in their resort, but the people at the GF treated us like crap every time I went to the front desk or bell stand. I grew up in Europe and can snob with the best of them, but find the whole attitude annoying. Mousekeeping was dicey, rooms were no great shakes and it was a hike to the pool/quick service. Christmas decor was lovely, but certainly easy enough to spend a few hours visiting rather than having to deal with noses stuck in the air. The monorail was handy for Epcot/MK, but getting anywhere else was a bus NIGHTMARE.

I wouldn't stay there again.

I have also noticed that the bus service is usually horrible for the resorts around MK. Pop Century has really EXCELLENT bus service by comparrison.:thumbsup2

Just wanted to touch on a few things, first I too felt like the GF would be snooty and we would feel out of place, but it was definitely to the contrary. We had a gorgeous stay during the Christmas Season and it was so warm and inviting it brought me back to my childhood with our victorian christmas ornaments and the choir singing in the lobby reminded me of going to Church at midnight mass and it just brought back so many warm and lovely memories for me. It was very casual and I never felt out of place or that I had to pretend I was something or someone I was not, because I wouldn't allow myself to feel that way. I am not rich by any means (DH is a firefighter if that doesn't give you a hint, lol) but I felt very at home here. Another thing too, is that we didn't encounter one problem with the CM's they were warm and funny and very helpful, maybe it was the time of season, who knows, but we loved it.

My point is that if you're not choosing GF because you think you would feel out of place, then I believe you're making a mistake, if it's for other reasons, okay, but don't not choose because you think it may be too hoyty toytie (sp? lol). I also think that ALL Disney resorts are WAYYYYY over priced and if we could get everyone to boycott, I would, but just like gas, the housing market and lots of other things, there are people out there who just have money to burn and pay ridiculous amounts of money for things and it makes it harder on the rest of us to try and keep up. JMHO :)

We just returned from Poly. Since as long as I can remember, I have wanted to stay at the GF. We finally walked over there one night and walked around. We also had dinner at 1900 Park Faire and I have to say the resort was beautiful. But that being said... If I am going to spend the money, I would rather go back to the Poly. The atmosphere was more laid back than at the GF which is more our style. But I enjoyed my view of the GF from my Poly room.

I was thrilled to finally be able to see the GF up close and that was enough for me! I am over my "need" to want to stay there!

To the poster who asked about the season we stayed there, the first (and by far worst) visit was the second week of August. Hardly peak season.

The second, third, and fourth visits were all Marathon weekend, so second weekend in January. Again, not peak season.

Ducklite...what were the parks like that week? We're going the week before marathon weekend (and leaving on Saturday)...were they crowded? empty? wondering what to expect...sorry I'm off topic!

We've stayed at GF twice and although the convenience to MK is excellent, the GF isn't my cup of tea. I really don't care for the theming of the resort and IMHO it is kind of stuffy and I don't feel very comfortable there.

Give me Poly or WL any day and I'll be happy!:thumbsup2

Once the New Years crowds leave, the place is like a ghost town. The only caveat is that the weather can be unpredictable--highs in the upper 80's and low's in the uppers 30's--all in one week. It doesn't rain much that time of the year.

BUT also wouldn't! We like the Gingerbread House at Christmas, but feel that the Resort is way overated. I don't like the fact that the GUESTS have to walk a long distance to park in their parking lot across the busy street unless you PAY for VALET parking. They automatically make you feel like you don't deserve to stay there if not paying for the luxury of the resort. I feel like the Valet should be across the street and let those guys do the running back and forth and let the remainder of the guests at least have parking as close as the other resort guests. I personally am not aware of another resort where the closest free guest parking is so far away. IMHO they just treat you like an outsider right from the beginning. Anyhow hope you enjoy your stay if you decide you would like to try it.:thumbsup2

You know they can't make you feel anything, you do that yourself. :confused3

As to the parking, the majority of guests to the Grand Floridian do not use self parking at all. Most are flying and not using a rental car or driving. Those that do; have no problem with valet parking.

As to the parking being that far, WL and AKL and BW are certainly not close to the rooms.

I did not read all of the post, but I saw a lot of negative post. We stayed at GF in 2003 and LOVED the resort!!! I thought the service was wonderful! Everyone we encountered was friendly and spoke with a smile and respect. Our dd4 heard "hello there princess" by everyone that worked there. We went in Sept 2003 on the "7 nights for the price of 4" package...so it ended up being the same we paid at a value resort earlier that year :lmao:

The only negative that I can think of would be the self parking. It's very far away...but we didn't have this problem because we didn't have a car. We only became aware of it after we re-visited in 2006.

Oh, and snooty...no way! I felt comfortable walking in with shorts and a tshirt from the parks OR dressing up nice for dinner....it all "fit". You're at Disney! :goodvibes

I stayed at GF because a conference I was speaking at was being held there. I took advantage of the conference room rate to stay before and after the actual dates of the conference.

I found the resort to be nice, however I wont' be returned because the theming isn't for me. The service was very good, I had a room that was directly over the entrance to a service area and it was noisy and they quickly moved me to a quieter area of the resort without any problems. I had an issue with a key not working and when it took 20 minutes for someone to get to the room to let me in, the replaced the food I had purchased since it wasn't hot any longer. They even delivered it to the room.

I've got no complaints over the service. The room size was fine, it just wasn't decorated to a decor that I'm interested in. If there isn't the word "lodge" in the title, I'm just not interested.

I'll happily give up my room at GF for one at WL or ALK. I'm glad I was given the opportunity to stay here, however I won't be going back just because the theming didn't interest me.

We stayed at GF for our "one time" trip to WDW.......well our "only" trip turned out to be our first of many stays. Our 1997 GF trip was planned for my DD's HS graduation present. Started out thinking of a mod. after several changes decided to stay at GF since it would be our "only" trip there and figured we would splurge.....well, we fell in love with WDW.

We've stayed at several resorts since then. We really enjoyed our stay at GF, but Epcot resort area was where we spent most of our time, so the majority of our stays since then have been in that area.

We had a wonderful stay at GF in a dormer room overlooking the pool. They were filming a Disney commercial one day at the pool, and it was fun watching it from our balcony. But a monorail resort wasn't our top priority for future stays, especially since we didn't have young kids with us.

I would not hesitate to stay at GF again if we wanted to be close to MK. :)

d, here was my experience:

We didn't get housekeeping the first day we were there and when we called to have two minor items in our room fixed we never saw anyone from maintenance. After that first day DH decided it was time to switch to BWI. We did and we had a great remainder of our stay.

TTFN!

I always wonder how people just switch resorts in the middle of their stay? Do you just forego what you paid for your vacation or do you pay a difference or do you move over to the other resort for free? After reading this post I am getting really nervous we will hate our first trip to GF. We got a good rate so I keep telling myself that this is our one chance to try this resort, but we are still paying more than it would cost to stay at one of the Moderates, which we really like or WL which is really nice. I was just wondering how you just decide to switch a resort once there!

I believe the title of the thread is "Anyone ACTUALLY stay at GF..."

You said in the title of your post that you haven't!
