And what tax hike would that be?

Missed this one. First SOTU I've missed in years. I'm sick and I finally got some sleep.

the allen brothers, my dad and my uncle, were not uncomfortable as much as they were excited that the president of the united states was showcasing them. you have blogs, they have the state of the union address.

I watched most of it, DD had to watch it for her AP Gov class. I thought it was funny how many times the Space Program was mentioned and going to the moon was mentioned when the facts are the Shuttle fleet is being retired this year and the Constellation program (back-to-the-moon) funding was cut.

There are no plans for United States in the near future to go back into space or to go to the moon. And I have to say, my DD is and was devastated about the news.

agnes!

I watched. There didn't seem to be as much clapping or standing ovations this time as in other SOTU addresses which I found refreshing. Probably because they decided to mix the parties rather than having one on each side.

Unfortunatly, I fell asleep halfway through. I don't know if it was because of a boring speech or too little sleep. But I did wake up just before he finished and stayed up to watch the rebuttal. I thought the speech to be more interesting than the rebuttal, which seemed to be the same stale old message given by a guy who had really big ears.

Oops! I recently discovered simply mentioning a politician's name violates the rule about political threads, even if there is no political intention. Shame! :sad2:

Yeah, me too...on a different thread so I would guess this one is earning points like mad!

:confused3 That doesn't make any sense. If this thread violated the rules and the OP got points, why didn't the moderators close it down when they assigned points?

I watched the State of the Union on NBC. The lighting was very bad. Both Obama and Boehner had an orange Oopma-Loompaesque glow that was unflattering. Paul Ryan looked awful too.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was pictured more than once rummaging in her purse and many of the elected officials from both parties appeared bored. Poor Gary Locke has blood in one of his eyes. Hillary Clinton was having a bad hair day.

Yeah, I suppose the lighting is always somewhat problematic when dealing with a building that was built before the advent of mass electronic media, I don't suppose it is possible to retrofit the space *well* with appropriate lighting. Maybe the lighting people used too intense of a gel-color for the focused lights? (There was a general-purpose one we used to call "******* Amber" but maybe the lighting-designer didn't balance out the orange/red tones...) I would think it's probably mostly general-purpose/flourescent-type, but I've never been in the Chamber for a SotU (maybe they have a special set-up for this?) and haven't been in the Chamber for a while so am not sure.
I would think the makeup people would know how to compensate for the lighting but maybe it was a surprise to them too.

A thread got deleted because of a descriptive reference to dining plans on the restaurant board. Nothing political intended. I thought it was kind of shooting from the hip, but I guess it depends on the Moderator.

Is Biden the one with the striped tie behind the President? He just put a mint in his mouth.

Do you really not know what the VP looks like?

I also noticed a lot less standing and clapping compared prior SOTU addresses. It seem somed muted and toned down...rather boring actually.

I can't believe that one blonde girl was a Freshmen in High School! She looked like early 20s to me!

Who are they?

Not really. He has nothing in his looks that makes an impression on me to make me remember him. I'm bad at remembering people's faces anyway.

The tennis match in the Australian Open that was on during the SOTU was very interesting.
