Anybody have any experience with a weighted blanket?

If so, I have a few questions:
  1. Is your blanket "cooled?" If so, what does that mean in real life?
  2. What weight did you choose?
  3. Is your blanked more than 10% of your body weight, or less than 10% of your body weight?
  4. Have you changed the weight of the blanket?
  5. Have you had any problems, or stopped using a weighted blanket?
Obviously, the more info you can provide, the more helpful it will be. TIA!

I got a weighted blanket for Christmas. It is not cooled, and I definitely wouldn’t be using it in summer since it would be too hot. I have a 12 lb one, and that is more than 10% of my weight. It does not feel too heavy on me. I like it but I don’t know if it has helped as much. I sleep the same with or without it. I have some issues falling asleep—once I’m asleep I usually stay that way. If I wake up in the middle of the night, it takes forever to fall back asleep. I do like the feeling of being in a cocoon and was hoping it would help me stay asleep on my back. That being said, it was on the floor this morning so apparently I kicked it off and didn’t even realize it. I did see some product on Shark Tank that looks more like a swaddle type thing that uses the same pressure points but actually isn’t weighted and looks more friendly for summer use. Also can wash that without fear of damaging the washing machine.

I have 2 for myself and my son just got one for Christmas. I love mine! I have one on my bed. It is 25 pounds total weight in a queen size so it is spread out. I have a fuzzy cover for it that I use during the winter and a microfiber cover for it during the summer. I do notice a difference in the temperature of it depending on what cover I have on. I can't sleep without it anymore. I feel that it helps me get a more restful sleep and keeps me from bouncing all over the place.
I also got a 15 lb weighted throw blanket that I absolutely LOVE. I got it right after I got out of the hospital as I had seen a few others with the weighted throw in the Oncology Unit (diagnosed with a rare leukemia and ended up in the hospital after an allergic reaction to one of the medications). It has been such a calming and comforting blanket that has helped me so much with the challenges I have gone through this past year. My son started to steal it....which is why he got his own for Christmas..

That being said....they aren't for everyone.....but I definitely find that mine helps with my anxiety and has replaced the many fuzzy blankets that I used to get during the winters.

My DS ask for one for Christmas - he says it's been life-altering. He says when he's under it he can fall asleep very quickly without tossing and turning and his night's sleep is much less restless. His is a 12lb. Bell&Howell brand; a microsuede cover with bajillions of little glass beads sewn into small squares. I don't know if it's "cooled" or what that even means but we're in the deep throes of winter here so he doesn't find it too hot.

Never heard of them, but sounds like they make a lot of dubious claims for their product. When products are on Shark Tank, the panel is generally quick to point out you can run into trouble with the FDA when you make unproven product claims.

So, What Exactly is a Gravity Blanket and What Can it Do? | (sleepsherpa.com)
I think most of us know to be skeptical of non-scientific marketing claims. That's why I was seeking actual personal experience from DISers, rather than Google -- or Shark Tank! :rotfl2:

Mine's not a Gravity Blanket brand, but I do have a weighted blanket. It's a twin size and 15 lbs which is slightly more than 10% of my body weight. I got a heck of a deal on it so I didn't feel too bad about spending money even if I ended up not liking it.

My verdict. I like it for falling asleep. For a nap, it's great. If I sleep under it all night, I usually end up taking it off somewhere during the night. I am a tosser-and-turner. I toss and turn less with the weighted blanket, but I still do somewhat and it can be cumbersome to turn over underneath. I might have liked a 12 lb blanket more (which would be a little less than 10% of my body weight, but the 12 lb version wasn't on sale).

My husband and daughter love it though (and my college age son said "I better not get one of these. If I do, it'd be hard to leave it to go to class!") My husband was having some restless, anxious sleep and it turned a corner when he started sleeping under my weighted blanket. He now considers it his weighted blanket. My daughter liked mine so much, she asked for her own and sleeps under it all the time.

I just ordered one that is a cooling one. It is10% of my bodyweight. I am happy to hear that it works for some people. Looking forward to trying it. Following this thread.

My DD has one that she's not using while she's at college, so I'm going to try it and see how it feels.

I love my weighted blanket. I have had it two years now. I spent forever trying to decide between 12 or 15 pounds. I think I went with 15. My daughter has a 12. She can't sleep without it and takes it to sleepovers. It is with her at college now.
It stays put fairly well, but if it falls off, I wake up.

If you like the weighted "vest" they put on you at the dentist, then you will like a weighted blanket. I love them at the dentist!

I don't think mine is cooling, but it is not hot. It just supplies weight, not heat.

I have a 25lb weighted blanket. More than 10% of my body weight. I do not use it to sleep. I use it to help calm my brain when my anxiety gets bad. It works VERY well for this. The only time I sleep with it is when my husband works 3rd shift and I'm alone in the house. It does help me get to and stay asleep in those cases, but is too hot to sleep with regularly.

We love our weighted blankets Not cooled but not too hot even for DH. Kids bought mine a couple of years ago and hubby stole it. So I had to bumore. I use one to snuggle on the sofa, one on our bed and another for my DGD. We all sleep much better...no tossing of turning. The individual blankets are about 10% except for the one on our bed. It's a little bit more.

I will add that it took me a few nights to be accustomed to the blanket but the others were in love on the first night. They are similar to sleeping under multiple quilts as far as weight but not temperature.

Just got my 2ed one it is only 10 pounda i found that the correct weight was to heavy for me but love the 10 pound one

My sister got me one for my birthday that is either 12 or 15 lbs. I love using it on the couch. I've only tried it on the bed one night and I had wacky dreams all night about being weighted down to things and not able to get up. I probably need to try it again because I've been having a really hard time falling asleep lately.

DD14 has a 12 lb one and loves it. She has had it for one year and uses it nightly. I don't recall it being "cooled", but she loves to sleep warm with lots of layers. It really has helped her go to sleep and sleep better. I read they could help with ADHD kids, so that's why I looked into it for her. She has requested a heavier one, so we may have to look into a larger one for her. I tried it out for a few minutes and I don't care for it. I think it causes me stress vs. feeling stress relief. It kind of gives me claustrophobic vibes.

ETA - the 12 lb blanket was under 10% body weight, but a year later the 15 would be closer to 10%.

I had read this before (maybe in the other thread). I love the x-ray vest at the dentist too, so I went out and bought a weighted blanket. I didn't like the blanket and didn't find it relaxing at all, so I returned it.

I had a plastic pellet one that weighed 10 pounds. I found it very calming, but I could not sleep with it. It became too heavy and the sound of those pellets moving around annoyed me. I just bought a weighted blanket weighing 7 pounds and is made only with thick loops of super soft fabric. It is very calming and not heavy, but best of all no annoying pellets. I love it.

I know I'd love this - IF I lived in a cooler climate. Can't imagine using this in florida...we pay a fortune in AC/electric bills just to keep the house cooled to 76-77 degrees and I'm still too warm.
