Hi all!
I wonder if you can help? I sold a bracelet to a woman in the shop on Friday - today she has bought it back because she decided that she didn't need it anymore! I said that I would offer her a credit note but not a refund as there was nothing wrong with it, however she started to kick off in the shop so I said ok I will do it this time but in future it's credit note or nothing.

I can't find anything online regarding this kind of thing but is it ok to say that? Obviously if the item was faulty then I would give the money back but what's to say that she didn't buy it on Friday wear it on Saturday and then bring it back?

Any advice is much welcomed!
Thanks
Gems

im sure if there is nothing actually wrong with the item you are under no obligation to refund !

found this via google

Retailer's Goodwill - don't confuse this with your Rights.

Can I return something that's not faulty, for instance because I've changed my mind, or it doesn't look as good as I'd thought it would? Well, you probably can because most retailers make these kind of offers on a good will basis, because they believe it increases sales. However, in this instance you don't have any rights at all - not to an exchange, refund or credit note. Anything you are offered you should take and think yourself lucky.

I am sure you don't have to offer a refund unless it is a statutory reason ie Sale Of Goods Act and it broke etc. May be an idea to contact your local CAB to see if they can help.

I just want to make sure that they can't sue me for putting the wrong information up on the jewellery stand, but like I said to DH just on the phone what if she had (in worst case scenario) some contagious skin condition or something and she had worn it - do you see what I mean?

I think that under the 1982 supply of good act if the item in question was undamaged & worked ok to serve it's purpose then you did not have to give a full refund. A credit note would have been enough as a good will gesture.
It's worth giving trading standards a call about this one as they are not only there for help to customer but i'm sure they will offer help to shop owners.

Thanks guys, having read through that then am I ok to say:

We are unable to offer refunds on items of jewellery unless they are faulty, we are pleased to offer a credit note to you if you wish to return a none faulty item.
Your legal rights are not affected by this policy.

put a sign up in your shop saying it and then if it happens again you just have to point it out
some people are just chancers

I have done that now, I am a bit of a push over as I hate confrontation so it was easier just to back down but if it's on display then people can't have a go really can they (even though I am sure they will!)

Glad you got it sorted out know & it's worth asking any question on here as you never know who know what :cool1:
Good idea with the sign also :thumbsup2
