The denials won't show up on your credit report. I was denied for the furniture (because I recently moved) and for credit to install central air (because a PO Box showed up on my credit report as a current address). None of that shows up on my report. The only thing that shows up is the inquiry, which does have some negative effect - you know, if you've applied for 4-5 credit cards within a few months time, it looks like you're just applying for everything out there.
By the way, I have opened a new credit card during the last 12 months - a credit card in order to balance transfer to the 0% rate for a year. So, I don't know how they use that as a reason for a denial for one person and not another. It all sounds so arbitrary to me. It sounds like they want people with a massive credit history who carry more than one card. I think that's a silly way to narrow it down.
