We just moved back to our hometown and the church we have been attending has a MOPS (Mothers of Preschool Children) group. We had a moms group at our old church, but it was for all mothers. My youngest is n Kindergarten and it is full day, so I would not be bringing her for the childcare. Is this group only if your children are smaller? On the sign it said something about toddlers through kindergarten. I really miss my friends from my mothers group and was hoping to meet some other moms through this group. However, I do not want to look stupid showing up w/o a child. There is another group at night when they do not offer childcare. Does anyone belong to Mops and have older children?

I'm not sure, but why don't you call and find out.

I went to a MOPS class, session, whatever they call it, once, with a co-worker who talked me into going. She told me it was at her church but was not religious (we are different religions). That could not have been further from the truth. First I was forced to buy a $15 book which I thought was ridiculous....it talked about how women are suppose to be subserviant (sp) to thier husbands. We also had a guest speaker and everyone in the room was crying half the time (she was suppose to "tell us how to pray". As if there is a right way and a wrong way. Then, when the mom's finally started talking about mom things (after a long time...) it was the most ridiculous thing I think I have experienced. It was way too serious and unrealistic. Then we all piled into another room to eat snacks and listen to someone else speak. It was a long afternoon. I did have a pre schooler with me, who was taken to another room. She had fun, I think. I never went back again. Not my cup of tea.

You may like it, though. I suppose every group and meeting is different. And, if it's the same religion as you, that's even better. Good luck.

PS: There should be some other mothers groups in your area. Try the newspaper, or pick up some info at Babies R Us or Toys R Us.

Wow Im really sorry you had such a bad experience with MOPS~
That is NOT how its supposed to be at all!

I started 2 different MOPS groups here in Boise and they were nothing like that.

to the OP our MOPS were for moms with kids before grade one. That doesnt mean that yous is the same. I know many have expanded and grown as the needs have changed or other groups have formed that started in MOPS I think its a great programme. I hope you can find someway to connect with moms in your new area :)

I guess I'm from a small town. I went to meetup.com and the only group was for pug (dog) owners! :rotfl2:
I looked online and MOPS is for moms with kids thru Kindergarten.
Anyone else gone to MOPS?

MOPS stands for mothers of preschoolers - you are expected to have a child in the classes. It wouldn't hurt to check in case they don't follow that rule or have set up groups for those that age out. They will let you babysit or teach a moppets class though.

We used to have a great moms group at our church too. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I am not a fan of MOPS. I know people that love it though.

I've been involved with MOPS for the past twelve years. Now my littlest has outgrown it, so I do childcare for it. It's a great group. I even got to go to the convention in Kansas City before Grace was born and met Elisa Morgan!!

I used to be a Coordinator of a MOPS group. I think every group is a little different in how they do things. You "graduate" once your child goes to first grade so you will probably only be able to be a member for one year. Also - you do NOT have to bring your child. I never did. Our meetings were always while my children were in school. So no you won't look dumb. It's actually more relaxing w/o your kids because they you don't have to worry they will come get you during the meeting if your child wants you.

I thought MOPS was a wonderful opportunity for some"me" time w/o the kids. We had breakfast, made a craft, talked to other moms about things we wanted to and had a speaker come in and talke to us about different topics. I also made some of the best friends of my life.

I was in MOPS for 7 years. I was like you and wasn't sure if it was for me but I went anyway and it changed my life. I just loved it. I say give it a try. What have you got to lose? Good luck!

I also had a bad experience with MOPS.

I didn'tthink the childcare was that great. I went to pick up my newborn DS after the meeting and the attendant said, Oh now where did I put him? Huh? :confused3 I was a new 1st time mom and not amused.

Then the meetings were at a church which is a different denomination of religion than I am. What they preached was shoved down my throats and alot even preached on how they are so glad they are not Catholic anymore.

No thanks.
