We are looking to use Stampcrete to do a concrete patio around our pool. I was wondering if anybody here has done that, what your experience has been if you have any pictures PLEASE let me see them etc.

We're investing a huge amount of money into this and I am having a terrible time making up my mind with colors and whatnot. There's not a lot of examples on their webpage so I am getting confused. They have colors, they have examples of some of the stamps but you cant see what color combo made up that patio etc.

I have had colored/stamped concrete in the past. Is Stampcrete a brand or installer? I don't think I would do this as a DIY job if that is the route your looking at.

We had to put a sealer on it every 2 years to bring the color back, as it faded over time. On a driveway it had to be done every year.

I just glanced at their website. It seems to be targeted to contractors/dealers. I don't think its meant for individual homeowners to do it. The training video is on sale for $849.

We have had it for a patio area and my husband did it for years as he was a concrete contractor .........I would not recommend it for around a pool as it is incredibly slippery when wet unless you could put them some sand type grip stuff on it and even then I don't know if I would go with it around a pool.

It does look great and your imagination is really quite the limit for color and design. You will need to seal it every year and if it was to chip or if it peels from not being done correctly it is difficult to correct.

We own a concrete business, DH does this type of work. DO NOT attempt to do it your self, I cannot tell you how much money we make off people who think they can do a project on their own and then call us to tear out and replace their failed attempt.

The colors, if done correctly will come out pretty close, but you want sample swatches, like you would use for paint, viewing on a computer screen will not give you an accurate depiction. A professional will either gave good samples or swatches that were done on the concrete natural base color.

Also stamping is not easy, it is very laborious and difficult if you want it to turn out right.

Hire a professional, do not attempt to do it your self. Stamped and stained or colored (I recommend stained if you add color to the wet concrete it is sometimes difficult to get the color evenly distributed and added at the right concentrate yo get the desired color), are beautiful, but I gave seen some nightmarish DIY jobs.

No we are not doing it ourselves. We have a quote from a contractor that deals with their products. Their website IMO stinks. I'd like to be able to see different colors with each stamp etc. So frustrating.

I definitely do not want slippery :( I know a few of them looked "glossy" and was wondering about that. My husband really loves the look. I was ok with regular old concrete but he absolutely despises the way that looks and he won't even let me price pavers as we're way over budget to begin with.

Oh and if you do the color added to the concrete, you can have a rougher finish than staining, which would be a flick finish, but again, it will fade if not sealed often as other stated. Stained concrete is sealed at the time it is done, and TYPICALLY does not have to be resealed. We have a stained/rock pattern stamped patio at my in laws that has been in place for over 10 years and has not had to be resealed, but it is not around a pool.

Honestly,I would try and convince him NOT to go with colored concrete, leave it natural, and just use a stamp for texture.

Does your contractor not have samples? We have a whole small section of our shop yard that is dedicated to samples, we have laid out small sections where we have stamped out our different patterns we do, with the most popular colors both as mix ins and stains, as well as plain with out color and some no color with just a gloss sealer.

Yes he left us a sample sheet but then told us to look at the website for stamps etc. We have not been to their storefront. I guess maybe we should go? My husband fell in love with the green until I told him it would look like a tennis court with a pool in the middle @@ :lmao:

Are you located in NJ by any chance?? :rotfl2:

No we are in Arkansas, but we do travel, but our travel fees are pretty steep :)

The most popular ones we do are the brick and the one that looks like the large irregular shaped stones, sorry cannot get the link to open to look at the color pictures. For us most people choose colors in the red field or browns, there is a copperish color that is real popular too.

We have a stamped concrete patio and driveway both. It can be slick. I think it's great for a patio and ours still looks beautiful like the day we did it. The driveway on the other hand I regret. It was GEORGEOUS but our harsh Midwest winters and salted roads are taking its toll on it. After only a few years it is starting to show some pitting and that's a lot more obvious on the stamped concrete. We've sealed it every year with the expensive sealer and do all the maintenance but I doubt it will last 10 years.

We have it for our patio and around the pool. I LOVE the look of it but I will say its very slippery when wet. Mine has faded and could used to be re colored (not terribly) however I don't feel like yelling " don't run around the pool" all summer long

Timely thread! We are having stamped concrete applied on Monday on top of our concrete decking around our pool. We love the look of the stamped concrete, but now this thread is making me nervous.:scared: Our top priorities were something NOT slippery when wet and something that wasn't too hot to walk on. The company we chose to do the work says the stamped concrete will be cooler to walk on than plain concrete and is not slippery.

They install a lot of stamped concrete around pools, and the first picture on their brochure shows stamped concrete around a pool. I just don't understand why they (any company) says it isn't slippery if it truly is?!?!??!? Wouldn't people not install it around pool areas?!?!? I'm starting to second guess our choice now!:( It is an expensive decking option and we've already paid half of the cost, with the rest due after installation.

As far as the choices/colors, a company employee came out to our house and we spent time comparing tiles beside the pool. It will be a two day job, Monday and Tuesday. We also need to be here because they'll mix the color and we can see it before it's applied to the deck. He said they can mix it to go lighter or darker, depending on how we want it to look. The idea is to match it (or contrast it) to our patio pavers and decorative rock.

I'll let you know how everything goes! Fingers crossed!

Funny about the regular concrete decking. We had regular concrete around our in-ground pool in Maine and I loved it. However, the concrete decking around our pool here in Arizona is not very attractive. It's verk stark and plain looking. I think the difference is that in Maine, we had the concrete decking, then a couple of feet of crushed rock, then everything outside the fence was beautiful, green grass. Here in our backyard, we have mostly pavers and rock, so the concrete decking really looks plain. We need something with color!

This is exactly what I'm afraid of now! I can hear myself for the next six months..."NO running around the pool!" We have very young grandkids that visit a lot and of course, kids are going to run. Although, they know they aren't supposed to run in the pool area!:scared:

@luvflorida. I'm sorry we put the sand in it that was supposed to make it less slippery but that first year was very slippery. After that it was much better, which is why I don't want to re color. Mine will be 5 years old this summer and I still love the look. I wouldn't have been happy with regular concrete.

We had a stamped concrete overlay applied to our plain concrete pool deck last week. Here are a few pics of the deck.

It took two full days to complete the job. We went with a local company that has been in the business for a long time. They're a respected company with excellent customer feedback. We were very pleased with their workmanship.

Prior to them coming out, we had to lower the pool water below the tile. They completely covered the interior of the pool with plastic and bubble wrap, then applied the first coat of the overlay.

We went with a natural stone granite look.

We're very pleased with the end result! The concrete is MUCH cooler to walk on with bare feet than the plain cement decking. The overlay has a non-skid material added to it, and combined with the various leveling and textures of the surface, it really isn't slippery. I can see though, that if the texture wasn't there, it would be slippery. Hard to explain, but the way your feet touch the various parts of the concrete, it keeps you from slipping. I'm sure, though, I'll still be reminding everyone "no running!" all summer!:)
