so we got daughter a hamster for her birthday and now we have decided to surprise son for his birthday with a trip for all of us to disneyworld...now..what do we do with the hamster ?? maxi the dog will go visit our friend the vet...but what to do with the hamster..and we also have a fire belly toad...i didnt know if you could feed them before we left ..and as for the hamster leave him lots of water in his bottle and lots of food..or would he eat it all up in one day ?? i have never had a hamster so i dont know these things...help anyone...

We left ours with plenty of food and water before we left, (we also cleaned his/her cage), and he/she was fine.

When we had our rats, we would leave them with 2 water bottles and plenty of food. They also sell treat sticks that you can leave for them. Our rats survived us being gone for a week twice with this method.

We had one.

If you do leave it, I recommend leaving it only in a glass tank and take out the wheel.

Our hamster got stuck in the tube and stuck in the wheel.

ok so if we fill up the water bottle all the way and give it lots of food it wont eat all the food in one day and die ?? also how in the world does it get stuck in the wheel..ours has an open side..large open side....and did it get stuck in the tube while you were gone ?? was it stuck when you got back ???

Ours got stuck in the tube. We had gone on vacation for a couple of days. We did have people look in on it. However when we got back it was in the tube not moving. We had to break the tube to get her out. I think she freaked and froze (scared) in there.

As far as the wheel his leg got caught and he was hanging there trapped. It was frightening. We were not a vacation but we had him in the car as we were traveling with him. She did NOT care for the car ride. I think it traumatized her.

She died last year and she was a cutie, very friendly. Her name was Sugar.

cass that is such a cute picture...my daughter named her hamster moo moo.....ok so do you all think i am worrying too much about the hamster being ok while were gone...shoot i am worried about the toad too....geesh......

Same with ours - but rats are more intelligent then Hamsters. Will the hamster eat up all the food right away? :confused3

Nope, hamsters always make little larders stocked with food for emergencies... they are not greedy, they only eat what they need and save the rest.

We have babysat hamsters for friends and they watched our gerbils. I don't like leaving them all alone for a week. We just took the cage over to their house.
