We have quite broad yorkshire accents which have been called Australian on a couple of occasions. They do struggle to understand regional accents

The very first time I went to Florida was 1990 with my Mum and her sister, we got chatting to a family in MGM and they asked if we were from California!!

Then when in Newport Beach in 2003 DH got asked if he was related to some family in Huntingdon Beach :teeth: Unfortunately we said no, but if they were long lost relatives then we would love to know!!

And your problem was . . . ? :confused3 Explain please. I'm sure there are more than me who'd like to know.

I would have thought that was obvious and would need no explination.

Your opinions on all things Irish, either North or South, are well enough known to us Obi. I personally find it offensive that you tar us all with the same brush. If I was to attend a DIS meet that you were present at also, would I get the cold shoulder from you? You once said your opinions were based on your personal experiences here in NI when you lost a colleague. I served in the security forces here too, for 13 long, bloody years and I lost a lot of friends and colleagues as well, but I don't use it as an excuse to deride every resident of this island. Indeed I have many friends on both sides of the community and I also class my DIS colleagues from the Republic as my friends even though I've never met any of them. Remarks like yours and Andru's smack somewhat of bigotry/racism even if not intentional and it's about time some people on these boards gave some thought to what they say BEFORE they actually say it! Rant over. Apologies to everyone else for going slightly off-topic but I can't just ignore this sort of attitude any more.

Just got back from America and Canada once we were mistaken for Australians and once we were asked if we were Swedish.

Can we please try and keep this thread in the light hearted manner that it was intended :)

Thanks :)

Nothing worse than being asked what part of England I'm from!! :rotfl2: A woman once asked us what sort of vegetables we grew in our garden & was totally dumbfounded when we told her that we normally just bought them!!

Yeah, the one that always makes me laugh when you say you're from England is when they say they have a friend from England - John Smith who lives in Liverpool. Do you know him? I suppose England (the UK) must seem pretty small to them but even so, I always feel like saying I have a friend who lives in Washington, do you know her? :rotfl:

The best one i got was a guy in Epcot telling me about his friend John from London."Do you know him?His name is John and he works as an editor in London." When i said no as i live in Manchester,he said,"yeah but you must know John, right?" :rotfl:

The other one was a guy on EE,all the ride round he was telling me about his trip to Glasgow near London!!!

Maybe it's cos America is so big that there concept of distance is so different to ours.

in '97 my SIL married Joe Smith who was lives 30 minutes away from Heathrow Airport. Anyway, a couple of years back there was this family at WDW who have the same accent or have sounded as my BIL so while waiting for the bus I was chatting with the kids about how are they enjoying their trip. So then I exchanges hellos to the whole family and finally asking where they are from. They did mention the location - forgive me if I cannot remember where - and then in return I mentioned that I have a BIL who leaves 30 minutes away from the airport. The Father had utter a not so happy answer "And no we don't know your BIL not all from UK know everybody". So after reading all your post, I guess he had experinced what you have posted here and finally got tired of explaining himself. But I was not even about to ask if he knows my BIL I was just simply about to add that we plan to visit my SIL and BIL soon! :confused3 And from then on I just smiled to anybody we meet and remind myself not to ask anymore. It was a bit humiliating at the bus stop. :rolleyes1

That's gonna happen anywhere though. We get a lot of American tourists where I live and over the years have struck up conversation with many of them. I still can't really distinguish one State's accent from another, despite the fact that they could live 1000 or more miles apart.

This is so true. I am from New England, and if I had a pound for every time somone from the UK asked me if I was Canadian, I could stay a few more days at WDW. :teeth:

My other favorite is when they ask why I still have my accent. I have been here 7 years, but spent 30 years in the US before that. I think my "accent" is here to stay. :rotfl:

And, from our American friends who have visited Scotland in the past, many have asked "do you know (insert name here) from (insert Scottish town/city name here)? :lmao:
I love this one too :rotfl2: Happens every time we meet someone from across the Atlantic :)

I've been asked if I am a Yankees fan because of my cap and also if I'm from Nebraska because of a t-shirt I was wearing. When I said I was from Manchester, England I was then asked if it rains every single day.

Time this was locked I think!
