I got a pretty good deal from Kansas City to Orlando with Delta (non stop) but it is on a Canadair Regional Jet (about 30-40 passengers). Has anybody flown on these kinds of jets before? Now I'm kind of worried about what I have booked. Since it is Delta can we still use the Magical Express Check in at the hotel for the return flight? :rolleyes2

Yes and I hate them...but I am afraid of flying in general... the rest of my family has no problem with them though!! Don't worry - you'll be fine.

I was on the CRJ flying Delta last week. It was a 2+ hour flight from Atlanta to Corpus Christi. The flight was smooth and everything went fine. The only difference is that I felt a little cramped compared to the bigger planes, but no big deal.

I enjoyed my flight and would not hesitate to fly on one again. I don't think you made a mistake at all. I have flown on everything from a 2 seat, open-air byplane to a transcontinental 747, and the CRJ was just fine. I actually had concerns at first about the longer flight on a small plane, but things went great.

Enjoy your trip.

I fly on them pretty frequently. The only difference I notice is the lack of overhead space. All but the smallest carry-on's have to be gate checked. Other than that, they are like any other jet. They take off, they go where they are going. They land.

Some people feel they are bumpier than larger planes.

OK, forgive me, I need to chuckle a little. Are you asking if the SIZE of your airplane will affect whether or not you can use DME? Makes no difference.

I PREFER to fly on the regional jets. I wish I could fly on them every time I fly. Best thing about it to me? Fewer people on board means VERY QUICK boarding and VERY QUICK deplaning. Less delay, less waiting in line just feels more relaxing. Also, if you want to think about safety in a generic sense, these regional jets are newer than most of the large jets in service.

I have flown them A LOT no problems. Will second the carry on information. Do not expect to take your normal on wheels carry on it will need to be gate checked. Last time I flew on one anything with wheels had to be checked and only things like small backpacks or diaper bags, purses, briefcases were allowed on. I wish the larger planes were this strict it made much faster loading and unloading and there was actually room for your coat overhead!

I find the seats on the CRJs even less comfortable than those on larger planes, but otherwise they are perfectly fine.

Just guessing here as to the OP's question, but you can book a flight with Delta and not only end up on a regional jet (the airplane) but on a different airline (something like ASA).

In those situations - you have a Delta ticket for a flight on ASA, do you have a "participating airline" for resort check-in?

That is correct...that was my question about the Magical Express check in. Since it may be an airline flying FOR Delta, can I still check my bags through at the hotel?

Thank you all for such great info. It was just what I was looking for. Especially the info about the carry on's. I will make sure to keep the carry-on's small. Is the same amout of checked luggage allowed as on the larger jets? Thanks so much.

Yes, you are permitted the same amount of checked luggage regardless of which aircraft is used.

OK, one thing I just recalled about flying in CRJs. On occasion when I've been on fairly empty flights, the flight attendant might ask a few people to switch seats, either to the other side of the plane or more towards the front and back, in order to more evenly distribute the weight on the aircraft. This is a standard procedure, so don't be alarmed if you see this occur in a fairly empty aircraft.

Even though your plane may say Comair or Delta Connection, it is still coded as a Delta flight (i.e. DL ####). So, yes, you still will be able to do Resort Airline Check-in for your return.

About the carry-on, if you want to take your usual carry-on just be prepared that for that segment it will be under the plane but you will get it back at the side of the plane for your next segment. so if your next segment is a larger plane you will be able to carry it on that flight. Just don't pack anything breakable in that bag.

I have flown in this type before and I actually liked it a little better. Because it is smaller, you get in and off much quicker and the flight attendents seem friendlier as well.

I like these planes. True, the seating room seems to be a bit tighter and there you do have to check many carryons at the gate. I kinda like checking carryons at the gate though, then I don't have to find space for them on the plane which can be a pain sometimes.

Generally comfortable riding aircraft.

I have flown on them when Independance was flying. They are a fine plane. I second the small carryon space and the smaller seats, but I still fit comfortably (and I'm more on the pooh size). The olny other drawback (I guess) is that there is only one lav and it's in the back of the plane.

Other than that, quick loading. Get on and go!

I am thinking these are close to or the same as the Embraer(sp?) jet we took to and from Boston. I am a chicken about flying and was slightly unnerved when I saw the size of the plane, but honestly, it was a breeze. I actually liked it.

Two tips I learned the hard way:
When they come down the little aisle with the cart....pull in your elbow.
and
When you stand up to get off, watch your head. I nailed mine on the overhead compartment!! :rotfl:

Have a great flight and vacation!!!

CRJ are so much better than the Embraer. I love to fly on the CRJ, I think they land very smoothly. I agree with what everyone says about the overhead space but I do not use carry-ons. If your carry-on goes under they do try to get it out quickly, just like when they put strollers under the plane.

One more question. My dh HAS to carry his CPAP (medical device for sleep apnea) and it is about the size of a back pack...maybe just a tad bigger. Will it fit as a carry on ok? It is breakable so we don't let ANYBODY check it in. VERY EXPENSIVE machine. Does anybody see a problem?

What great info you have provided already!

The 30 passenger jets are usually set up one seat on left side and two seats on right. I like getting on of the singles as I don't have to jockey with DD or DW for elbow space on the armrests. These are probably my favorite type of plane to fly on. I'm flown on both CRJs and Embracers.

We love the regional jets, especially the ones that have a row of just one seat. You get both a window and and aisle!!!

My hubby travels with a CPAP and we carry it on all the time. It fits under the seat just fine. My rolling laptop case also fits in the overhead no problem.

Most of the Delta regional jet flights are under ASA, Freedom, or Chataqua and yes, they do qualify for Resort Airline Check-in. We just did this last Sunday, no problems.

The regional jets have also never had a problem transporting my hubby's ECV.
