Just back from some plant shopping and I finally got my Korean spice viburnum!! I'm a little nervous about growing them. I bought some purple leaf plum hedges a few years ago and they ALL died.
I was upset- I'm trying to get my losses at a minimum, but sometimes it's just hit and miss....

Oh well, wish me luck..

Best buy of the day mums 3 for $1.00!!!

PLanT SHOPPING!!!!! Oh, I love plant shopping, but i think i am done until spring. Great deal on the mums.

I have never planted a Viburnum, I wonder why? They are quite beautiful when in bloon with a lovely fragrance.

There are several varieties, some deciduous, some evergreen. They like a soil rich in humus, sun or semi-shade.

I think there are only two flower colors, white or pink. A few of the deciduous and most of the evergreens produce berries, that are loved by the birds. Some berries are red, some white, also blue and black berries.

They say do not prune, the shrub has a lovely layering effect, especially when in bloom.

I have this on my list of shrubs for the bird garden, but have never planted one, I think I need to put a Viburnum in soon.

Enjoy your Viburnum. If you enrich the soil and make sure it has enough water for the first year, you shouldn't have a problems.

ME, ME, ME!!!!!

I have a Carleissi Viburnum, a leather leaf viburnum and a Shasta Viburnum.

I ADORE THEM!!!!

Mine are all deciduous. All three flower but only the carleissi has frangrance. And WHAT a frangrance. Rivals any lilac. Just irresistable!

I never did anything special for them. Plopped them in the ground, made sure they had adequate water and....VOILA!!!!

Good luck!

Gina (the bury-my-face-in-the-middle-of-a-lilac-bush-and-I'm-in-heaven garden bud) found a fragrance you adores more than lilacs??!!?!! This must be something!!

The word "Viburnum" rings a bell but I certainly don't have any. I must have seen it in print (or the internet) somewhere in my travels.....

Thanks for the info- now I'm plotting where to put them... in the very back of the yard so I can escape and enjoy the fragrance or near the house so I can smell them with the windows open.

Decisions, decisions......

Your Carleissi viburnum sounds very interesting Gina. Just plop them in the ground, add water, and .....enjoy the heady fragrance!! :) I'm going to have to investigate these, might need one in the spring. :)

Jjacqjob, there's only one thing you can do, buy two!!!! :)

Snowark

One step ahead of you - already did!!

I would have grabbed all of them if there had been more.. My goal is to get about five of them. I'd like to use them as a natural border on the back end of my house. It would look good and smell heavenly!!

Jjacqjob, it's no secret, most people are several steps ahead of me! ;) :)

Excellent plan!! :)

Jjacqjob, is it alright if I call you Jacquie? I have a tough time spelling your DIS name, I always have to check it! :)

Snowwark,

You certainly may. It wouldn't be so confusing if I hadn't made a typo when I originally registered at the DIS boards :o

To make it even simpler, please use "Jacq"- everybody else does.

Hi Jacq, I have had great success with my vibrunums. Easy easy to care for. My first is extremely hardy and huge. It's growing up the side of my chimney and faces west with full sun. Newest ones are doing well also with little care in full sun. Like Gina said just plop them in and water. They have a fabulous fragrance.

Good Luck
