Anybody else have a kitchen island with seating?

I have a question.

We are almost done with our remodel. It has been a long hard summer. :cool1:

We are putting in a kitchen island. 5 feet across, 24 deep. One side will be storage, one seating. The counter top is Siltstone (kind of a man made granite.)

When we designed it the person helping us said we could have a 12 inch over hang. I am getting nervous about that. We don't have any supports planned, but I guess we could add some.

The guy comes to measure it tomorrow and I am concerned he is going to tell us we can't do it. We have a 6 inch over hang on the side. We want to be able to sit the whole family around it (4 people and sometimes extras.) It is all one level and will be about 6 feet wide and 3 feet across.

Anyone else with an island with seating? How big is your over hang? I have been searching the internet for pictures and how to do supports if we need it. Our counter top was originally Corein, we changed it to siltstone after making the plans. I wonder if that makes a difference?

It looks great!

I just asked DH the Technical Spec is 15 for the over hang on Quartz. He does not like more than 12. You can get the little 6 inch brackets if you want.

Just a hint if you have not bought your stool yet. I got 6 with backs for 3 sides & the side I work on I got matching ones without the backs.

We still have a bit of work to do, molding and things like that. The sinks isn't hooked up yet, (glue has to dry still.)

Even though, it is done so here are pictures. I am very excited! :thumbsup2

I think we are going to get some sort of supports for the island over hang.

I LOVE it!!! Can I just say that I am so jealous that you have Silestone... my dream in life (well, at least for my house) is to have Silestone or Zodiaq. I'll eat rice for a year for Silestone or Zodiaq. :rolleyes1 Well, maybe not...

I really like the contrast from the light wood and that deep blue. Very nice! :thumbsup2

Thanks! I am happy with how it turned out. The dark blue was a bold choice for me, but I am pleased with it. It brings out the blue in the counter top. You should come over and see it sometime! Some things need changing still (like the garbage can. )

Thanks for posting the picture Fresh Tressa. That gives me a good idea of what your corbels look like. Lovely kitchen BTW.

MAKmom, ours is 12 inches, but it does seem big and unsupported, so DH is going to get something for it. We found some folding bar stools at IKEA at we like so we are going to use those until we find ones we really want to commit to. We also have old stools form and old breakfast bar (the are white and maple.) I forgot to put them in the picture. The island looks so big with out them. We ate dinner there tonight and it is plenty big. We can fit 7 around there if we need too. Good thing because my brother has 3 kids that eat here a few days a week. :thumbsup2

I showed DH the picture & he said the Quartz is so strong it is not going anywhere even if someone sits on it. You can get the 6 inch L shape bracket it you want at Home Depot.

Save your old stools for when you have a party. Everyone will want to sit around the island. I bring my old ones up & we squeeze in.

Yeah, I was going to say "Is that a Senseo in your kitchen? I'm coming over your house for coffee!" :thumbsup2 Nothing wrong with your garbage can. They really can't be all that special unless you invest in one of those stainless steel ones. :confused3

Our island is 11 feet by 4 feet. Our overhang is 2 feet with a cabinet at each end. There is a wooden triangle underneath to support the top. We never hit our knees on it.

You read my mind! I don't need stainless steal for appliance, just my garbage can. I saw linens and more has one for $30 this week. :thumbsup2

I am a bit scared for the Senseo, but I need to get more pods for it (decaf maybe.)

mickeyfan2, that is one big Island. I swear I have rooms in my house that are smaller then that.

Mine is 78'' x 44''. You win that is one big island :goodvibes

Not sure if I am any help...
Our island is 9 feet long and I think 60" in depth. Our overhang is 14inches but we have 2 gables underneath for support It seats 4 comfortably at the eating overhang area...which was the plan. Hope yours works for you!:thumbsup2

:woohoo: I'm going to check out that stainless garbage can! I have all stainless small appliances (white BIG appliances provided by the apartment), but I hate my white garbage can! $30 sounds pretty cheap to me!!!
