Charles Gibson is retiring at the end of the year and Diane Sawyer will replace him in January as anchor of ABC's "World News," the network said Wednesday.

Gibson, 66, said he had been planning to retire at the end of 2007 but events compelled him to stay. He was named anchor following the death of Peter Jennings and the wartime injury of Bob Woodruff in 2006. He's been at ABC News for 35 years and says he plans to continue as an occasional contributor.

I will miss him. Please don't make this post political. Either you will miss him or you won't.

I will miss him and I will miss Diane on GMA.

I will miss him too.

I always like how he says at the end of the newscast "I hope you had a good day"

I will miss him also. I think Diane will do a great job. So what are they going to do on GMA. I also love Robin, Chris & Sam

Me too!

“I'm Charlie Gibson, and I hope you had a good day. For all of us at ABC News, have a good night.”

Gosh, I remember when he started on GMA (has it really been that long?) with Joan Lunden.

I have to admit I didn't like him in the beginning but Joan was patient with him and I grew to like him!

I hope he has a very happy retirement!

I'll miss him but he will always be Charlie to me. ;) I must admit that I rarely watch his evening news show.

I've watched GMA since it began with David Hartman in 1975 - the year my first DD was born. It has been interesting to watch how each new host has made it "their" show.

I won't miss him. I used to think he had integrity, but not so much now. I do hope he enjoys his retirement though.

Have not watched ABC/CBS/NBC news for years and don't even know who their news readers are.

This. Not to get into politics, but he did an interview in the last election that snuffed out my faith in the press.

No more Charlie Gibson? :sad1: That is sad. However, I do love Diane Sawyer and watch more World News than GMA, so for me, this is a silver lining! :thumbsup2 (Still, IMO, nobody beats John Stossel...)

:sad1:

Wow, I am going to miss him! And I will miss Diane on GMA!

I gather that Robin and Chris will be the main hosts and they will bring in another permanent news reader co-host.

I won't miss him. I'm not a fan of biased reporters. But I do wish him the best. I think his decision to leave now was smart of him. The big 3 networks that run nightly news programs each night have been losing ratings at an alarming rate over the past year. Smart move by a smart guy.

ok, so you all know that you now have to tell the rest of us what he did, right??

And I will miss him and Diane.

Won't miss him. I find him arrogant. But it will be nice to watch GMA again after Diane Sawyer leaves.

I still miss him on GMA...
I like Charlie Gibson...:thumbsup2

I was really sorry to hear that Charlie Gibson is leaving the nightly news. I enjoyed him on GMA too...

I'll be sorry to see Diane leave GMA - I would have liked to see George Stephanopolous get the nightly news spot. :(
