I'm trying to diagnose my DD17 where the Drs are still baffled after many tests.

She has had 'abdominal pain, uncertain cause' since 1/30. Have had CT, Xray, numerous blood & urine & ultrasound. All normal.

But, this clicked in my lack of sleep stupor. She is enrolled in a concurrent enrollment YOGA class. 2 hrs 2x week. The night before this got bad, she had her 4th Yoga class & said she kind of had the pain that night. Next day, had to pee really bad, but couldn't at school due to Calc test & they lock all bathrooms due to vandalism. You have to have time to go to the main building (this HS has 7 buildings), check out a key, go to whichever academy you have a key for, then return key & get to class - in 10 min. So, she held until she could hold no more, crying & turned in her test not quite finished & not allowed to finish. After that the pain became unbearable & still is. She has been on morphine & other painkillers.

So, holding pee is muscle intensive. And, she had double inguinal hernias repaired at 8 months. Do you think Yoga could really cause muscles to pull/tear enough to possibly undo some of the hernia repair or the weak muscle wall? The main area of pain is under and next to the edge of one of her hernia incisions. Hernia is a hereditary thing in DH family. ALL women as far as we can trace have had 2 & MIL had to have hers repaired 3x before they put in the mesh supports. ER said the tests she has had done would only show a hernia if the intestine was thru the muscle. I'm thinking an MRI would show muscle damage but don't know & her primary, although a friend, is going NUTS with me calling all the time, so wanted to have some info before I call in.

thanks!!!

YES...Yoga could potentially cause that to happen IMO. Can you provide me with more information? In other words, more specific exercises that she might remember doing. Think about the strain that ab work can put on your core muscles...pelvic floor....lower abdominals. If she was doing boat pose for instance, she may have strained the abdominal muscle group. Also, if she was doing intensive warrior series or triangle pose she could potentially strain the Psoas muscle (think hip flexor) which could potentially radiate pain into the abdomen. Is it way low abdomen?

I think you are on to something!!! Unfortunately, there are a lot more injuries in yoga than people realize. I'm certified fitness instructor, specialty is Pilates, so I've done a lot of work. I'm NOT a doc or PT but feel you are heading in the right direction!

I had interstycial cysitits starting at age 16. Its bascially an inflammation of the space between the bladder wall and bladder lining. When I hold it - I get excruciating double over pain that causes my stomach to swell as if I had my period (bloating). Basically I hemorage slightly.

The fact that this started when she held her bladder sounds more like its something that is associated with her bladder, but you also may be on to something in the direction you are going in. I just wanted to bring up what I've gone through, because its good to think of all possibilites. Interstycial Cysitis is very hard to diagnose, only with a scope into the bladder, and most doctors never go in this direction.

Melanie has a great point. I'd make sure they tested her for IC, and if not follow-up with that as well.

I think you have a few great paths to research. IC can be extremely painful!!!

Her pediatrician (& a friend from gymnastics days) has IC, & thought of that, but nothing showed on any tests & antibiotics & diflucan did nothing (which is what the Dr is treated with & treats others with. I figured that would be the problem....

I'm not sure what poses they were doing, but met with the teacher yesterday & he said this yoga is intense, not like Hatha. Her pain is lower left. over where you would expect ovaries. It is actually exactly under & slightly to the center of one of her hernia scars which is what started me thinking.

Hopefully Dr will call back today & we can talk more.

thanks for confirming my suspicions!!

Actually,
IC doesn't show up on ANY test except for a scope they insert into the bladder. It also doesn't get cured with anitbiotics - it's an incurrable auto immune disease. When I was 16, I used DSMO as a treatment installed into my bladder twice weekly until I got the treatments spaced out. When I was maybe 19 or 20 I stopped treatments all together because I realized that the pain would eventually go down to a manageable point after a few days.

You may be thinking of just a cycitis of the bladder which is treated with antibiotics and shows up in urine tests. This type of infection is just that - an infection that can be cured and goes away. This is totally different, which is why it goes untreated for the majority of people in the US. It may not be what she has, but you never know. Holding your bladder when you have this causes extreme pain. Mine showed up when I was 16, although getting it that young is usually not normal. It normally shows up in people when they are older.

This is a chronic disease that I will have for the rest of my life. It affects my everyday life because I go to the bathroom so frequently, I have no idea what it means to sleep through the night (can't hold it that long - except occasionally), and if I hold it too long (or sometimes just going too often) causes immense pain that makes my stomach bloat.
