I tend to do Iams when it's on sale. Anything store brand that's comparable or any suggestions for how to save?

I have found that the better quality food you use less. I find are the equilivant of junk food for people the cheaper you get.

I agree quality counts - I do know though that a dog is better off with a person of limited means that feeds them ( and loves them) the best they can, then with jerk that drives a beemer but feeds them Ol Roy. If you have a Costco nearby, their Kirkland brand of lamb and rice has had high rating from consumer reports. Every dog is different, just remember to do a slow switch to give their tummies time to adjust. Dog foods often have food coloring that appeals to us, but doesn't do a thing for the dog. When you do find a quality food that fits your budget and your dog - don't forget about coupons and frequent reward programs some stores have.

What in the world does that have to do with anything? So if someone drives a nice car, they can't care for a pet??

Come on..............

good to know about Kirkland, we don't have a Costco but a friend has one near her, I could stock up when I visit

I've liked other Kirkland items

The point I was making about the "jerk with the beemer" ( which obviously flew right over your head), was that love is the most important thing. I think everyone has known someone with big bucks (which is fine) but they are cheapskates to the nth degree. There are some people that are outright stingy, including stingy in their soul.

I am looking for a decent dog food. The only store choices where I live are Walmart, Target, Kmart, Fleet Farm, and Menards. Any suggestions? It is for a 44 pound beagle (maybe mixed with lab) with no known allergies and no health issues.

We switched to the Kirkland stuff last year - at $23 for 40lbs for a good quality dog food, it cannot be beat!!

Is Kirkland the Costco brand? Like Sam's Club has a name for their brand of things? We don't have a Costco up here so I was wondering of it was sold elsewhere.

We buy the Kirkland dog food, no problems with it. I saw a lady at Costco buying it too and she happens to breed dogs and said the Kirkland has the same if not better nutrients than some of the expensive big name brands.

Sams club members mark brand "Exceed" has the same ingredients and same percentages as the expensive brands. They have both Chicken and Lamb formula 44 lbs for about $27.

I don't own a dog so don't know how much saving it is but when husband was in Pet Supplies Plus buying cricket I saw a sign that said sign up and buy 9 bags of dog food get the 10th free. I don't know if that might help. Good luck finding what your looking for.

I would suggest for you to go to Fleet Farm. We have hunting dogs (right now just 7) but we feed them 50lbs a week and they are fully satisified with their food. But if you look at the ingredients on the back make sure that is the first ingredient is meat in the food. If it starts out with corn or something similiar don't get it.

I got your point and its a good one. There are plenty of places in one's budget to scrimp, but dogfood is not one of them.

Go to www.dogfoodanalysis.com for recommendations. I don't know about Menards or Fleet Farm but I know that you generally want to stay away from any foods at Target, K-Mart or Wal-Mart. But, I would imagine Purina One in that case would be the best option...but look at the ratings. If your dog is overweight, I would try to go for a grain-free food. We spend more to buy Orijen initially (not sure if you have any Pet Supply Stores or Feed Stores because they carry it but you can check brand websites). A 30 lbs. bag is about $60 but it lasts over four months for two dogs (a 15 lbs. Boston Terrier and 40 lbs. Mutt) and they have a program where you buy 12 bags, you get the 13th free. Some stores have much different programs. If you have a PETCO near you, they have buy 10 bags, get one free and they carry Wellness and Solid Gold which are outstanding brands, not much more than the cheaper stuff and a bag lasts long. We bought Purina for the longest time, and it was cheaper per bag, but we had to buy a lot more of them so in the end switching to a quality food has saved me so much more money. Especially with our cats because we have seven of them! Good Luck!

The Kirklands brand is pretty good lots of my neighbors use it for their dogs. Unfortunately, it still has some by-products that my dog's tummy can't tolerate so we're back to EaglePack which is all natural and as my DH says "way too much!" :lmao:

I think I have enough Iams and Science Diet to get us through the end of summer when we can go visit our friends in VT and go to Costoco. That hadn't even entered my mind as an option so thanks!

One way to save is to make sure that you aren't overfeeding your dog. Often the recommendations on the bag are too high. I have two Labs and a beagle and they are at their optimum weights eating 2.75 cups a day for the Labs and about 1.25 cups a day for the beagle. The bag would tell me to feed them more than that. So, first, make sure you aren't overfeeding, then look for a high quality food that fits your budget. I feed Canidae all life stages and I get it at a good price at Pet supplies PLus. It often goes on sale and I get a couple bags when that happens. With three dogs, we plow through the food. I have heard good things about the Kirkland brand, but I also don't have a Costco in my area. Feeding a quality food reduces waste and trips to the vet, so keep that in mind as well. Sometimes a bargain food isn't a bargain if it gives your pet health issues (e.g. allergies etc)
