Can you please tell me what type of shaver to buy for grooming our cat? She has long, fine fur and she gets bad fur mats on her behind. Just trimming the fur isn't working anymore, and the one time that our vet shaved her behind was the only time she's been mat-free lately. We would like to spend under $100 for the shaver if possible, and we would like something that will allow us to get the job done as quickly as humanly possible! Thanks for your recommendations!

I'm not a vet or a vet tech, but I've had a lot of experience with clippers (just in horses though). Maybe the following info will help some.

www.jefferspet.com

If you'll check this site, you'll find quite a few options. I noticed that a couple of them specified cats and dogs while some just said pets. You can search for both clippers and cat clippers.

We buy a lot of stuff from this company's horse site and have been very pleased with them (both prices and service). Personally, we like the Oster brand clippers, but we have friends who use the Andis brand and like them. Some of the clippers you'll see are way over your price range, but those are primarily for horses (maybe some for dogs).

You may have to buy a different set of blades to meet your needs (different blades do different jobs).

Also not a vet, but I use regular old human hair clippers on my cat. They make ones for kids that are quieter, and thus less likely to freak kitty out ;) We had some issues while she was getting used to them, but now she comes right over when I pull them out!

Edited to add- I think the ones I use were around $15 at Wal-Mart.

Honestly, I think that's what I'd try too. We have, in an emergency, used the human ones from Wal-Mart too and were able to get by with them until we got a heavy duty replacement set ordered (this was on horses with very coarse manes). In fact, we keep a set on hand "just in case".
