I am travelling over Thanksgiving and I think my 21yr old niece is going to join us. She is a vegan. I would love any experiences, suggestion and imput I can get in order to help her find food to eat. I will be bringing some staples for her as we are driving and she is flying. I have seen the list on allears, but it does not look very up to date and I would just love some personal DIS imput. I am not too worried about TS as I will call ahead, I am more worried about CS. By the way she is strict, no refined sugar etc... However I do not know if on vacation she would be ok with a dish prepared for her if she did not know the origin of the sugar in it. Thank you.

I am not, but I know that I saw an article on vegan dining at Disney World at allears.net. It is right on the front page. The World is great about having a chef visit your table and really work with the diner whether they be vegan, diabetic, gluten-free and so on.

Another option, I work for a restaurant that has a location in Orlando on Sand Lake Road called Season's 52. They keep tons of fresh vegetables in house and will work with you on what you can and can't eat. Definitely make a reservation and when you do let them know that you have a vegan diner.

My dh likes to eat like that but not all the time . We tried the Wave for that
reason. It was good there.

I don't eat any poultry, meat, or dairy at all. Occasionally fish and eggs.

Every counter service has a binder. You can ask for it and read all the ingredients of every item they serve. Almost all CS that serve burgers have Boca burgers (vegan) and Ener-G rolls (vegan and gluten free). All bread in Disney has milk in it. ALL! Which stinks!

I also found a delicious veggie sandwich at the backlot express they made with no cheese for me. Try to go early to CS restuarants as they have to specially prepare your order and it takes longer.

TS meals are easy as long as you let the server know the issue. The chef will come and talk to you and make a vegan meal. The only place I had a hard time was Wolgang Puck Express. They were very adament that they couldn't prepare anythign for me so I got a bowl of lettuce and dressing. Not my best meal.

Here are some items I know to be safe to eat:

Apple stuffed pretzel and Min and Bills in HS
All popcorn
Divvies snacks (in every park but only at certian locations)
The mainstreet icecream shop has tofutti and rice dream. I believe you can get it at HS and AK. Not sure about Epcot.
Itzakadoozi popsicles
All fruit and nuts (usually)

Just have her pre-read the menus on Allearsnet and then she'll have a rough idea of where she might find something to eat. I heard rumors that ToY Story Pizza Planet makes a vegan pizza but we never tired it.

Boma is THE BEST for vegan eating. The chef will walk the line with you and let you know what you can eat. Then they'll make you a vegan dessert!

Good luck!

Hi PoohHappens!

(love your name)

I've been eating a Vegan diet for over a year now, and went to WDW last Feb for the 1st time since my dietary change. I was worried about options, but it really was not an issue.

Most (if not all) CS restaurants offer a veggie wrap, veggie burger, or veggie flatbread. We stayed at SSR and I LOVED the Artist Palette - they had choices. :)

Some of the TS options that I enjoyed included Cali Grill & Jiko. If you book reservations, you can note "no dairy", and while they list it as an allergy, if gives the option of a phone number to call and/or you can meet with the chef upon checking in.

We didn't try for any breakfasts... not eating eggs or dairy, if seemed pointless to go that route, and we'd have fruit and granola in the room in the AM. But I was very pleased with the choices I had in the parks.

If you have specific ???s, please let me know - I'll be happy to answer them. We're planning another trip for this coming Feb, and after much deliberation chose not to do the dining plan - I don't expect many desserts to be dairy-free.

Enjoy!

casjen--thank you for all the great info. Boma is where I just made a reservation for a birthday celebration for her--before I read this. Now I feel that is really the right choice. Dining gave me the number and Larry the Boma Bakery Chef is going to call me back so we can make sure there is a sweet something for her. I don't know if he can address the sugar issue, but she might be OK with it one time. We are just so surprised she wanted to come with us. Our son her cousin will be 7 at time of travel. They share a birthday and when she was 14 she was not happy about it. We always promised we would never have a joint birthday party:lmao: What is Ener-G roll? does that substitue the bun?? So do we need to ask for that with a boca to ensure vegan. I also heard the fries are vegan as long as not MCD fries.

Joyful Pixiedust--Are the wraps and flatbreads vegan?? No lard, dairy or other ingredients of problem? Thank you also for your great info and I may save your signature to PM you if I come up with other questions. I was concerned about breakfast for her, we have full breakfast every morning. I think she is going to sleep in and just eat in the room when she gets up and then meet up with us.

Anyone know what market would be the best if we need a couple extra things. I think Goodings, Publix and Winn Dixie are the closest. I will be bringing some things for her. Also we have a car and are happy to eat off site if there is somewhere recommended. My last challenge will be feeding her for thanksgiving dinner.

Whole Foods just recently opened a store very close to Disney property. It's located at the intersection of I4 and Sandlake road. Check out the directions/map on their website. They have a TON of dietary stuff and the place is huge, bigger then a normal grocery store!!!:thumbsup2

Columbia Harbour House has hummus and veggies and they also have vegetarian chili. I've heard it's vegan, but you would need to inquire about it. The Terrace Noodle House has some kind of teriyaki tofu w/ rice and veggies. I know there's some bread at Earl of Sandwich that is vegan. She'll have to get creative with her fillings, but they have a delicious cranberry spread that will jazz it up. The Ice Cream Parlor has both tofutti and rice dream so everybody can have an ice cream-y treat together. I know there are some other counter service options other than boca burgers (most places have those), but I can't seem to think of them right now! By the way, you're a great aunt for all of your concern.

I'm a vegetarian and I hate eggs (so almost a vegan lol!), and I've never had any issues finding food that I would enjoy and could fill up on. Someone mentioned the wraps at the CS, and these are okay. The boca burgers are pretty good, and if she won't eat the bread, she could also get a small salad and chop the boca burger up to put over that (more filling and feels more like a real meal that way).
As far as individual restaurants, there's a nice lunch/dinner at Nine Dragons that's made with tofu and veggies which I liked. Anyway, she probably won't have any issues, and I'd bet that (like me) she's used to asking for individual items, if need be, and combining them to form a balanced meal. :goodvibes

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We are really excited she is joining us. Whole Foods Close by is great. I had thought the only one was further away. I have heard some of the asian places in WDW still cook the food in chicken stock even when it is a veggie item. :confused3 I checked out those Divvies cookies and they look good. I think we will be fine I just wanted to have all the info for her I could. Thanks again the DIS is great.

Just tell them you want the vegan boca burger and roll. They should serve her the boca burger and Ener-G roll. It's just a gluten free/allergen free roll. Have her double check the ingredients but I am pretty sure it has no eggs.

The fries are fine as long as they aren't Mcdonalds. I ate them a few times and it was fine. But she can always substitute grapes or applesauce for fries.

I went through the allearsnet menus and made a list of restaurants I should be able to eat in and carried it with us so I didn't have to hunt around for food.

We eat vegetarian, but only vegan by chance. ;) I'm a big soup fan. I found that many of the vegetarian soups are truly vegetarian -- no meat stock. Make sure to check with the chef. I also found the chefs to be really accommodating especially at buffets. We have walked the line with them and they have pointed out anything with hidden unacceptable ingredients. Most of the time, if we need something "adjusted," they are happy to please.

I always ask for fruit substitute for fries, and that is never a problem.

A few years ago, we went to Planet Hollywood and my son in law had a portebella burger......It was huge and had all the fixings of tomatoes and lettuce on his too...Looked like a real one to us carnivores..most of the restaurants we went to had something that he was able to eat.....ASK when in doubt and call ahead of time to inquire

LETs all remember that we are all have different likes and dislikes.....and to respect others ........thank you

Pumba reminded me of two of my favorite sandwiches -- both on the Boardwalk. ESPN Club and Boardwalk Bakery both have grilled veggie sandwiches. I don't know if the breads are vegan, but you could check. The sandwiches are wonderful and huge!
