WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort
Orlando, Florida (Abbreviation: WDW)

Resort News - (4/2/04) We’ve heard that a new test program for resort guests called The Park After Dark would attempt to replace the Extra Magic Hour program for resort guests. In this case, instead of one of the parks opening an extra hour early for resort guests, one park may stay open up to three hours later for resort guests.
Now if this does happen, i would have to give kudos to wdw and it would give me a reason to stay on site.
But i dont know how much chance there is of this happening.

That would be sooo nice... We don't like to get up early, and we love WDW at night. But I am afraid it's wishful thinking. Isn't this what the "E Ride Night" is -- and they charge for that, right?

Would we be trading 7 EE days ( or 7 extra hours a week) for one or two 3 hr nites ?

Is it really practical at AK and Epcot ?

Will guests with young kids really be able to use the late nites ?

Will they close the parks earlier on After Dark days ?

Personally, I would like the After Dark park hours. I've never done EE, just something about getting up early while I'm on vacation I guess, but I am a niteowl so After Dark is perfect. But it's also hard to believe that if Disney "gives" us this, they won't "take" something else. We could only hope it will be a fair trade.

These really are the two key questions as far as I'm concerned.

First off, if they close the parks earlier than they would have just so they can "keep them open later" for this program it would be terrible. Also, are we talking a park each day being open 3 hours later, or just a couple of times a week?

Secondly, what percentage of overall guests would be served by this program, as compared to EMH? Many families with kids might not be able to make use of this program while they are currently using EMH. Personally, while we don't make EMH every day, we do take advantage of it several days a week. With young kids, having a park open past 9:00 does nothing for us. As the kids get older that would change, but now it doesn't serve us very well. Of course I don't look at this from a purely personal POV. Bottom line, if fewer overall guests attend "After Dark" than attended EMH then the program would be a negative. Of course "Parks After Dark" would be quite a nifty little advertising gimmick. I can see the commercials now. If this is purely an advertising gimmick designed to attract more people to visit WDW that ultimately serves fewer guests I'd be disappointed. If it turns into $$$ over guest experience.....not the direction we should be going in.

But who knows if it will even happen...............................

Hmmmm.... Jets on MNF or three tired kidds being strollered thru MK at 10 pm.......... makes me wonder about that statement.

If its to late for the kids that is a positive!!!! Smaller crowds mean smaller lines!!!
Ive always enjoyed EE, but i like 3hrs much better than 1 to 1/2 hrs. I ALWAYS use EE and would do the same with this program.
As for kids, they can catch up on sleep when they get home, but on vaction its park commando time!!!
On my visit in Dec. im not staying on site at wdw because i dont find enough value in the disney resorts, but this would make me change my plans.

If they stayed open later, how would they be able to kick out all the people already in the park that are not staying on WDW property. Seems like that would be more difficult then letting people in early .

My kids are night owls and like to sleep in....apparently even the 3 week old (and our 4yo in particular). This would work for us.

As always...we'll wait and see if it happens.

Maybe they would close the park at 6 or 7p and open it back up at 8 or 9 (thinking of MK).

They would do it the same way they work E-ride nights. you get a wristband and everyone without a wristband can't get on the rides.

As far as being bad for kids. I'm not convinced it makes much of a difference. Disney was open till midnight or later for decades and it didn't seem to do so badly. EE is only good for those "freaks" that are morning people. Those people chap my hide. ;)

That's exactly what I was thinking!!!

They already do something similar to what you are saying.

It is called and E-Ride Night at the Magic Kingdom where you can stay in the park after hous and ride all the rides with no wait.

I came across this in my planning of our DW trip from the Birnbaums guide.

I loved Enights when the family and I went, we wished it would stay open later.

So does some one have any real scoop on this rumour :hyper:

I like this idea - I hope it happens. We are usually up and at the park for opening (or right after), but we NEVER do EE.

here is what someone sent to me from an official Disney site:

"Walt Disney World theme parks will test a varied Extra Magic Hour schedule from May 9-22 to include time in both the early morning and evening. (The Extra Magic Hour offering lets many on-property Guests enjoy particular theme parks for an extra morning hour before the participating park opens to other Guests.)

Many Guests utilizing the Extra Magic Hour offering have requested the opportunity to enjoy this benefit in the evening, as well in the morning hours.

The revised schedule will give Guests eight opportunities to enjoy the Extra Magic Hour each week (one hour prior to and as many as three hours after regularly scheduled park hours). Guests staying at Disney-owned-and-operated resorts, as well as those staying at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, or the Lake Buena Vista Hilton, may enjoy both the morning and evening Extra Magic Hours at no charge with valid theme park admission. Guests staying at Shades of Green may participate in the morning offering only"
