Any "tricks" for getting my cat into his carrier? Update post #25

My cat hates getting in his kennel. I just kinda.... stuff him in backwards while avoiding the claws. Just gotta be patient with him and take it slow... eventually I get him in there.

I have a bag that opens on the the ends. I have my son hold the cat, I hold the bag open with the end UP, he drops the cat in and we zip it before he can get his bearings to get out.

I have 5 cats and we move A LOT. It's now a skill I had to master! :thumbsup2

Over the years, I've had only scaredy cats and I've found that the best way to get them into their carriers is this:
Lure them out by using whatever works (food, treats, or even just enlisting the help of your family to chase and grab the kitty-- traumatizing, I'm sure, but it works). Then, I put my cat into a pillow case so I won't have to endure the rath of their claws. I have my carrier already open and then I put the cat (in the pillowcase) into the carrier, close/lock the carrier, and wa lah!! The kitty can get out of the pillow case once it's in the carrier very easily. Not once has one of my cats ever been stuck in the pillowcase so that's nothing to worry about. The same method works for getting kitty into the carrier post-vet visit, unless your vet does it himself.

Best of luck!! This is certainly a tricky situation!

Might not help now but when we got our new kittens they told us to take them out in the carrier once a week just for a drive so they would not associate it only with the vet. It worked! Both of them will just go in when we set the carrier out. Most helpful as they go with us to the lake on weekends. Our cat we had before would fight to the bitter end rather than go in the carrier!!! she hated it.

Well, we're back! No problem with simba - he just cried the whole way there and back.

Tigger on the other hand.....he got weighed and temp taken. When we got him out again to have the Vet check him out, he went wild! The Vet called it "reverting back to feral"! He bounced off the walls. We were afraid he'd hurt himself - or us! The Vet suggested only bringing him in if he's sick. So I guess that means no shots for him. It wasn't very easy getting him back into the carrier again. Man, I'd never seen him like that! Not pleasant.

Poor kitty! He must have been so freaked out! I adopted my kitty as an adult cat and have never taken her anywhere. I don't know if that makes me a bad pet parent, but she's an only kitty, and has never, ever, been outdoors. The only time she was in a carrier was when she came to our house. I don't think I could ever get her in a carrier! I appreciate the tips here in case I ever have to. If I ever get a kitten, we'll go for rides so the kitty won't be afraid of the carrier or the car.

We have vets here that make housecalls and it is the best thing EVER for cats.

Yearly exam and shots and I never have to leave the house.

Genius idea!!

OP- glad things went well for Simba! Your poor other kitty! :guilty: Glad they're both healthy though!

One of our cats is like that at the vet. Normally the sweetest, most mild-mannered boy ever, but gets positively MEAN at the vet. (And at 17 pounds, with a siamese temper... it's scary! )

Our vet actually asked us not to bring him back again unless he really, really, really, really needed it. :rotfl:

Over the years we have had 7 cats. My very first cat was a handful to say the least. I had to give her valium to take her to the vet. The vet would call our pharmacy and I would pick the "pill" up, give it to her and off we would go.

Right now we have two 10 week kittens - will be going to the vet soon with them. Should prove interesting!

So sorry. Poor kitty.

I had to take my cat in for his checkup this morning. He loves his crate though. A gentle nudge, and he goes right in.

I took him out to see the vet, and he hid under a table in the corner. But after the visit, I opened his crate and he went right in.

My cat is pretty anti-social, so the crate for him is way better than being around strangers.

He got a rabies shot, and that was that!

if they will chase a string/rope, then thread a long one through the back of the carrier and out the front; then try to slowly drag it so they follow it in....

course, our cat just steps right in when I stick him in front of it and give him a nudge inside..... :thumbsup2
