The last time we were in Orlando was Dec 2001 w/ my late husband. Now that I am alone with my two children DS 6 and DD 4 and we're going for our first time in USF/IOA...Is there any tips or any infos I need to know to make my trip easy w/ them?? Any Do's or Don'ts I need to know so their trip would be enjoyable one and so I can enjoy it as well??

Thanks for any tips or suggestions or any infos you'd like to share. :)

If you want to ride Pteranodon (and I do recommend it as my DD5 enjoyed it more than anything else there), do that the first thing in the morning, because it does not accept Express Pass or room keys. Looks like you are staying on site, so you can tour the rest of both parks at your own pace once you clear Pteranodon.

Is your daughter into boy bands/kiddie pop music? My DD5 LOVED the Ghostbusters show and sang along the whole thing.

To me, not having to stand in like with anxious kids made my whole trip so much more enjoyable and relaxing than would be otherwise. You'll love it, too. Have fun!

Have them wear bathing suits or nylon shorts to the parks. And take a beach towel. There are so many opportunities to get wet. There are several little water parks to play in. The Feivel area has a waterslide my kids loved. We missed that the first time. The Curious George area is a big water play area but there is a building in the back that has a big foam ball play area. We have one here at home called the FOAM FACTORY. (We missed this the first time, too.) The Barney show has a little play area at the end (you can go through the store to get to it if they do not want to see the show). The swings at JP are a lot of fun for that age, but the line gets to be 50 mins long for a 60 second ride. We will do that one first this next time.

You will love the Portofino Beach pool. The kids will have a blast and there will be a little luxury for Mom. have you thought about throwing the kids in the kid's camp and having a massage at the spa? Maybe a wonderful dinner? You deserve it, or at least you will by the end of the trip!! I can't wait for my youngest to be 4 so I can do this, they would love it. Have a great time!

Thanks Yoko and zaxmom for sharing your tips. I totally forgot about the kid's camp. I am probably going to have them go maybe for two times so I can have some quiet time for myself. Now, does anybody know how much the cost for the camp? Which camp is nicer or better sevice of the three resort?

That's a great idea about having them wear bathing suits or the nylon pants. JP and Pteranodon?? I'm in trouble here! There's a lot to learn about Universal! I guess I'll start from here from this board.

Thanks guys...I'm sure no matter what...we will still enjoy our trip. As long as no one gets sick or no one throws tantrum.

Anybody else would like to chime in? Any parents who have small children...how do you handle kids their age in the parks? Thanks in advance. :)

Fantasia, First of all I want to say that I'm very sorry about your husband. I would imagine that it's hard finding the strength to go on a trip like this without him and I think it's great that you are doing it!

Depending on the height of your children you should be able to bring them on most of the rides, with the exception of the big coasters, etc. Of course that depends on how daring they are. How tall is your 4yo?

Good idea about wearing the bathing suits and bringing a towel. We also wear waterproof type sport sandals, especially in IoA so we can go on the barge ride without later having to walk around with wet sneakers.

If you can, get to the parks early and then take an afternoon break back at the hotel, and head back to the parks later.

We haven't used the kids club since our oldest is 15yo and able to babysit her little brothers. We will have her watch them once this trip (we'll get there one month from today!) so we can have some adult time. You might even want to use the kids club one evening so you can go to IoA and ride the thrill rides that they are not able to do. That is if you like that type of ride.

I had to laugh about nobody throwing a tantrum. It seems that I don't go a day, and sometimes an hour, without my 3yo having one of those!

Have fun, you deserve it!

Thanks Tigger&Belle. It is going to be hard on me going alone with my fully energetic kids that fights w/ each other sometimes. I was thinking of bringing another adult with me, but the only thing is that I don't have enough money to fly that person and buy their tickets and their meals. And they don't have enough money either for them to go. I am still going to do it. With the help from all the wonderful people here on the DIS...You guys will give me the courage that I can do it and I will do it. Even if going to see two attractions at a time or 2 rides at a time in one day...I will do it...I just wanna see my kids enjoy themselves. My kids deserve this trip... They have been patient with me. I am only one and they know I have to play two roles. They are my heroes...without them, I don't know where I would be. Anyways...

I'm not sure how tall my daughter is but I guess I'm sure that there is a gauge on every entrance of the ride to see if the kids are tall enough...well I hope there is one at every ride. I think that's a great idea... go to the park early morn' then take a break back to the hotel and just go back to the park later...that is if they want to go back out again. I will take advantage of hopping to the other pools. I know Disney would never allow to pool hop.

Any suggestions as to where to dine without breaking my bank and the kids will enjoy the food?? I'm interested in character meals as well. Any infos or inputs on this one??

I am so sorry this is long and that I have many ??? that I am throwing here. Right now, I am kind of nervous about this trip. This is my very first trip w/ the kids alone. I just hope everything turns out ok. Thanks everyone...in advance.

Fantasia, too bad you won't be there a few days before. We'll be leaving the day you arrive! I'll try to remember my green ribbon--maybe we'll spot each other. :)

The front-of-the line access will make all the difference for you. Except for a couple of exceptions (the Pteranodon Flyer ride, for one) you won't have to wait in long lines. If your daughter is 40" tall you will be able to go on Spiderman and Back to the Future (my 3yo is right at the 40" mark and I hope he stands up straight so we can all go on it) and if she is 42" you can do MIB (one of my favorites--very fun!) and the Barge raft ride (very wet).

We were good at eating cheap, at least as cheap as we could with 4 children, most of them with big appetites. We kept food in the room (Nutrigrain bars, juice, etc) and ate quick breakfasts before going to the parks. I brought oranges, little peanut bags, etc into the parks for when we got the munchies. We then either ate a late breakfast or early lunch and an early dinner. One of those meals was sit down and the other not. So basically we only bought 2 meals a day. My kids eat a lot, but they don't like big breakfasts so that worked for us. We liked the Monster Cafe (counter serve) and loved Mythos (our nicest sit down meal). We were only there for 3 days and I'm trying to remember where else we ate.

It helps to have snacks available in case hunger hits when you are waiting for a show, etc. Also, make sure that you have water with you. We used a 1 quart Igloo type water jug that we refilled in the parks whenever we needed to.

You have a great attitude and will have a wonderful time with your kids. I take care of two children who lost their dad when the now 7yo was 2yo. They recently went to WDW and had a great time. It took their mother a long time to work up the time and energy (and $) to make that trip.

Remember to take lots of pictures!

Fantasia! I can't believe I finally found you!!! How wonderful that you're taking the kids to Universal. You have been in my thoughts so often. You are very brave & you will do just fine taking this trip with the kids. I think it'll be wonderful for all of you.

I don't have any helpful hints to offer you since the only Universal Studio's I ever went to was the one in California! Just be sure the kids are drilled about not leaving your side for one moment!

When you have time, PM me so that I know how you're all doing & where you are now.

Have a great time on your vacation! You deserve it!

Plan on spending alot of time in the "Woody Woodpecker kidzone" in Universal. Besides the curious George wet area, there is Barney, a kiddie coaster, the fore mentioned ball play area, Animal Planet show and ET. We brought bathing suits and towels with us and the kids changed after they were done playing.

In IOA,thoroughly explore every nook and crannie of Suess Landing. There is a little courtyard with "Horton Hears a Who's" egg. You can sit on it and take pictures. Also, next to the water (behind green eggs and Ham) there are some funny things to see. Camp Jurassic has many "caves and slides" to explore but keep close to the kids. It's easy to get lost in there, lol. Don't miss the "magic fountain" in the lost continent. It's near Sinbad show and looks like an ordinary water fountain. Send your kids closer to throw in a coin!

I'm sorry about your husband. I hope you and your kids have as nice a trip as possible.

Just went to US/IOA Feb 11 and 12. Do not know about the times when you are going, but US was open one hour later than IOA. My DS7 loved the Woody Woodpecker coaster at US and the Flying Unicorn coaster at IOA, and the Animal Planet show at US. We could not keep DS7 and DS12 off of MIB. That is a blast. The Flyer swings at IOA we never got to do, there was always a 45 minute wait. So go early on this one, it looks like fun. One word of warning on the Spiderman ride at IOA, it is a blast but a lot of little ones were terrified. It is pretty intense. It took DS7 three times to ride it and keep his eyes open all the time and he will ride ANYTHING! LOL. Be sure and look at your map for the times your kiddos can meet and get their picture with Spiderman. It's at the IOA park not far from the ride. You will love ET and Back to the Future. I hope you have a wonderful time, you deserve it. My heart goes out to you.

Thank you Mishetta, nhrenee and Texan.

Thanks for the tips and your advice. I will definitely have them wear their swimming suits. My kids are pretty young so we will take our time at the "Woody Woodpecker kidzone" and Suess Landing. I don't know about MIB, Back to the Future, and Spiderman. I don't do rollercoaster or thrill ride type of thing and my kids are probably too small for them. Just wondering if MIB is anything like "Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin" where you have to target all the "Zs" while you're riding. Is it something like that?

Hmmm...now I feel like a nuisance here. Asking too many questions. I probably need to buy a book on these two parks. But it is always nice to know from someone who have actually rode in it, who have experienced it. This way, I know exactly what to expect. And you guys are giving me your insights on this one..Thanks everyone!! :)

Not into thrill rides...so I would definitely would need to find out which ones are the kiddie ride.

Anyone else would like to chime in. All these are wonderful tips and I will use these suggestions. Anything that will make our trip easy relaxing, manageable and enjoying. This is why I extended my trip to 7 nights so we will be able to see everything there is to see and do at the Universal without rushing and have enough time to enjoy the resort.

Fantasia,

I am a HUGE Disney fan but once your kids go on MIB, they will never want to go on Buzz Lightyear again! It is just like Buzz but I refer to it as "Buzz on steroids".

I don't like thrill rides at all either. We are going in Dec. with my 4 year old and 7 year old and here are my favorites I was planning to take them to: (most of the tamer rides are 40' except MIB you have to be '42). I'm hoping my son will grow before Dec. He only has 3 inches to go :)

ET
Back to the future
Men in Black
Woody Woodpecker roller coaster
Animal Planet Live
If open when you go:
Shrek
Jimmy Neutron

Spiderman
Seuss Landing
Flying Unicorn
Camp Jurassic
Pterandon flyer

The other water areas that were listed above I'm sure are great too. My kids probably won't be interested in Barney but one never knows.

Have a great trip! Marley

As for Spiderman, my daughter at 4 years old loved it, and my son was 7.. they will adore it! (think like a simulator/but much much better)

My kids also liked the Jurassic Park ride as well.

Men in Black is fantastic, and so much better themed than Buzz... but the same general idea.. Buzz will look so well, sad in comparison.

If you have the time and of course $$$, you might want to consider going to Sea World. We went for the first time in August and we LOVED it. My kids are younger (going on 5 and 3) and they loved it. I don't know if they are still doing this, but they had a buy one day get a free return day within that week. We spent two half days there. One morning and one night. It was great to split it up like that. As for eating places that don't break the bank, forget it. I thought that all the places were fairly pricy and they don't offer as many fast food options outside of the parks as they do at Disney. I think that Pastamore at CityWalk has a walk-up window. Will you have a car? There are a lot of options on I-Drive, but you would have to have a car. I have heard rumors that the hotels have characters show up at some of the meals. I need to find out about the Scooby and Shaggy one myself.
I am sure you guys will have a great time. We have fun and my little one has several tantrums a day! It sounds like you will have a lot of time to relax by the pool and enjoy everything at a leisurely pace. Take time to smell the roses and in our case splash in the puddles. FOTL is awesome and will help out a lot.
Sounds like your kids are just the right age for a first trip with just the three of you. What a cool mom they have!

AWWWW!!!! :) Thanks guys!!

Thanks for the tips on which ones to ride on! Spiderman? I just hope that this is nothing like the "Body Wars". All we got from that ride was a big headache!
And what about Back to the future...this isn't a rollercoaster kind of ride is it? I don't do the "plungging...flipping...falling...upside down kind of thing".

Yes, I am thinking of going to Sea World and from my understanding from this board that Universal has a shuttle bus for this. I will not have a car, so I do hope that there is shuttle bus for this one.

I guess eating off-site is not an option. I guess I would really have to save money for the food. Does Universal allow sharing the meal? I am very tiny and I don't eat much and my daughter who is only 4 don't eat much either (however, she eats often), do you think they will allow me and my daughter to share our meal and then I will just buy my DS 6 his own kiddie meal? I hope so cause it would be a waste of money throwing most of the food.

Thank you everyone for helping me out and giving me some suggestions. They are all wonderful tips!

I'm sure I can find a book on Universal Orlando...right? Maybe this way I am not too clueless when I get there. I like planning ahead then this way I know what to expect so I can be prepared especially alone with my kids.

Again...thank you! Thanks in advance if anyone else have any more suggestions or infos.

Sincerely,
Telly

The best book to buy for US is the book by Kelly Monaghan, something like Universal Studios 2003, The Ultimate Guide, etc. Be sure and get the 2003 version. It was so detailed and every ride was exactly as he laid it out. Also many, many tips on eating. Definitely the one to buy. Around $12.00.

MIB is definitely like Buzz, but a little more intense, but definitely fun.

Fantasia,

You mentioned in one of your posts about checking heights at
each individual ride. Outside the ticket booths at IOA, there are
measuring sticks for each of the rides with height requirements.
Plan on stopping here and you will know in advance which rides
your kids will be able to get on.

I know it's been mentioned in passing but I cannot tell you how
much fun my boys (and their dad!) had at the Curious George
Ball Factory. If you don't know what you're looking for you could
miss it completely as it sits behind the VERY wet zone. You can
stilll reach it by following the footprints on the left side of the
wet zone which will keep you dry. It's a large building where
kids of all ages vacuum up small foam balls and shoot them at
each other through various types of projectiles. My kids spent
2 1/2 hours in there one night! Even my now 13 y/o DS still begs
for time in the Ball Factory. I don't know how popular Barney is
with your little ones but when my now 9 y/o DS was about 5,
he was absolutely delighted with the Barney show. (He'd shoot
me if he knew I posted this in public--at this age Barney is most
definitely persona non grata!) The look of delight on his little
face was worth the price of admission for our family. He was that
happy.

You also mentioned that your two little ones fight all the time.
Well, I'd bet they have nothing in that department on my two boys. I'm not a mom, I'm a referree--except when we're at US &
IOA. They're so happy there the fights seem to magically cease.
It's a minor miracle. The only exception would be in the hotel
room, I guess then they feel they're "at home" and the battles
begin!

Have a wonderful time. You and your kids certainly deserve it.

Thanks Texan and thanks Figment for the tips and infos. Yaaay...I purchased all the books I can find on Universal. I also purchased one by Kelly Monaghan. I bought total of 4 books!! I don't know which one I want to read first!

MIB sounds like fun cause we enjoyed "Buzz"...as long as this ride is not like a rollercoster ride and not too jerky that I know we will enjoy it!

I'm just hoping that they won't be fighting out in the public and start throwing tantrum.

Thanks everyone! The time is drawing nearer!! Can't wait!!

Telly

As soon as possible, hit the library and check out The Lorax and Horton Hatches the Egg. Get whatever others you feel like. I assume you have Cat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish.

REad them out loud as much as possible. Take them with you on the trip and read them after visiting the Seuss area. It's so much more interesting if your kids have some idea about the stories.

Take a special plastic bag with quarters and shiny pennies. Use the penny smash machines that are all over the park. I think you can get a little album for the smashed pennies at some of the gift shops.

Take a DIFFERENT little wallet of pennies to throw in all of the fountains all over the parks.

Not sure if someone mentioned it - budget time to talk to the Mystic fountain.

Budget money for that long hair braiding thing or temp tattoes.

HAVE FUN!

BTW, I took my 2 and 5 year old boys myself. I found the thing that made the trip the easiest was to stay on CLUB LEVEL at the hotel. That way breakfast and a light snack/dinner were included, as well as unlimited soda/juice/water all day. If you can afford it, do it!

Fantasia: It is so nice to have you back on the boards--I think of you often and how you and the children are coping. My daughter spent one night at Camp Lil Rocker. She loved it even though she was the only one there (September trip). I think it was $8 per hour, with another $8 for a meal in. There are lots of good places to eat at IOA and Universal--check out the links above Under Important: Universal Menus--they have menus from alot of the counter service places. We haven't done a character meal since they did away with the character meal at Confiscos. I think they have one at Hard Rock, but I am not sure. I do recommend Kelly Monaghan's book: Universal Orlando, as well as his other book "The Other Orlando". I ordered them both off the website: intrepidtraveler.com. If I ran the Zoo in Suess Land is great fun, but fairly easy to lose sight of kids in. Back to the Future is a lot like Body Tours/Star Wars--I find it rough. Spiderman is much smoother than Back. MIB-you kids should love. My DD loves Jaws--its so obviously a fake shark, but hates Twister and Earthquake.
