any tips on securing a good spot for Illuminations?

The fact that you self identify as "hispanic" says a lot about you. NO wonder you weren't offended. I am LATINA, my family is LATINO and we will never be "hispanic", and I did find the post extremely offensive. In fact, I reported it.

"what does it matter what language he was speaking?"

EXACTLY MY POINT

...and it looks like I DID get an argument from you, an entire paragraph of it. I think saying he "acted like he didn't speak English" would have been more than plenty to say. Instead you've pulled out a whole culture and cast them in a bad light. Again, who the heck gives a crap what language he spoke???? YOU seem to.
she was telling her story as it happened to her with details not racism! GET OVER IT!!!

We waited almost 2 hours on the benches near Canada. At the last minute a dad from German, wanted his kids to sit on the rocks next to our benches. Why did I know he was from Germany, I know German. Anyway, he kept pointing and telling his kids to climb the rocks. Only 1 person could sit on the rock, the other 4 pushed all in front of us. Thier butts were in our faces. I told the dad you can't sit on the rocks. Finally one of the other chaperones in our group, told the kids to get down and move away form our area. All the kids were older teenagers, not young kids. I felt bad for the family-but the rocks were not seats to sit on, they were 8 foot rocks.

During the show, they were behind us and during the show they managed to squeeze into the little 3 feet space again between the benches and rocks. I finally got up and moved and stood behind them. You could still see.

My guess is that she noted the language because she wanted to point out she could understand the guy due to her high school Spanish class- not because she was being racist. The point was to illustrate how she knew what was being said, obviously.

And noting the language a person speaks is not racist, thinking badly of them simply because of it would be- but this is clearly NOT what occurred.

I think you might have a bigger problem in your life today?... because you seem way too sensitive? Maybe you're just having a bad day? :grouphug:

Try to relax. When someone tells their story, by saying- "they spoke spanish"... it is not a reason to report people :lmao:

Just for the record... I am German, and I did not OhMari's post to be at all racist or offensive.

and why exactly do you find it necessary to tell us WHAT language this man spoke? Are you racist?

:sad2: sad sad sad. It's been my experience that the first people to cry racism, generally are racists themself and have their mindset to tink of everything in terms of race. You obviously didnt read the story the way everyone else in this thread did.

edit: to the OP, I have no secret spots, its been hit or miss for me when I haven gone

Just an FYI...There are MILLIONS of people that speak spanish, not just Latino or Hispanic. So saying he spoke spanish in no way identifies what nationality or orgin he is.

I think that the poster was trying to illustrate the point that the person first spoke good English, and then when they had someone try to reprimand them, that they all of a sudden were speaking in Spanish to act like they did not understand. They never said that this person was of a certain skin color or was from a certain country. I'm sure that there are plenty of caucasian people that live in Spanish speaking countries who mainly speak Spanish. I just didn't feel that this was a racist comment. :confused3
I agreeThere was absolutely nothing racist about her comment! That is just awful there is no security to throw trash like that man out of the park :furious:

you are very rude and defensive. The OP said she knew what he was saying because she understands some Spanish. You need to get a life

Since when cant you mention what language someone is speaking?

:sad2:

Ive heard many foregin languages spoke, but now I know I may never mention what they are. :rolleyes2

I didnt find it offensive - and both my boys are latino/hispanic/Puerto Rican and neither one of them can speak Spanish or anything else, for that matter.

Good Grief. This isnt a debate board nor is it a "correct my un-PC-ness" board.

There is only one racist in this discussion. I am finding more and more often that people like yourself make such a fuss because of your own underlying problems. Don't force them onto us !!

same here i am german and did not find int racist either some times people from other countries are like that being rude and all that is there culture in someways and they have to get the most out of disney because it may be there only time there i usually walk away cause i have seen things at disney and can hold off on it or i will find a new spot. im a hot temp german red head and its better for me to walk away then try to talk to the person :smokin:

Hi Twende, I am sorry to hear what happened to you. I have had similar problems but not quite as bad as that one. There are always a few bad apples (in ANY gene pool). :confused3

I am the grandma of six and my one major rule, that has worked extremely well, is that if they ask nicely I will do ALMOST anything for them BUT if they throw a fit they get NOTHING. If someone posts something rude and obnoxious on the boards I simply ignore them as making any sort of response just encourages them. Some people need attention and unfortunately they get it in the wrong ways and do not understand that being nice is ever so much more fun. :wizard:

I firmly believe that it IS possible to disagree without being disagreeable. It would be a sad and boring world if we all felt exactly the same. :grouphug: (to be shared equally no matter the country of origin)

One of our favorite things to do is get one of the tables @ the little mexican place outside by the lake, have dinner, have magaritas, and watch illuminations. We had such a good time and the best view.
Have fun!

I just wanted to take a minute this morining and thank most everyone for their ideas and support. :thumbsup2

We considered going for security but felt two problems with that. One it would separate us into two groups of two with two of those being older teenagers or it would force one of us to go alone or it wold be two females going for help or staying alone and none of those were very comfortable feelings. Two we did not want to give power to the persons acting poorly by reacting to them any more than necessary and we did so want to enjoy the show as a family. If security had been nearby you better believe we would have summoned them over!

We have always thought about getting a table at one of the countries and I think next time we shall try that. What countries have good views and great beverages or snacks as it would be a bit late for a dinner in most case? Another option we have always discussed is being out in a boat. It has always confused me as to where the boat tours actually take you. Do you get a great view from them?

Thanks again for all the hints. I know other appreciate them too as everyone tries to keep times in crowds as stress free as possible. :)

mousiemom, that is our favorite spot as well BUT you have to make sure to get a table that is smack dab right up against the rail as people WILL come and stand in front of you. I hang jackets on the railing even if the table is touching to discourage such. Small children are exceptions. They can hide out under the table and we all have a front row seat! :thumbsup2

This trip we have hopes of watching from the Rose and Crown as we have ADR's at the right time of day. We shall see if the Pixie Dust hits us or not. :confused3

Twende, so sorry you had that horrible experince. I felt my blood presure rise just reading it. I know how very frustrating that is. I understand why you didn't split up the group, but it does really sound like secturity was in order, and the cast member who refused to help out in a potentially volient situation should of been reported too. (really with the guy telling others to rob you! That is just insane.) He should of been more then kicked out of the park.

Anyway there are many good spots all over for Illulmnations. If we don't get there early we often just stand on the bride between France and England. The blacony at Japan is also good, any place up high like Candana is too as long as something doesn't obstuct your view (like the steps of Mexico, the CS resturant is in the way, but if you can get a set outside that is nice.)

Really just try to find an open spot as close to the fence as possible, but not under trees and you should be good. :thumbsup2

AllyCatTapia, get over yourself already. The point of mentioning the lanuage was she could understand him. Really. Isn't Spanish the 2nd most used lanuage in the US? How in the world could mentioning that be racist?

Hispanic is a more general term than Latina/Latino. Hispanic includes Spainards. Latino refers specifically to people from Latin America, but include Portugese speakers. Some Latinos find the term Hispanic to be offensive - its rather eurocentric in nature, some do not, some refer to themselves as Hispanic rather than Latino. My understanding is that here in the Midwest, Hispanic is still the preferred term by many (though not all) people of Latin American decent, I was recently at an event for recent Guatamaulan immigrants and they were using the word Hispanic.

I'm not Latina/Hispanic/Chicana/etc. I am the mother of a Korean/Asian/Asian-American/Oriental who has been in similar debates in the past and have learned that terms vary greatly by region and age.

By the way, we always stroll out from dinner around 8 or 8:30, wander around for a while, and grab a spot for Illuminations between dinner and the International Gateway as the show is starting. Its been fine.

We watched from Rose and Crown. You need to make adr's for 7pm if you want to try to get a good table to view from. Our adr's were for 7:30, couldn't get any earlier... but they do also have a roped off section for people dining and the view from there was good.
