Any Tips On Removing Grout?

We need to replace the grout where the tub meets the tile in one of the bathrooms. The husband said it was like cement. I haven't had a chance to try my luck at taking it out of there yet.

Is there something you can put on it to soften it up or can you just put new grout over the old stuff? Anyone who'd like to add their input, please do.

If there's anything out there that can soften grout, I've never seen it. Grout is basically tinted thinset cement. The only way to get it out of the grout lines is to use a grout saw or a manual grout removal tool (looks kinda like a screwdriver but with a triangular head on it), or you can use a Dremel attachment for removing grout. If it's wall tile with the reeeeeeally small grout lines and you use the Dremel attachment, be careful that you don't damage the tiles.

New grout doesn't adhere very well to old grout. Not only that, but there's bound to be a shade difference that would be noticeable. The best thing is to remove all of the old grout and replace it with new grout. Yeah, it's a long tedious process, but it would be the best and best looking solution.

Grout *is* cement, and there is no way to take it off except to chip it away. You wouldn't be speaking of the caulk, now would you? (The rubbery stuff used to seal the joints?)

If so, your answer is caulk remover, a chemical solvent paste. Put it on, wait a few hours, then scrape it off very easily.

Another vote for the Dremel here. (That thing's fun to use and easy to handle.)
