Any tips for easing the pain of strep throat?

I get it quite a bit and I'm finally going to have my tonsils out at age 33! YEAH! But believe it or not Rita's Mistos are the best they numb you throat for quite awhile...and being I'm usually in sooo much pain I cannot eat it takes the edge off too..give it a try. Certainly much yummer than any throat spray!

mep, I had my tonsils out at 18 and it hurt soooo much...get ice pops and DO NOT USE A STRAW for a while after. Good luck!

Hope you're feeling better soon, Michele.

Ice pops may help and also Lipton chicken soup with pastina cooked into it (with a dab of butter on top). (Soup with pastina--Italian sick food.)

OMG, aren't they just the best??? I had mango misto a few days ago and I also love the lemon mistos. We had them for the first time last summer when traveling. We liked them so much we ordered a couple more "for the road" and that was our dinner. We don't have one close to us here, but there are 2 about 1/2 hour from home. Worth the drive! And the custard is delicious, too.

gosh, the last time I had strep (age 26), the doctor gave me hydrocodone.

I do love that man....::yes::

Janice, pastina in chicken broth is my favorite when I'm sick...of course it works better when someone else makes it! lol

I don't know what a misto is! I better look this up.

It is rita's water ice w/ the custard mixed together in a shake. I usually get a large mango........especially when I have strep...I just take my time and sip on it. It really numbs my throat!

I had the worst throat infection once and the ENT gave me an RX for lidocaine. You use it as a gargle then spit it out. If you can get the anitbiotic and steroid shots that would serve you well. I get this junk every year and the shots are the only thing that get me on the road to recovery. I then have to follow up with orals (YUCK!)

luvwinnie,
You've gotten many good suggestions for pain relief here. I'm going in a different direction. DH is also on immunosuppresive medication and because of it is now very succeptible to strep. He has had several bouts with it over the years. He actually landed in the hospital and needed IV antibiotics to contain it a couple of weeks ago. He had a raging fever, sore throat and terrible body pain when he landed in the ER on a Friday night. They started taking a whole bunch of tests and we kept asking for a throat culture, knowing it was most likely strep. Sure enough. His doctor (who kind of fluffed off an upper respiratory infection about three weeks prior to his hospitalization) now wants DH to remind him that he's prone to strep ANY time he's feeling under the weather. BTW, he was taking Zithromax (DH is allergic to penicillin) prior to his hospitalization. Apparantly, it didn't do the trick. If you're still not feeling quite right after the 10 days of penicillin, push the issue with your doctor. Strep can be very serious when you're immunosupressed.

Hope you'll be feeling better very soon.

Depending on the person and the infection - yes they give you one (or two) shots and then you are done. Less than 48 hours and I was a new person. In the meantime is there a Sonic nearby and someone who can get you Lemon Slushes? They are not too sweet, hydrating (helps the headache) and feel great.
