Any Thoughts On Driving From CT?

We are making the trip down this Saturday, leaving from the western part of CT. We have been looking at several different routes and I was wondering if anyone who makes this trip has any input.

We are debating whether we should go straight down I-95 or I-84 to I-81 and then either picking up I-95 around D.C. or I-77 to eventually I-95.

We are trying to get as far down as possible the first day (SC or GA?) so we don't have as far to go on Sunday to reach Orlando.

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated!:)

We've had an ongoing discussion for the past week or so about driving from CT. I think I posted my route for you on the other thread.

I think the discussion starts around page 206 of this thread http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2507731&page=206

This is my route-

95 S
Exit 21 to Tappan Zee bridge/white plains
merge onto 287 West
Exit 15 onto 287
Exit 21B onto 78 West
Merge onto 81 south
Exit 81 merge onto 77 south
keep left at fork- 26 east
exit 169A onto 95 south

I had AAA make me a triptik with that route as well as the 95 (Tappan Zee bridge) route.

Hope this helps!

Yes we definitely had this discussion on one of the other boards! I showed my husband your route which is basically what we were thinking. I was at dinner tonight with a group of co-workers some of which make the trip down every year during the Winter and they were split between the 2 routes.

Have you done this route before? Some of the girls were saying tonight that part of the inland drive is not Interstate but an undivided highway that goes through towns with stoplights and such along the way. We were worried that might make that way a lot slower?

Any thoughts? We are so anxious to get there we want the shortest way possible!:yay:

I've only driven one other time- last summer. We took the 95 route (but going around NYC on the Tappan Zee bridge to 287) and it took a total of 21 hours on the road- not counting stops for gas/dinner etc. We did it over 3 days.

I wanted to go that route again and was going to leave around 3 or 4 but even so people on this thread recommended the inland route or an even earlier departure time due to beach traffic and construction in DC.

It looks like it's about 100 miles longer than 95. Hopefully that time will be made up by avoiding traffic.

Good luck! I can't wait to leave! Maybe we'll see you on the road!

We drive from CT on the Rhode Island border every year. I highly recommend leaving earlier and trying to get through the major cities before rush hour. We go 95 the entire way and usually have no problems with traffic on the way down. We try to stop in Savannah or as close as we can get the first night. That gets us in Disney around 12 or 1.

Now the ride home..........that's another story. No way to avoid NY, NJ, DC traffic. It usually takes at least an hour or two longer to get home.

Good Luck and have a safe trip. We'll be heading down the week after you.

Thanks for the tips! We are hoping to leave around 4 also. Hoping we miss TS Emily

Wishing you all a safe drive down and a great trip at Disney!:thumbsup2

There is a similar thread recently started, about driving from Easton to Brunswick, GA. I've posted some details there that may be of interest to you.

As for the inland route, I know of no section between the Tappan Zee and Orlando that involves towns and stoplights. We drive from NC to MA at least once per year, and NC to FL the same amount, and I can't think of where they are talking about. They may be thinking of another route, or having been detoured somewhere on a past drive.

I-95 is shorter, but inland has tons fewer tolls both ways, and you don't have to constantly start/stop at toll booths (except the one on the PA/NJ line, when heading down to FL). Inland also takes the big cities out of play (except Charlotte, NC), for those who can't leave early enough to get ahead of traffic. Having driven to MA both ways, we find the inland route to be a much better drive with less possible headaches.

May I suggest making a reservation no matter what route you decide to go?
I know of several people who decided to wing it and ended up driving longer then planned becos they couldn't get a room. When we drove we'd make reservations between Walterboro SC and the GA border. We would get up and on the road around 5:30 -6:00.That got us to WDW by lunch time
