Any teachers have NTA disability insurance?

I just signed up for National Teachers Associates' disability insurance. It covers only accidents and surgeries so (for example) if I have a regular birth with vettechicklet2 it won't cover me being out. But if I have a c-section it will.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has this insurance and ever collected on it.

Thanks!

Don't waste your money on specific illness policies like this. Generally they are VERY specific on what they will really cover. It sounds like an AFLAC plan or something similar.

Do you have the option to take a short term disability policy at school? If so, this will pay for your maternity leave, regular or C-section. If not, you could look into a private plan for that but private short term disability plans are fairly expensive for what you get out of them. If you don't already, make sure you get a supplemental LONG term disability plan as a work plan comes with taxable benefits and you don't really get 60% like the plan says because that benefit is taxed.

Congratulations on #2--I just noticed your signature-I thought this was hypothetical.

I had the short-term disability plan for DD and in the end it was a wash for what I put in vs. got out. I did not renew. This new plan only covers major incidents, not plain ol' maternity leave, and since I already know I'm having a c-section with this second one, I should be covered as long as I'm out of school.

But I agree, I never would have bought this plan without knowing I was going to have major surgery this summer. :)

Just wondering if anyone had any experience with these guys!

Read through the policy VERY carefully. My guess is that there is either an exclusion for C-Sections OR you have to have the policy for so many months before it pays out. That is typically how these plans work. Who is the plan through-which insurance company?

I am looking on the NTA website--is the plan the actual disability plan or the hospital indemnity plan (or something else maybe)?

He told me that c-sections were covered and there was no waiting period. I did read in the paperwork though that you can't have the condition before you sign up for the policy, but that is not my case. I don't have a condition, it's just a choice. So he said I should be covered.

It should be the disability plan.

Ok, if it is this plan: http://www.ntalife.com/Disability.html

it is what is called an indemnity plan. That means it reimburses you for expenses not covered by your medical plan-copays, etc. It will not cover your "income". Now, if is something different than this, it might be ok. I just hate to see you put money into something that really isn't what they say it is. I also hate to say but pregnancy as defined by insurance companies is a condition and you may very well not get anything.
