My daughter & I are taking a break from our annual WDW trip to go to New York this year. We're staying near Carnegie Hall but will have a metro card & don't have a problem taking a cab.

Does anyone have any suggestions on good places to eat?

We're looking for somewhere to get a good steak (but we don't want to break the bank, some places are outrageously expensive), we'd like some authentic Italian food (like chicken parm), we're going to try s'mac. We'd also like some New York pizza.

TIA

Randy's list
Restaurants – all near the theater district.

Junior’s Deli – huge theater deli 2 blocks from hotel. Everything menu; open late. GREAT cheesecake.

Taboon – 10th street between 52nd and 53rd. REALLY good Greek / Mediterranean food. Special baked break with feta/jalepeno/onions. AMAZING.

Delta Grill – 9th Ave at 48th. Really good southern/Cajun food. Great Sunday brunch.

Eatery – 9th between 52nd & 53rd. Good American eatery. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner – late night.

Viv – REALLY good Thai food. One block from Bare. 9th Street, between 48th and 49th.

Churrascaria – incredible Brazillian Steakhouse where they walk around with 20 different kinds of meat (some you may never have tried) on skewers and they slice to order. One price for all you can eat. Super yummy (but only if you’re big meat eaters!). Hint: don’t get full on the salad bar (which is amazing—but it’s all about the meat). 49th St between 8th and 9th. Across the street from the Bare stage door.

5 Napkin Burger – total hot spot for theater professionals and AMAZING burgers (although I love the fish tacos!). Last time I was there I sat across from Jason Robert Brown. Really great for lunch or dinner. 9th street between 44th and 45th

Shmackerie’s – located around the corner from 5 Napking – incredible specialty cookie store – things like s’mores cooking; banana peanut-butter cookies, chai-latte cookies… totally fab.

Chelsea Grill – just an easy going grill to go get pub food. On 9th between 46th and 47th)

Vynl – very hip place for gourmet diner food. Great bar/drinks. Always fun music/crowd, fun vibe. 9th between 50th and 51st.

Carmine’s – Famous Broadway family style Italian restaurant – everything is BIG and yummy and garlicky. 44th between Broadway and 8th.

Sosa Barella – Argentinean/Italian. It’s like Italian with interesting flavors. Went there a few times. 8th between 50th and 51st.

Shake Shack - amazing burgers and shakes! There’s a few – I think the closest is on 8th between 44th and 45th. (Or maybe 43 and 44th)

Tony DiNapoli best italian food in NYC it's served family style and in times sq

Great steak is outrageously expensive. Check the websites, and get on the email address, for places like http://www.ruthschris.com/ http://www.thepalm.com/ http://www.donshula.com/ http://www.mortons.com/ etc. They'll sometimes have a promotional deal for a price fixed menu. It will still cost around $100 for two (+tip +tax + tip)

edited to add an example

^^^This. Perfect. Our fav's --Katz, Carmine's (try the calamari), Juniors & 5 Napkin. Have fun!

In the East Village/Lower East Side area, there is a small restaurant called the Clinton Street Baking Company. It's a breakfast/brunch eats, but having pancakes and mimosas in the early hours will only enhance your life...

We had a great pizza at Patzeria...it was small and had a local feel. The owner was super friendly and we had an awesome meal there! We had teens with us and they loved Ellen's Stardust Diner...food was decent but the teens loved the singing wait staff.

We had great pizza at Johnny's pizzeria right near Times Square at
260 W 44th St. From the outside you would never know that it was a beautiful old church with a huge dome of stain glass in the back. Very popular and gets very busy. Go early if you can.

Another vote for Carmine's. We live about 40 minutes from Manhattan and that's the only restaurant that makes us willing to travel to Manhattan to eat by itself.

If you like great steak, also try Wolfgangs.

I second the Five Napkin Burger responses!! So good :)

Also, my mom and I usually LOVE this French restaurant called Cafe 123. They have a 3 course menu thingy for a pretty decent price. And their Chicken Cordon Bleu is really good.

If you're looking for a fun "experience", Jekyll and Hyde's restaurant has an awesome theme to it. The food is generic American (burgers, etc) but its got a great atmosphere!

Have fun! :)

Gyu- Kaku is by far my favorite restaurant in the city. I go for lunch all the time, but their dinner prices are ok too. It's Korean style Japanese BBQ. In the middle of your table there is a small grill and you get to cook your own food. It's a lot of fun for a group or a couple. At lunch time, they offer a lunch set for $10 with three kinds of meat, soup, salad and rice. Definitely the best food in Times Square for that reasonable a price. Dinner can get pricey, but if you order al carte, it's still reasonable. It's located at 44th and Eighth. There are other locations within the city, google them.
I would also recommend Macbar on Prince St (just north of Little Italy). It is a restaurant that serves just Mac and Cheese, but many different varieties.

RubyFoos is a great place in Times Square for asian food. It's a mix of chinese, japanese, thai and a few others.

If you plan on doing Broadway, there is a really economic way of doing it. Up to two hours before show time, you can go into any box office and ask if there are any rush seats available. Most shows will sell any unsold seats right before showtime for a severely reduced rate. I've sat in the orchestra for many different plays, never for more than $40, usually less. This is a bit of a gamble and you can't be as particular though. The more popular shows will either be sold out or not offer rush. For example, Wicked does not have rush (but the do offer a ticket lottery 2 hours before).

I think Tony's is much better than Carmine's. Plus I find Tony's portions are a little smaller which is more suitable for smaller groups or if a group wants a little more variety of food items.

eataly, eataly, eataly.

trust me. eataly. PM me anytime. living here for 20 years.

i'm a New Yorker (live 40 miles north of NYC) and I'm of Italian heritage...

1) do NOT go to any restaurants in Little Italy- they are all a major rip off....the only halfway decent one is Puglia's on Hester Street...

2) if you go down to Chinatown Wo-Hop on Mott Street is a must- one of the best Chinese restaurants in NYC....

3) Carmine's restaurant on 44th street, which serves Italian food family style (aka- really huge dishes) is really good)...

4) some of the best eateries are Irish pubs- try and get ones off the beaten path...if you go to the one's near Times Square you will get ripped off....

5) Sofia's restaurant in the Edison Hotel (46th Street) does not get rave reviews as its an older place but I've gone there for years and have never had a bad meal...its reasonably priced as well (get the pasta bows in mushroom sauce)....

6) if you are down in the financial district Dean's (349 Greenwich St) is very good...was there last Thursday...had the spaghetti w/sausage and peppers...

pizza is hit or miss...it all depends on what you're use to...

are you referring to Katz's on Houston (pronounced house-ton) Street???

here's a little tip- my dad, who was NYPD for 23 years gave it to me....they give you, or at least used to give you, little green tickets to mark what you were eating....you give the guy who prepared your sandwich the ticket, he made your sandwich, then marked the ticket....

fold up a dollar real small (it used to be a quarter) stash it behind the ticket and reach over to give the guy the ticket with the dollar...all of a sudden your three pieces of pastrami sandwich becomes a sandwich with three inches of pastrami!!!

finally- as far as steakhouse Gallagher's is a longtime favorite in NYC (52nd street)...i've not been there for years but its always been good...

If you are looking for an Irish bar/restaurant I recommend Jameson's Bar Restaurant on 2nd Ave between 51st and 52nd Streets.
