Any reason to keep a 50 point contract?

Hi everyone!

I have a 50 point contract at Vero Beach (that is the only dvc contract I have).

I am thinking about selling it. I only stay at WDW. A weeks stay (I like a 1br) involves 3 years of points (banking, current year, and borrowing). And it's not even a full week with higher weekend costs. It seems like 7 month booking is harder to get and for the small amount of points I have it is a lot of effort.

I love being on property but I can much easier and cheaper book a 1 br off property.

Am I missing anything - why would this be worth keeping? Resale prices are high so this would be a good time to sell.

I think I'm only torn because of the emotional attachment...

Thoughts?

Does your 50 point contract give you Member benefits that you might miss after the sale? That is, if you've owned this contract for a long while, or at least before April 2016, are you using and enjoying the Member perks such as discounted WDW Annual Passes, invitations to Member Events, etc.?

Going to the Member Lounge at Epcot?
I would not want to go to WDW and stay off property, but if that suits you, sell!

Well, I do love staying in property. But the cost differential is huge. I've found a place I like that you can usually get a one bedroom for around $125 night and is very nice.

I think the problem is I just don't have enough points to make my contract more fulfilling.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Good points! Are annual pass discounts no longer available to reseller? I've had my contact for 10 years so wasn't an issue.

There were two big "splits" in how "direct" vs "resale" points honored. The first in 2011 and the next in 2016. As you've owned your points for 10 years, you are grandfathered as "direct" regardless of how you obtained that contract.
  • 2011: Resale points no longer quality to book Concierge Collection or Disney Collection.
2016: Most "member perks" are now offered only to Direct (or grandfathered) account holders under the new program "Member Extras." Member Extras, while not guaranteed, currently offers a discount on Annual Passes (WDW and DL), a discount on multi-day WDW passes, the occasional Member Event (Water Parks, WDW Theme Park night and DL Theme Park night), access to the Member Lounge in Epcot, etc.
Personally, I'd hold on to the 50pt contract and find a way to use it ... unless it is a financial burden.

50 points at VB are worth about $70pp or $3,500 total
50 VB points have annual dues of $8.10pp or $400 per year

At these numbers does it make sense to own for you?
What would you do with $3,500 if you sell?
What can you do with $400 per year in dues savings?

Renting VB for $14pp (minus $8.10 dues) gets you around $300 per year in profit if you rent all 50 points

If you are using the DVC member benefits (some people love those features) then it is worth keeping, but if not, then it may be better to sell and just rent where you want to stay.

DVC timeshares are best if you use them for your own vacation at DVC resorts.

If you can rent them I would do that to keep the benefits. You'll make a small profit plus still get all the discounts.

I bought this about 10 years ago and wish I would have bought at a WDW resort.

I have 50 banked points and 50 current year points so was hoping could sell for more than $70 pp.

I was aware of the 2011 split but not the 2016 change.

With a 50 point you maybe able to get more. The small contracts generally bring a premium. If you really want to sell contact a resale company and see what your options are.

Not an owner here but maybe in the future...

If you think you may find a use for it I would just rent out the points as stated earlier, that's actually a pretty good profit for the small amount invested.

Good point. I've never rented before, do you think people are generally able to rent their entire allotment of points? I currently have 100 (50 banked and 50 current year).

Take a look at the posts in rent/trade, I don't think you'll have an issue at all renting out all your points.

If you plan to stay off site and not use them at all, I'd likely sell. If you think you might ever buy in, I'd keep them and either try to use them at times or just rent them out until you see how it goes with the other options.
