Any Pittsburghers here?

To the Op, just read more of your posts, looks like schools aren't an issue and you would be best along the T line...there are so many choices...From Beechview, Brookline, Mount Lebanon, Castle Shannon, Bethel Park, South Park...I am sure I am forgetting a few...LOL

Excuse me, as a former resident of Beechview and a current resident of Brookline, I'm here to say that Fiori's is in Brookline - it's on the wrong side of West Liberty Avenue to be in Beechview.

An unsolicited rant. Sorry.
I stand corrected.

Beechview also has one of my favorite pizza spots in Pittsburgh - Fiori's, second only to Mineo's in Squirrel Hill.

OHHHHH, bring me back to great pizza days! There is no good pizza down here. Anybody old enough to remember the Mineos in Dormont back in the 70s?

Oh and you have to learn to love the Steelers...seriously. ;)

That's going to be one of the hardest things to do, after a decade in SF following the '49ers and 13 years back here in Viking territory!

OK, I jumped on a cheap airfare sale, so I'll be in Pgh 9/14-9/19. Hope to see some of the sights, go to some open houses, get a little feel for the city, and see what comes next! Meanwhile, any suggestions of a good, economical place to stay near downtown or at least centrally located close to transit? Also, anybody have any realtors they would recommend?
There is a Holiday Inn (Express I believe) near the 10th St bridge on South Side. It's very close to public transit and the downtown area and was a nice place.

Dh is originally from Pittsburgh. Neville Island, to be exact. Is anybody familiar with the Island?

I lived in Robinson Township until I was 10yrs old. Moved to TX in 74'. We always had school skating parties at the rink in Neville Island. Wow thought name sure brought back memories from way back .

Thanks; I checked that out but it was a bit out of my $$ range. I got a room at the Crowne Plaza at South Hills Village, at the south end of the T line. Got a good deal, and I'll be handy to the T to visit the neighborhoods we are looking at for open houses etc. and can get downtown easily too. I'll probably buy a 1-week 2 zone PAT ticket. Anybody know if I can buy them at the airport, or on the 28x airport bus?

I visited the Island twice. When dh said he had a river in his backyard when growing up, he wasn't kidding.

I will ask my DH about buying the PAT transit tickets. He uses the "T" to go to work everyday. I know you will probably not be able to buy them on the bus(28x airport bus). The Crowne Plaza at South Hills Village will be a great area for you to stay at. Right outside in the front of the hotel is a AAA office. So that will be a convenient place to get information. Also I think there is a Howard Hanna Realtor office next door too. South Hills Village Mall is right across the street

Found a place to buy a PAT Transit pass near your hotel. It is a regional grocery store called Giant Eagle. It is walking distance from the hotel if weather is good. Call the store just to make sure they have the weekly pass for PAT.

That particular Giant Eagle (or Gi'nt Iggle, as a native might say) is one of the "special" Giant Eagles in the area - it's one of the biggest supermarkets you'll ever see, and it carries everything. They always have Pat Transit passes. Make sure, if you buy one, that you a) buy the weekly pass, and not the book of tickets, and b) you buy a two zone pass. Bethel Park is two zones away from downtown (or dahn tahn, as a yinzer might put it).

The store, btw, is 24 hours, but Customer Service, where you get that pass, closes down around 10pm.

Wow, man. Talking about Giant Eagle on the DISboards.

Oh, it's on Oxford Drive. You might be able to walk around behind the parking lot to get there. If you can't, go out the front, turn left on Fort Couch Road, and turn left again on Oxford Drive. You can't miss it.

Hey, for all I know, we've passed each other plenty of times. I'm the one in the Mickey Mouse Club t-shirt.

LOL, yes that Giant Eagle is a Market Place GE...very nice store.

It is sort of weird talking about GE here, LOL :teeth:

There is also a movie theater that is right in front of the hotel (in the mall parking lot). Oh and a 24 hr Walgreens right down the road. (LOL, I think all Walgreens are 24 hr)

Hey, thanks a lot guys! :thumbsup2 One more question (just want to make sure): the weekly pass is good for 7 days from day first used, or day bought, or is it a calendar week (Sunday-Saturday)?
