Any penatly for canceling reservations?

We just planned a trip for mid-June, but we haven't nailed down all our details yet. We may or may not have other family members joining us.

I would like to try to book a few dining experiences for my family, but I am still not sure how many will be in our party.

Can i book for the 5 people in my immediate family, and then change/cancel reservations if other family members opt to join us. I know we may not get reservations (especially since we are 4 months out).

I was online last night and several of our choices are available now. Is there any penalty for canceling a reservation? I'd be canceling long before we actually get to FL.

The only restaurants that you have to use a CC to hold or pay in advance (like CRT, HDDR) do you pay a penalty if you don't show up or cancel within the "timeframe"....I believe is 24-48hours.

All other places you just cancel and rebook them if you can, no penalty.

Make reservations for the largest number of people you think might attend. Then, when you know, you can either call and adjust the reservation down (recommended for pre-paid reservations or those with a no-show fee) or you can show up with fewer people. If you go the cancellation route, you may not be able to rebook the reservation for a smaller party at the time you want.

It is much easier to adjust a reservation to subtract people than it is to add them.

Thank you for the info - and the good suggestions. I may try to get a few meals reserved for the whole party, and if they end up not joining us, I can scale them down for just my immediate family.
