I have a 6 month old wonderful baby girl that I am nursing and plan to be nursing for another 6 months. Anyone else out there nursing? It makes dieting much harder - for me anyway - since I still have to make sure I eat enough to keep my milk supply up. I would love to hear how others do it. I did SBD for a week and lost 7 pounds - but I knew that was too much so instead of modifying it then I quit it. The good news is I have kept that 7 pounds off (more or less - I fluctuate about 2 pounds regularly). Just wanting to know if there were any been there done that moms with any advice.

Thanks!
Amanda

Hi- I am still nursing DS (15 mos) getting ready to ween soon. WW has a great program for nursing moms that I heard about from a fellow DIS WISHer.
I have been on the WISH board for 2.5 weeks and lost 8 pounds so far.
Are you sleeping well? I couldn't stay on any program when I was sleep deprived. Things are getting better now so I think this is it- I am finally going to shed that baby fat.
These boards are a great source of information and support.
good luck and congratulations-
Mary

My wife and I just had a son in January. A short while later, we joined weight watchers and as the poster above mentioned, they seem to have a good program. My wife has been on it for about 1 month, she get's essentially 10 extra points just for nursing, but she has already lost 10 lbs! She doesn't have the opportunity to excercise that much. Most of her activity is literally chasing after our 3 yr old. I have lost over 10lbs also, but I am kind of irrelevant in respect to this conversation :-)

I am nursing my 14 month old DD and I understand your problem well. I actually didn't start any kind of a "diet" until after DD was 1yo because I didn't want to jeopardize her nutrition and I didn't feel comfortable with any of the plans I had found. Probably much as you felt after trying SBD.

Towards the end, I heard about the WW plan for nursing mothers, and I may have tried it if I had found out about it earlier. Instead, I focused on healthy eating and exercising. I ended up losing 10 pounds in about 5 months. It wasn't a lot, but it was a good jumping off point for me. After DD turned 1, began more of a traditional "diet" since my milk is just supplemental for her and no longer her primary food source.

My best advice would be to talk to your doctor before starting any paricular diet. My personal opinion would also be to opt for a diet that doesn't limit certain food groups (i.e. carbs). I personally felt that I should be eating a balanced diet so that DD was getting a well-rounded diet as well.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

I am nursing my 12 week old (I plan to nurse him for the whole first year) and I do WW for nursing moms. It is the BEST!! I gained almost 45 lbs with this pregnancy and I now weigh 10 pounds less than my PRE-preg weight.

If you have any questions about the program I will gladly try to answer them:D

I am in England and I have been following WW since my baby was 12 weeks old. While nursing I was allowed 30 points a day instead of 20. That is a lot of points and I ate out regularly. I breast fed my baby until she was 6 months old.

She is 11 months old now and I have lost 32lb since joining WW. I had lost some before joining so I have now lost the entire 56lb (eek) I gained during pregnancy. I am now the same weight as on my wedding day at Disney's Wedding Pavilion in 2001!!!!!!!!!!

I believe WW is great for nursing mums and I am sooooooooo pleased I joined when I did. You will still eat plenty for you and the baby to be healthy but you will lose weight too.

Join soon, you wont regret it!!!
Good luck!!!

mrsminniemouse is absolutely correct! WW is not what I'd call a diet. I'd say it is a guide to healthier eating.

I just ventured over to this board, and I want to say that I think it's great that many of you are nursing past the 1 year mark! I nursed all 3 of mine into their second year, and all my friends think I'm nuts. I have to say my kids have been very healthy, often having perfect attendance at school, but my youngest has been weaned 6 years and I still have 45 pounds to lose. So congratulations and good luck with shedding those pounds.

Thanks everyone! I think I will have a friend of mine who attends meetings pick up that materials for me. It just doesn't fit into the budget to join meetings right now. And I know it's crazy but if you say you're a nursing mom they won't let you join online and I can't bear the thought of lying and then showing that I'm eating 10 points more than I'm supposed to every day:D

Not that I usually encourage lying, but that is what I did to join online. But, it never looks like I ate 10 extra points everyday. I just put nursing in as exercise points everyday :-) I understand not wanting to lie! Once you get the info, if you have any questions ask away!
