Any other families planning for a furlough?

I think the above poster stating "de-certifed for AUO and FLSA" in addition to one day off with pay every 2 weeks = 40% less pay. You have to adjust for the de-certifed for AUO and FLSA which reduces your salary significantly. Wow! Not good.

Yes Thank you! This is exactly what I was trying to say. I was really holding out hope that something would have been signed yesterday avoiding furlough. It will be a huge adjustment but we'll survive. I told dh last night that we once lived off of the lower amount and we can do it again. It's just going to be rough for awhile while we adjust to it.

We're definitely keeping internet. I'll need it for my job hunt!

It's just hard to know how real this thing is. We already live frugally, we have an emergency fund etc., but as to whether this will be a non-existent, temporary, or permanent squeeze, it would be nice to know!

IMHO this furlough is going to non-existent for government employees. It won't even start for almost two more months. By then they will have a budget. This is why congress did not push to get anything by 3/1.

Hopefully the budget they do pass addresses the overspending but I do not hold out much faith in that it will. Eventually some people will lose their jobs due to the elimination of programs, grants and the like.

The big problem occurs in May when the debt ceiling is hit again.

When you have 5 year olds on both sides of the aisle that aren't give an inch, this is what you get! Both sides are sitting and pouting right now.

Has anyone actually received any furlough letters yet? We were told we are required to get 30 days notice, so no actual furlough until April.

I've heard that the letters will go out on 3/6 or 3/7. I know what you mean, big babies. Would it have been so freaking bad if both sides met halfway at least? gesh!! LOL

Both sides are so entrenched that there will be no compromise because that word is not in their vocabulary... and I mean that for both sides.

Trying to stay non-political, one if the individuals (see, not stating which side :lmao:), when asked about getting a deal said the other side can talk to us and when they move from their point, we an talk.... not we can both move from our point and talk.

This is why we are where we are.

I figure give it a few weeks, when air traffic starts to shut down some of the smaller airports and some of the congress folks can't get home..... that might finally get their attention. What happens to us they don't care about. When it gets in their way, they will take notice and do something! Sad, but that's what it's come to.

What happened to them representing US and looking out for OUR well-being?

Sorry.... kind of lit my fuse this morning!

I would get rid of the gym membership and the newspaper but I would keep at least basic cable and definitely the internet. You need some type of entertainment.

Disagree. I got rid of cable n home phone about 1.5 yrs ago cause they my triple provider raised cable/int/ and home phone 10$ a piece. No regrets. Have ohma for 8$ a month n it works great. I also have Netflix n amazon prime. At 8$ for cable we miss nothing. We hook our lap top to the tv for survivor, and dh watches a show or 2 online. we miss nothing.

I look at it like this. A game of checkers is in progress. One side has made its move. Waiting for the other side to make a move. Cant have a game of checkers if one side refuses to make a move. So still waiting for the other side to make its move. Unfortunately, the move doesnt have a time limit

Just because it got me curious- What are AUO and FLSA?
I felt bad reading it would drop pay by 40%, but now I can't stop wondering what the heck it even stands for.

AUO = availability pay for law enforcement (they don't get paid overtime, and instead get a blanket % added to their pay). if they don't meet a certain number of hours, they lose it.

AUO is Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime and FLSA is the Fair Labor Standards Act. Availability pay is considered AUO because due to the nature of their work, some Federal law enforcement officers are required to work, or be available to work, substantial amounts of "unscheduled duty.

Well, it's easy to be stubborn when you are not affected by any of your decisions.

Not really feasible - I can do some programming on my own but I'm not going back to school for 4 years for CompSci. Completely different fields.

Not really, I've been in IT for over 17 years and very few in the field actually have an IT related degree.

I couldn't have explained it any better. My dh works 10 hrs everyday, five days a week. Except for today of course. He's right now working on his 11th hour on duty because he and his partners caught a load of drugs right as his shift was ending and now has to stay and process the drugs and the smuggler. Fun times for all!

At our location Furlough letters came out last Friday....nothing on Contractors yet but speculation is they will receive same cuts...lawyers are involved to make sure that is within the rights of the contracts.

Scary job!! You both have my utmost respect.

We haven't gotten our letters. As to our contractors, because of the continuing resolution (CR) we can't fund our contracts past March 27... consequently, their contract stops then unless the CR gets pushed out. Sounds like it will be because if congress doesn't so something, the government goes from doing 80% of their job to 0% of their job.

....and...

I have been told to tell my contractors as much as management has told me..... NOTHING!!!!! :confused3 Management isn't saying anything right now which only fuels the fire of anger and depression. No way to take care of the troops.... but I guess it's obvious they just don't care.

I asked my husband if he has heard anything yet and he hasn't. I'm sure his employees are ready to know something too. I'm still upset about this, but what do you do?

I just feel so bad for the people who it will hit he hardest. While it will hurt us, we should be fine because we only owe on our home, thank goodness.

We were planning a trip to Disney in June but that's not going to happen. I'm also not going to cheer camp with my daughter his year, which is at the beach and a part of our summer vacation. This summer will stink!

It's funny how much this response made that answer make sense. I was sitting here trying to figure out how they have uncontrollable overtime... it sounded like some strange term for just over scheduling people and not taking responsibility.
So losing AUO would mean that he would have to stay to process all this crap, but then wouldn't get paid past his limit for the day - so pay would stop at 8 or 10 or however many hours even if he was there 12?
