Elaine,
I unfortunately am a m/c veteran and would never say anything to give you false hope. At this point, I think that you should remain optimistic. The fact that your hpt's are lighter/darker really doesn't mean anything. Each test has a different amount of dye - even tests within the same pack. Really, they are designed to tell you IF you are pregnant or not...not HOW pregnant you are. So don't let that concern you.
I have had brown spotting with ALL of my pregnancies. The difference with my m/c's is that it was accompanied by sort of painful cramps and a sudden loss of pregnancy symptoms. The thing is - symptoms come and go anyway, AND you are pretty early on to be having symptoms anyway, sooo..
At this point, I would concentrate on the fact that your bloodwork looks good. Will they do another beta 48 hours after the first? The fact that your levels look good is a VERY GOOD sign, but to get a complete picture they should take another beta 48 hours after the first to see if the numbers are doubling.
I hope that everything is okay. It sounds like you have a great doctor (and nurse) and I am glad that they are taking you seriously.
Please stay positive - I am thinking good thoughts for you!
