Earthwatch is basically a pay-to-volunteer program. You pay a couple thousand dollars (plus your airfare to the location) for the program and they send you to help out with a research team somewhere out in the field doing the grunt work and such.
It's pretty expensive, but a lot of people who don't want to make science a full time career, but have a strong interest in it nevertheless (and plenty of disposable income), find it a good way to get involved.
