Any one used the Unity Sand?

My fiance and I wanted to use a unity candle, but we are worried about the wind at the Yacht Club. Wouldn't want the candle to go out mid-ceremony! So I just saw the idea of the unity sand. If anyone hasn't heard of this, it is a similar concept to the candle. There are three vases (two small and one larger). Mine would have one colour sand (ie. white) and his would have another (ie. black). At the beginning of the ceremony, I would pour a little bit of the white in the bottom, followed by the groom pouring a little bit of black. Once the ceremony has ended, we each pour our colours in at once. It seemed like a cool idea. Here's a picture of one I found on e-bay:

Afterwards the smaller vases can be used for flowers. When we were going to do the candles, we were going to have our Mothers light the individual ones. I thought a cool idea would be for each of them to have the respective sand in a cloth bag and at the beginning of the ceremony they would each pour the sand into the respective smaller vases. What does everyone think? We would probably use white and another colour, but this is kind of a cool idea.

I personally think that sounds like a really cool (and pretty) idea!! Especially for an outdoor ceremony where a candle might blow out.

I saw this on a TLC beach wedding, maybe on For Better or Worse? It was really cool to see, you could then seal it and take it home I wonder if you used a sand art type sand if you could get it to stay layered?

My sister just did this for her beach wedding in August. Since they both had been married with children previously, their individual containers of sand were layered with different colors to represent the different turns and choices they had made in their lives. When they joined their different colored sand, it was beautiful to see the colors blends and it also represented the blending of the different parts of their lives, including children to previous relationships.

What a neat idea! DH and I had a unity candle when we married 17 years ago. Long story short - I forgot to pre-light the candle before the ceremony so when we lit it, the flame struggled for a few seconds and then went out. Then the wick fell over in the wax. DH had to use his fingers to stand the wick back up and then we relit it. So much for unity! But we're still happily married 17 years later.

What a great idea!!

Though for the wind.. my floral coordinator suggested to us using the "hurrican globes" that will protect the flame from being blown out (so she says), I am renting them for $15.00. But really, the sand unity sounds just lovely :)

My step son & fiance had a ceremony outdoors in Chicago -- the WINDY city -- they used glass hurricane globes to shield the candles. Worked very well.

one of my friends used the sand unity ceremony at her beach wedding, i think its a nice alternative.

were actually sticking with the unity candle but having hurricane lamps around them so they wont blow out for our yc wedding.

Silly question warning....what do the people having beach weddings put the vases on? Do they take a small table with them? I would love to do this, but have no idea what we would put the vases on in the middle of Leu Gardens! I just don't think we feel like taking a table with us! (It's only the two of us at the wedding) I guess they probably have someone set a table up for them...
