We have booked it for next August after upgrading from PORS! Is it a good place to stay? I have a daughter who will be 5 and she loves animals so I hope she will love it there.
I have not told her yet we are going to WDW yet!

Yes it really wonderful, particularly for smaller children. To wake up and see Girafes grazing outside the window is a real treat for them. Try to get a Savanna view.

It's a great hotel with fantastic theming. Try and get a Savannah view room to make the most of the animals. But if not, there are plenty of viewing points and lookouts to see the animals.

This was our view in 2003:

Boma is a great buffet restaurant giving you the oppurtunity to try some Africa themed food, as well as more traditional fare for the less adventurous.
There is also a small food court as well.

Make sure you buy the refillable mugs from the food court. It will save you a small fortune in drinks over the length of your stay.

Also look out for the special events at the resort like the African story telling around the firepit.
The CMs are really friendly and love to tell you all about the animals etc.

Loved this place so much I didn't want to go to the parks :sunny: We got a complimentary upgrade to savannah view.

We have booked a standard room at AKL as we had a nightmare just booking the room in the first place. Is it worth trying to upgrade to a Savannah view room or trying to do it when we get there?

shagster - I would wait. people are often upgraded (free) anyway as there are not that many standard view rooms. If you don;t get upgraded for free you could always ask then how much it would cost :)

wideeyes - we stayed here last August and we absolutely loved it. Some report they find the decor dark, but we found it atmospheric and calming. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a savannah view room :thumbsup2 and my DDs (ages 6 and 9 at the time) loved to tick off the animals listed on the free guide :)

DDs loved the zero entry pool and slide :thumbsup2

There is lots to see and do at AKL.

hi :wave2: Thank you for your replies. I am really looking forward to staying there..I am sure my dd will love it especially as she is a big Lion King fan.

I have not booked a Savannah room however I will try and get a upgrade when we are there.

We too booked a standard room and ended up with a savannah room. I  the AKL, but being cheap as I am, don't think I could spend the extra $$$$ (of which there are many of them!) on an upgrade.

Have a wonderful trip, whatever you decide!

We stayed there last year and loved it splashed out on Concierge so that we could do the Sunrise safari which was excellent, I am sure you will love it :)

We stayed there the year it opened

I loved the hotel and theming. I have seen people comment that the rooms are too dark ie they have a lot of dark wood furniture, but I disagree.

The restauants, Jiko & Boma are in my opinion some of the best on wdw, so try and eat there if you can!

:thumbsup2

Hi :wave2: I have had a look a the some pictures of the AKL and out of all of the hotels i think it is the one that will most appeal to dbf.. I think he will love it. He is not a big disney fan and the hotel is more important to him than the parks. I think the interior looks fine.

I will definitely be eating at the restaurants.

We will be going to the AKL for christmas 06. As we have already booked a savannah veiw can anyone tell me of the benefits to be had with a concierge? :sunny:

Couldn't agree more.

It's our favourite Disney resort. We will definitely be returning there next trip.

We had a Savannah view room and it was worth every penny. No matter what time day or night I looked out of our balcony there was always some creatures roaming around. The theming is just superb, from the pool and the little stream that runs down to it, to the decor and artefacts on each floor.

Enjoy your stay :cool1:

We have stayed at AKL twice and have been upgraded to a savanah both times our boys (7&4) love this hotel :thumbsup2

I love AKL. I have stayed there twice and again in 117 days (I'm so excited). We have not been able to afford savannah rooms (we always have 2 connecting rooms so it means double the price) and have never been given a free upgrade (really hope we do this year) but even if u don't have a savannah room there are plenty of places to watch the animals. I agree that in reviews most people seem to moan about the low lighting but that is one of the things i like best about the hotel - It is so relaxing after a hot hectic day at the parks. I also love the shop, Boma, Mara and the pool.
