Any one recieve the Pell grant for the Fall??

Well I don't think he needs my assistance either. But I do go with him to the campus when he's in class. It's in a nice neighborhood, and I go for a walk or sit on the swing in the playground. Other than standing there, I don't think I'd be of much use either. I wasn't meaning it in the literal sense. More of that's on the agenda come Monday.

Oh, I see what you're saying. They probably wouldn't talk to you about it anyway, would they? I know colleges have a lot of privacy rules.

Can you get a Pell grant for grad school? I got screwed in undergrad....nada! And no help from the rents...blah. I'd love to go back to school but don't want a ton of debt.

No, Pell grants are strictly for undergraduates.

Often times there's scholarships for specific degrees. Or programs that will pay off your student loans as long as you work in that field for a specific time.

Like back in Florida, if you agree to teach in Florida for 5yrs after graduating, they'll pay off your student loans.

Or find a job that offers good benefits that include tuition assistance. I know for the Home Depot, you only have to work part time to qualify for it. And most jobs are usually willing to work around college classes, even for full time employees that are supposed to have full availability.

So why not take classes yourself? or get a job?:confused3
Curious how you are supporting yourself-I remember reading about your job at the Mexican place in Florida.

I don't understand, do you go to the campus everyday when he is at school? If so, why not do as the previous poster said, take some classes yourself? If your son qualifies for a pell grant, you would probably qualify also.

OP, I can understand walking to the campus with him. Most college campuses are really nice. I know the ones around here all have these big beautiful trees to sit under and at USM the squirrels are almost tame! So they come right up to where you are sitting looking for food.

You really should think about taking some classes too. You may be eligble for the same financial aid as he is. If so, you could take just a couple of classes and still get enough to pay for the classes and books. I don't know if you already have a degree but there is always something interesting to be learned!!

Seriously? You follow your son to school every day and sit on a swing while he's in class? Seriously? :confused3

Not our squirrels... they throw acorns at you. Seriously. You will be walking along and BAM, acorn rain storm. You look up and they are looking down at you laughing...

The university campus is amazingly pretty. I can't wait till he goes there. It's supposed be one of the nicest in the state.

I'm not going to school, because A) I've already been to community college, B) I don't qualify as a resident yet. I have to wait one year. Along with getting resident rates, I'd be eligible for more grant money and such. So it's not a very good decision from a financial standpoint for me to attend until next fall. And I do plan on attending, if only to help him pass his math class. That was the only subject I was good at in HS and still am, so I wouldn't mind taking more.

And what's wrong with playing in a park?? Walking around?? Getting fresh air?? It's better than staying at home. And until you become an HR manager in one of those stores near his school, and you hire me... I can't do much about not having a job other than putting my application in.

I like fresh air, I like laying in the grass reading a book, I like swinging on a swing, I like walking... What's wrong with the outdoors?? Or are all of you so confined to your little cubical that you've forgotten what fresh air smells like??

I would be sad if one of my dds said this. (Although, I would be happy if they were good in math!) I assume you are talking about going back to school to help a boyfriend pass a math class that he has already taken once.

It's good to go back to school, but my unsolicited advice to you is to take classes for yourself, for your own future prospects, career goals, life goals. Stand on your own two feet and make your own way through school and life.

Good luck and I hope everything works out.

Math is the only subject I'm good in. So what's it to you if I attend to help him out?? He'd help me out the same way if I was taking an english class. But I'm not about to spend money on a class that I know I wouldn't pass in the first place.

This topic isn't about me or what I'm doing. It's about him, and getting his financial aid. I think I've received all the advice I need.

Absolutely. You can't count on other people to take care of you. It's great to help your friend (boyfriend?), but instead of wasting time walking and sitting in a park while he is in class, why not take classes of your own. You don't have to go the traditional route, you can take vocational classes;cooking, electronics, computers, vet tech, etc. Wouldn' that be a better use of your tiem?

I apologize for offending you. You said yourself you had difficulty getting a job out there. I just thought it would be a good idea for you to take classes for your own goals, and hopefully make yourself employable at a good job, rather than sitting around waiting for your boyfriend to get out of class.

Again I'm sorry I offended you. It really isn't my business. I was just posting an opinion and you can freely ignore me!

I think we have the same squirrels as you do! Ours are scary.

I always find it funny when tour buses dump tourists out on our campuses. I guess when you are there everyday, it really doesn't seem like the kind of place that is a tourist stop. It's nice and all, but I could not imagine spending the day there (to be fair, if I didn't have a job, I cannot imagine spending the whole day doing nothing, rather than looking for a job).

??

Tutors dont have to actually attend a class to help someone

If this is his 8th semester-he has spent 4 years at a junior college? I'd think he has enough credits already to go into the Regular University

Maybe pell grant has a limitation on how long you can use it at a Junior college?

No limitations on how long you can receive it. As long as you're not going for anything higher than a BA.

And I meant, if the only thing that comes out of taking a couple math classes is helping him pass, then it'd be worth it to me. Just helping him isn't that entertaining for me, so I figured it'd be fun to take it as well. And as bright and as smart as Kari was, she spent 5 years between University of Miami and Community College and still doesn't have an AA. Not every one can do the whole BA in 4 years thing. He's got like 81 credits already, and only 60 will transfer when he goes to the University, but he has to pass math first. He decided to put it off till last, and wound up having to drop the math class last semester for other reasons. Trust me, he complains all the time about being stuck at the CC till he finishes it. And if he wanted to, he could dual enroll, but then he'd loose his grant money, and going to the University is going to be expensive. So it's not wise to loose that money.

My DD rcvd a pell grant and as far as I know it went straight to the school without problems.
I am not following all the financial aid for her, she is 18 and it is her responsibility to figure it out and do what is needed to get the money where it needs to go. All I have done so far is co sign a government Parent Plus loan for a couple thousand that she needed to borrow after all her aid. (after she got all the info from the school!)

The school cannot release any info of any kind to any one but the student without them signing a release.

I know, he has to go in and talk to them. But right now, we're all looking at a black and white piece of paper, and making sure every one is seeing black and white. Because everything seems to be in order, but no one has been able to figure out why there's been no communication from the school on when his check is coming. This is the first time this has happened.

I'm sure if your DD had a few questions, you'd be happy to look it over and make sure it was done right if her financial aid didn't come yet. As far as everything else concerning school, he takes care of it, and does it on his own. I don't meddle with it.

And since the Pell Grant is a federal grant, I was wondering if there was some delay from the source there that he's not finding on the internet. It appears that his check fell somewhere in the cracks, and now he has to go figure out which crack it fell down.
