Any landscapers/expert gardeners?

I have questions about lawn care for a 1/2 St Augustine 1/2 Bahia lawn. The people who we bought our house from were replacing the Bahia with St Augustine plugs and sod as it was turning brown. My husband says its too late in the season to use fertilizer. The first day in the house, I ran over a sprinkler head so the grass didn't get watered for a week until my husband bought a replacement so I have a large brown patch right in front. I planted some plugs and water every day but don't really know what I am doing. Help!!!
