Any insight on Southwest Airlines?

I'm needing to book flights for my cruise March 31 thru April 8 and I have LUV Vouchers with Southwest that I want to use. But of course that week the prices are sky high and most of the flights don't have wanna get away fares (it says unavailable). I'm getting nervous because it's less than 3 months away. Should I just buy the tickets even though they are $$$$ or hold out for a price drop?

I would purchase them. You can always change your flight to the cheaper one (even if it's the same exact flight) and get the credit back. Unfortunately, that's a week that's unlikely to drop due to demand and they typical only drop prices to fill that demand. The fact the wanna get away fares are already all sold out tells me it's already a packed flight, so prices are unlikely to drop.

I think they aren't sold out of wanna get away fares. They don't say sold out. It just says unavailable. I have $1500 in voucher credits. Which you would think would get a family of four from ohio to florida, but even with that much credit, I'd have to pay out of pocket. The amount I'd have to pay out of pocket I could probably pay less if I just book flights with an airline like frontier or spirit. Thanks for your advice!

I fly Southwest exclusively through work and typically if it says unavailable, it means they've sold their allotment of those lower fares and are only selling the higher ones. Now that doesn't mean someone isn't going to move or cancel their flight that was on the wanna get away fares in the coming weeks and they won't open back up. Given the time frame you're wanting to fly and sounds like you're flying to a very popular destination in Orlando, it's highly unlikely you'll see much of a fare decrease. Luckily, you aren't losing anything by booking the flights as you can cancel and change up until the day before. Small tip as well, if you're not doing the wanna get away fare, you should be able to make same day changes free of charge, so if there's a lower fare for a less desired departure time, you can book that and then it's probable you'll be able to make the change to the better departure time on that day. It's a gamble, but depends on the price differences if there is one.

I watched flights from Ohio to Florida quadruple since the end of December for March/April. I got anxious and booked a non-ideal flight while I could. There was a time that 6-12 weeks would be a good sweet spot, but it isn't looking like it for spring travel.

Same. I've been watching spring break prices (across all airlines) for a couple of months now and they just keep getting higher. I finally booked last week, and I know I overpaid, but the flights were getting full and I didn't want to be stuck with no options.

Southwest has been nuts lately! A while back I was checking for a one way flight from Orlando to SFO and it was $401, then it went to $446. I bought it the other day for $291. Now it's up to $338. I'm glad I waited, but it is so hard to know when to purchase!

Good luck!

I agree with booking now. Then you can keep an eye on prices and, if they drop, just rebook the flights (it's super easy to do on SW) and you get a credit back (note, it's not a refund, it's a credit). I've done that loads of times. I also agree with others that the price isn't likely to go down based on the time of year, but you never know and this way you'd be covered either way!

With Southwest I would book now. If the price goes down you can always get the difference. Popular routes sell fast and their allotted seats for Wanna Get Away fares get taken up. Book them and keep an eye on them. For out trip this past September, our flight to Miami kept going down and I ended up with a combo of points and a large bunch of cash (I had bought refundable tickets one way). Our trip down to Orlando coming up for May doesn't appear to be decreasing in price at all. I bought those back in October. Keeping an eye on it. If you want to use the vouchers, I would book now.

I agree with the other posters... the fares are simply unlikely to go down during Holy Week (week before Easter), so book now before the either go up even more or sell out. On the odd chance they go down, you can always rebook.

If you have a large group, you MIGHT consider breaking your group in pairs (or threes), making sure you keep a parent with each kid. For fall break, I could book a "Wanna Get Away" fare for two people, but not all four. So I booked myself and my son on a cheaper fare and my wife and daughter on the higher fare. (She had extra flight credits to use.) So we saved a little that way, though it made check-in a little more of a PITA. The cool thing is that I kept checking and someone cancelled their "Wanna Get Away" fare down the line, so I rebooked them with the cheaper fare, which ended up paying for most of our summer cruise airfare coming up.

I just booked our family of five on Southwest for our August trip to WDW. After seeing the prices of a lot of other airlines (AA, Delta, and UA) not being close and Frontier being "cheaper" until I added bags, I thought I would just book Southwest now. While I was hoping to wait a bit longer, we have hard dates already for the trip and I wanted specific flight times at the WGA price.

I ended up booking as well. I also looked at the the other airline and saw their prices were high. Thankfully my vouchers offset some of the cost. However without the voucher, my flights total cost the same amount as what it cost to fly to hawaii last year which is insane. Part of the issue is my husband can't take off work the day before the cruise. He's a teacher and they won't allow you to take vacation days before or after a holiday/spring break. And I'm definitely not taking the chance of flying in the morning of. So our flying window was short.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

A word of warning that airlines ... Southwest included ... have a tendency to change their flights. We booked Southwest last spring break, and then about 6 weeks out, they cancelled our Sunday morning non-stop flight home and tried to reschedule us on an evening flight home that didn't arrive well after midnight. I quickly rescheduled us on their afternoon flights, which at least allowed the kids to get home at a reasonable time and get to school the next morning.

This is a good tip; always check your flight times, especially as you get closer. You should get an email if they change it, but that doesn't always happen. But, if they do change the flight schedule and it's a significant enough change, they should also let you switch flights free of charge.

Actually, if they only change your flight time by 5 minutes, it will allow you to rebook on any flight free of charge (even if the new flight was more expensive). We've had this work to our advantage on SW a few times!

Ah, okay. I couldn't remember if they would let you do that for any flight time change they made, or if there was a threshold for what would be considered 'significant' enough to be disruptive (and therefore necessitate a change on the traveler's part). I know I've had my flight times change by small amounts before, I never really looked if I could rebook because that didn't seem to be a big deal for me.

I have the opposite opinion - I'd hold off just a little longer for them to discount spring. Nothing past mid February is discounted yet. There will likely be some deals.

That said, what others have said is correct. If you fly Southwest somewhat regularly and are concerned about the price getting worse, you can book now and re-book for future credit later.

I remember once we booked a flight at a time we didn't really want because it was cheaper. Then it changed by only a small amount (literally 5-10 minutes) and we rebooked for the time we wanted. Normally, we probably wouldn't have checked either, glad we did!
