Do we have any info on Costa Maya for the special cruises? For instance, do we tender or dock? Is this a port where everyone must clear immigration early in the morning whether or not you are getting off just then? (Haven't i read this happens?) I am so excited about 2X Castaway Cay but not so excited about Mexico since I have experienced what a dangerous, corrupt place it can be. Is there much to do that is not far from the ship?

Thanks

P.S. Costa Maya is not in my Passporter. Is it in the new one yet?

Hi, we went to Costa Maya this past Oct. We were not tendered. There is a very long dock and they have a free shuttle to us should you choose not to walk. It definitely wasn't a favorite port. My dd got eaten alive by bugs and got back to the ship with welts. No, you don't need to go through immigration for this port. It is a fairly new port that Disney started using when Grand Cayman was destroyed by the hurricane. You can walk into a nice little shopping mall from the ship. The shops surround a big huge pool. We didn't shop as we went into the village of Mahahual (sp) for a beach day.

I am the DD who got eaten alive, although my dad and I did have fun snorkeling and they allowed you to run with the horses, I much rather would have stayed on the ship and enjoyed it.

So, bug spray is a definite on the packing list. Thanks for the info. Is this the port that the Red Cross won't let you give blood after visiting because of the malaria?

This is the port that prohibits you from giving blood if you visit there. I will say--I am normally eaten alive by mosquitoes--they love me, even if no one else gets bitten, I look like I've been flogged with welts. I used Cutter family insect repellent towelettes and had NO bite. They come in a small container with an orange lid, and you rub the towelettes over you--I swear OFF has never worked like these.

I loved Costa Maya--we did the Chacoben (sp?) ruins tour through DCL and loved it.

Here are some pics of Costa Maya that we took....they have a very nice shopping plaza....we just walked around and didn't do any excursions. We had no bug problems (September)...they also have a salt water swimming pool right in the shopping area that looked very inviting. It is a new port in general and I think if you leave the shopping plaza area (tourist area) you will encounter much poverty and there were reports of some of the local trying to rip people off so just be wary as in most areas that rely on tourists.....so if you venture out without an excursion be very careful.

We were also on an October DCL cruise that was rerouted to Costa Maya. We did the Chacchoban ruins on our own and LOVED it. If you want more detail, I did a trip report (see thread http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=679797) - The Costa Maya info is down a ways under the title "Tuesday, October 26: Kids, Ruins and Deep Woods Off"

There were definitely bugs - but Deep Woods Off did the trick for us! The area is still mostly "jungle" and if it has been rainy (the locals told us it had been raining for days before we arrived) there are bound to be bugs. We thought it was fantastic to see this area of Mexico that has NOT been developed into a total tourist center YET. It looks/sounds like that is the ultimate plan for this area - personally, I like it as it is - there already plenty of shopping, tourist motels and Hard Rock Cafes at every other port.

Can you compare Costa Maya to Nassau for me? Were/are the two places about the same? Are the people as aggressive? What about the shopping was it reasonable? Was it worth getting off the ship?

OK - haven't been to Nasau, but I wouldn't think it would have much in common with Costa Maya. Nassau has been a tourist destination for decades - Costa Maya is a brand new destination built in a jungle next to a tiny village.

Basically, the Mexican gov't has decided that Costa Maya would be a good location for the next Cancun. About 30 or 40 years ago, Cancun was an unheard of little village in Mexico - then their gov't did a study to determine the "best" location to develope a tourist destination and began to build/promote Cancun. Costa Maya is a similar idea but is only in its very first stages.

The port itself is a large pier where the cruiseships can dock without having to tender. They run a tram on the dock so you don't have to walk all the way in to the shore. At the shore they have built a "fake" village (It doesn't look at all authentic) which has most of the usuall cruise port stores. There is also a pool (maybe 2?) and they provide some "local" entertainment such as dancers or a donkey ride. There are restaurants and restrooms and many cruisers seem perfectly happy with this. There is a "beach" there also, but it looked pretty rocky.

One of the advantages of Costa Maya is that there are some neat excursions you can do from there. Good snorkeling should be possible since there is a famous reef offshore a little ways. There are good beaches up and down the coast - so excursions to those should be possible. There are mayan ruins in the area that are still being excavated - we took a trip to the Chocchoban ruins and it was one of the highlights of our trip. However, I am certain they aren't for everyone - if you aren't interested in archeaology or mayan history, then dealing with the longish bus/taxi ride, mosquitos, etc. wouldn't be worth it for you. Our group had a blast! Since Costa Maya is so new, the excursion options aren't all that developed yet - there aren't a lot of independent companies there or even that many for the cruise lines to hire!

About 2 miles from the Costa Maya port is a small village named Majahual. This small town had been a very isolated little place for a long time. Even now, their nearest "large" town for shopping is a couple hours away. It is rapidly growing and will certainly change over the next few years as the port becomes more popular. There is a beach along the front of the town and many slightly more adventurous cruisers have taken the taxi into town and enjoyed a day at that beach. There are restaurants setup along it and I have been told that as long as you buy something (some beer, lunch, etc.) that you are free to use their chairs, palapas, etc. I think there are even a little company or two that rent beach toys like waverunners, kayaks, etc.

This ended up being a little long, but I just don't think you can really compare Costa Maya and Nassau - they are in two different worlds right now. I hope this helped ....

After reading pdarrah's post it sounds like Costa Maya isn't as commercialized or over touristy as Nassau... YEAH! :smooth:

We were there w/ Princess in Oct. No bug problem.
Chokchobben ruins are terrific! In a lush jungle area, so not as hot as many others. Plus they are still excavating, so neat to see. If you are at all interested in ruins, take this excursion!
We headed back to the small commercial area at port & actually would have liked to spend some time there, but a storm was headed in, so we headed back to the ship. Turned out to be a short squall--we could have spent some time on port.
I will say--the soldiers w/ guns as we arrived was a bit unnerving!
Great port!
Happpy cruising!
