I'm so excited, :woohoo: I've been trying to talk him into a home party for years, but he always wants chuck-e-cheese, laser-tag, or dinorex. Well, this year he agreed to a science party! (because he's going to be an inventor when he grows up of course)

I'm having a blast finding ideas, but thought I could always use more.

Invitations are out already. He wants a volcano cake, if anybody has any tips on that? And we're going to do lots of experiments!

BTW, the party is on the 18th, so I don't have much time!

Thanks everybody!

Static Electricity (need: balloons, aluminum soda can)
1. Have them blow up their balloons and rub them in their hair to make their hair rise with the electricity.
2. Set soda can on a hard surface so it can roll. Use one of the rubbed balloons and move it closer to the can. Does it move the can?
3. Will the rubbed balloon stick to a wall?

Why?
Molecules are charged (+ and -). Normally, the amounts equal each other, they are neutral or have no charge. When one type moves, it makes electricity. Objects with the opposite charge will be attracted to each other. Objects with the same charge will move apart.

A Shocking Experience

Make a "ball of oil" by filling a glass jar half full of water, slowly
adding a layer of rubbing alcohol (floats on top of the water) and then
dropping in a tablespoon of oil. It's heavier than the alcohol but lighter
than the water, and if it gets equal pressure from all sides, it makes a
cool sphere.

Make your own single cell organisms(Pizza) Bowls of Placibos(candy) Blue punch in beakers. Halloween skeletons. Have a table set up as a lab.

How much fun! party:

Make punch and buy dry ice and have the smoke come out of it like scientists.....I will try to think of else :)

Print out picture of Einstien & Eddison ect & put on kitchen cabinets. If you have a blackboard or poster board print out equations.

I love a party with a theme!

For the volcano cake, look for recipes for Molten Lava Cake. It won't explode, unless you consider the effects it might have on your young guests. If you want to have a volcano, you can either buy a kit, or you can just make homemade dough (or use old playdough) and form a mountain. Leave a hole in the middle. If you have some plastic tubing, thread this through the mountain. Put baking soda in the hole on the mountain, then put vinegar in the tube (you can even dye the vinegar red with food coloring for effect if you wish). Welcome volcano! (Be sure to use lots of plastic to protect your surfaces!) If you don't have plastic tubing, you can just pour the vinegar on top of the baking soda...it gives pretty much the same effect, although with less splattering.

Good luck! My son is having a birthday party that same day...although without volcanoes.

The Chik-Fil-A here had a science night not to long ago - the scientist they had did not neat experiments. And she does birthday parties too! Maybe you could check the phone book or ask the local science museum? I'm not sure she would fly up to your place! ;)

But I like the home-made ideas being suggested.

My son also made Oobleck in class:

Check with the science museum and see if they do birthday parties, I know the one that we go to does. DS's boyscout den is having a sleepover at the science museum.

:thumbsup2 Thanks Dis'ers ! You guys ROCK! :woohoo:

You've given me some great new ideas. And help finding details for ideas I already had. I'll try to post a picture or 2 after the event.

Keep the ideas coming!

We just had a "mad science" birthday for DS10. He(and his guests) LOVED it. It was done by a company that came to our house and put on the whole party for us and we found it pretty inexpensive for what was included. Their website is www.madscience.org

We have a mad science around here. My DS has taken their after school classes and is going to their science camp over spring break. They're great!

I enjoy doing the parties myself. I threw my DD a fantastic Harry Potter party a few years ago. I really love searching for the ideas. What were your son's favorite experiments at his party?

Well, they did a lot of stuff with lasers and electricity. Probably the biggest hit were the glasses(cheap paper/plastic ones) that when you look through them they act kind of like a prism and all the lights look like rainbows and stuff. The kids were all nuts for them! If you can buy those from Mad Science it would probably be a good investment. They also liked the trick with the water in the cup that disappeared(it actually turned into some kind of putty or something) and they liked making the slime.

Good luck with your party!
