Tonight my DD 14 blacked out for no apparent reason. DD, my sister and I were talking in the kitchen. I was partially turned away from her when, from the corner of my eye I saw her start to fall. She made no effort to break her fall and struck her face on the cabinet as she fell. She came around almost immediately and could not say what happened.
DH wanted to take her straight to the ER but DD insisted we not go tonight and as she seemed ok other than being a little pale I reluctantly agreed to watch and see how she felt as the evening progressed. She has been a little quiet and stayed pale all night and has a bruise where she hit her face. Her pulse has seemed to be steady and strong. She had not yet had dinner when she fainted but had eaten a decent lunch.
What would make a healthy 14 year old faint. She has complained of heartburn a couple of times in the last week but a Tums always seemed to help. I know she had a good lunch. She does not have a fever or any other sighs of a virus. She doesn't date yet. It is scary to see your baby girl fall on her face like that. Anyone have any thoughts?

Update
I want to thank everyone once again for their concern. DD and I spent the afternoon at her doctors office getting a good checkup. Her heart, lungs, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc. were all fine. She did have a low grade fever and when he questioned her she admitted to having a slight sore throat. This has been a recurring problem for several months. His diagnosis was allergies that caused a slight sinus drip that got into the inner ear and caused the blackout. She has a bruise on her chin and a sore tongue where she bit it when she fell. He prescribed medication for the sinus drip and told her if she felt dizzy at all to immediately sit down. He also recommended going to an allergy specialist if this problem does not clear up soon.
I'm just relived that he did not fell it is anything any more serious.

so sorry. if it were me the child would be seen at the e.r. (weather she wanted to be or not). when a person faints it is important that they be seen quickly so that the md can get a full picture of what is going on with their body at the time the event occurs.

i have fainted due to panic attacks (and had stomach pains or "heart burn" around the same time), i've had it happen because of overexerting myself and not eating timely (more when i was in college). but i also had it occur due to a sudden blood pressure change and prior to having a stroke.

don't mean to scare you-but it is important to have this type of thing checked out sooner vs. later.

I am guessing the Dark Dancer is your DD

here is what she posted tonight

Well, I sisn't want to ruin Christmas for my family so I said I was fine.

her post sounds like she is scared but doesn't want to ruin Christmas -

Did you at least call your doctor? I would call him/her and see what they think and then follow their advice - if you don't want to call her doctor in the middle of the night then you should go to the ER now

(offtopic-) I misspelled didn't.

I really do feel fine, though! :goodvibes

We have had many instances of our healthy teenage daughter passing out on us.

Nothing was ever found to be causing these blackouts. Scary though they are, she once passed out in the shower and fell right through the shower doors.

The doctors told us that faints in teenage girls can be caused by hormone fluctuations.

Thanks for the answers. I do intend to take Sarah to her doctor tomorrow. I did not call him tonight but did talk to DILs mother who is a recovery room RN and knows my Sarah well. She advised watching her closely tonight and going in tomorrow unless something else occurred tonight. Believe me, this is our baby and we are probably getting on her nerves asking how she feels now. She seems to be fine other than the bruise. Thanks again - sometimes when you get a huge scare it is nice to talk to friends.

Well, I don't mean to scare you, but please take her to the doc asap, I had the same issues while ago, one day I just blacked out, I went to the doc the next day, after all the regular test, he send me to have a MRI, and I had a glad in my brain not working well, I can't spell the name, but this gland controls the hormons, periods etc. I have to take pills, I hate them, bcs they make me so sick, Bromocroptin I think is the name, not sure of the spelling.

Pituitary?

Anytime anyone loses consciousness, they should be seen immediatly by a doctor....not to scare you, but thats the way it is..

hope she's okay

I remember fainting twice way back in middle school for no apparent reason. I am fine now some 30 years later.

I would call the doctor today but certainly not panic.

I fainted a few times when I was about that age. It would usually happen when I had my period. Once was when I had ridden my bike about 3 miles to a store and I passed out when I was in the store. Another time was when I stood up after laying in the sun. After the 3rd time I was taken to the er and was told it was caused by a combination of hormones and heat / over exerting.
You said she was in the kitchen....was the stove on at the time?

Not to be accusatory or suspicious (honestly just trying to be helpful here), but BOTH of my sisters had fainting spells in their teens. BOth of them had heart burn. One of them was also a dancer. And they both had eating disorders...bulemia to be specific.

PLEASE don't be offended.

I am just offering possibilities that should not be ruled out no matter how well you think you know your daughter. I thought I knew my sisters and my parenst thought they knew their daughters too. They were quite the expert at hiding what they were doing...

I agree with take her to the doctor, but don't be surprised if they don't find anything. I used to faint like that too around that age. Was it hot in the kitchen? That was one thing that would trigger me off.

Good Luck, let us know what happens.

i went through tons of test for my fainting spells back in the days. LOL. Turned out to be asthma. My youngest has fainted twice so far. If she gets ups too quickly or similar.

:)

It is unusual for anyone to faint and there can be benign or serious causes for it. Anyone who faints should be evaluated by a doctor for heart problems, eating disorders, seizures, and low blood sugar. Don't let your daughter talk you out of seeing a doctor--this is important. She may not be the best judge of how to deal with this.

I promise that I don't have any eating disorder. I like my body and I don't think I should change anything about it. I may be a bit curvy but, I've accepted my curves. :)

The stove was not on because last night we ordered pizza. :confused3

And the weather is pretty chilly here....So I don't think it was heat. :confused3

Nothing else happend last night...but, I don't know. :confused3

My DM (OP) will keep y'all posted. I'm on my way to the doctor.

Thanks for the help y'all!

My best friend fainted in a hotel room and caught her chin on her thumb nail. Ended up needing stitches. Driving to the ER in the middle of the night in a strange city as she was away on business.

She went to see her regular doctor that week and nothing was ever found to be the cause.

I would definitely have her checked. Hope all is well.

Just wanted to reassure you that sometimes it really is nothing.

I remember fainting my self about 4 or 5 times, a couple as a child, and a few more as a teenager. My parents never took me to the doctor or etc.

I'm fine now.
