I know it comes down to measurements and material choices, but just trying to get an idea. with installation. average sized kitchen, not looking for the most expensive just looking to get rid of the heinous green that is currently there.

Our granite countertop and backsplash was over $15,000.
Our course Formica would only be a fraction of that.
We had some neighbors that painted their Formica w/an epoxy paint. Might be a less costly option.

You can cover whatever is there with ceramic tile squares. Plain tiles are very inexpensive and easy to install. If you hired someone to install the tile, maybe $100 for tiles and $4 a sf to install. Tile is easy to put down yourself though.

We recently looked at some of the less expensive stiff at Lowe's, so that we can get rid of the ugly orangey-red countertops that we have, which are coming apart anyway. We are planning on just going with a basic laminate countertop. It comes attached to the wooden base, so you completely remove your existing countertop and replace it with this. At Lowe's, you could buy it in pre-cut lengths (various lengths available) or you can custom order the precise pieces for your kitchen, which we are going to have to do because our counter has an L that comes out and kind of divides the kitchen and dining areas. To custom order it, it is going to cost us $27 per linear foot.

HOLY MOLY!!!! Thank you for bursting my bubble - I've been dying to get granite countertops for my kitchen, but I hadn't priced anything yet. (I watch way too much HGTV and it seems most of the houses they show have granite countertops!) I've have lots of countertop in my kitchen, too, so I bet my would be at least that.

I am so jealous now!

We are pricing out Cambria (quartz) countertop for our kitchen island. We were told as a rough price that pretty much any solid surface countertop, ie. quartz, granit, corian, is going to run around $60 - $70 a square foot. Our Cambria was $65.

I think I read that laminate is in the $20 range per square foot.

Our granite countertop and backsplash was over $15,000.

Holy Crap! Did you get it with gold trim?!?!?!?
I have 2 neighbors who both did their kitchens in granite and both spent less than $3000. Unless you have a 5,000 square foot kitchen!!! We are considering doing the same. Prices vary, so get quotes from various companies.

This is what we did in our kitchen. We put the same ceramic tile on the floor and on the countertop. Lauri also got some different tiles and broke them up along with some of the tile we used on the counter and made a mosaic backsplash.

Talk to the folks at Home Depot or Lowe's. They should be able to talk you through it easily, or go to one of the how-to clinics at Home Depot and find out about putting it on the countertops.

I know a LOT of people install their own tile because the most expensive thing about having it installed is the labor.

LOL, Dan! $15,000 does seem like an awful lot, though. We are currently looking at redoing our countertops in granite and I think I calculated it would be around $3000 (without the backsplash) and we have a fairly large kitchen.

We just did granite countertops in our kitchen and our 2 bathrooms including our master bathroom and it only cost $2800.00 total for all the rooms. I have 2 kitchen islands and a pretty good hunk of regular counter space in my kitchen. My front guest bathroom was tiny but my master bath has double sinks and vanity. I can't even imagine spending $15,000.00 for a kitchen. OUCH!

Whew! I sure am glad to hear others got granite countertops for lots less. Guess I can start considering it again!

We just replaced our countertops with granite last year and it cost us about $3500, we did not do a backsplash. We did get the most expensive cut though for the edges.

We have quite a bit of counter space and I REALLY wanted granite. It runs about $55 - $75 per linear foot (which is 2 feet deep per foot). This is includes the installation.

Laminate/formica, if you can install it yourself, is very affordable. This is the route we took at our house since we knew we'd probably move before we got our money's worth out of the granite. We paid a little over $700 and DH did all the work. The estimates for granite were all around $5000. We love the outcome. However, DH is VERY handy and hated doing this, so be warned that it is not an especially easy task, even for a seasoned home repair junky. We went with "Mesa something" from Home Depot. We had to special order the island and desk area counters. If you need to get laminate installed, the prices start at $49 per linear foot. To be honest, you might as well go with granite (or Corian or Silstone, etc) at that small price difference.

Of course, doing this project was ensured that we would move sooner rather than later. We even joked about it while we were doing it. "You know as soon as we get this in we'll find a house we like..." and boom --sure enough we did. We are building our dream home now and I'm getting my granite!!

Average for a new countertop.

Two - three trips to WDW at Grand Floridian on the conseirge floor.

Have you thought about contact paper. Costs about $3.00 a roll.

LOL, Dan! Ours is going to be less than $90 a Sq ft for a total of around $6000, so it isn't all so bad!

Dan, Dan, Dan...after all Lady M has been through - the least you could do is get her granite countertops!

Dan ~ your post was absolutely priceless! Thanks so much for the laugh!

Anyway, we have about 31.5 ft of counter space & a couple months ago we priced Corian (being that it was a tad less expensive than Granite) which was on sale & we were looking at aproximately $7000 (which included new sink & faucet too.) That included installation also ~ all priced out from Lowe's. We decided to wait. It's not necessary, I just wanted something easier to care for. I currently have white counter/cabinets. You can see every spot on the white, that is why I was looking for a change but after pricing the new counter out, I figured I can live with a spot or two!

Mishetta - That price sounds about double of what it should have been. I have heard up to $100 per square foot depending on what you pick. For 31.5 square feet, that would be about $3,200. With sink and faucet that should top out at around $4,000. Shop around. Lowes and Home Depot do not necessarily have the best prices. My sister priced out standard cabinets at Home Depot when she was remodeling her kitchan and found that she could have custom ones made at a local cabinet maker for less. Shop around, yu maybe surprised at what you find. Jay

In terms of maintence and cost, ceramic is so easy to care for. There are now grouts that come with epoxy which keep it from staining. You can put as many hot pots right on it and there is never a problem, no sealing, and an endless variety of colors and patterns. We just install it right over formica/laminate.

If you do go with the granite, you could put up a tile backsplash.

One more option is to use grantite tiles instead of slabs. They are laid very close together and are not ANYWHERE near the cost of slabs. We used this on our island. It was laid with similar ease to ceramic or porcelian tiles, except with a different adhesive.
