Any "health-conscious" Dining Reviews???

There will be yogurt and fruit but LOTS of sweet/high carb items like sweet rolls, bagels, etc. That part can be disappointing. My favorite thing to eat in the lounges tends to be fresh pineapple and berries, yogurt and banana w/ peanut butter (they have the Smucker's single serving pkgs) so that I have the protein...

I was going to say the exact same thing! :rotfl:

The BWI CL lounge had the worst breakfast offerings. Sugary cereals, breakfast pastries, fruit and bagels. It was pretty pathetic.

I would stop by the QS restaurant and pick up some hard boiled eggs to keep in your room fridge. I also had brought some high fiber instant oatmeal from home. Just add hot water.

Don't get me wrong, I ate a few of those mini cinnamon rolls some mornings. But when you're there for 10 days, enough is enough. :rotfl2:

A friend who lost a lot of weight on weight watchers, told me her leader suggested dining at Peco Bills and Cosmic Rays, places that have fix-ins bars. Order a burger (protein :thumbsup2), ditch the roll and make a salad out of it. I've done it a few time. It's a nice change from all the "junk" food.

You might want to browse the WISH board, dieters have the best tips :goodvibes

I completely understand what you mean, it's all about moderation and that's what I try to do on vacation. You can't eat cr@p every day especially if you're staying 8 or more days.

goofygal,

Great idea about the eggs! An egg and some fruit and I'm good to go.:)

We'll be there for 10 days (2 diff CLs) and I agree -- it's just way too many days to not watch the junk intake.

What kind of high-fiber oatmeal did you take with you? I might bring some of that along as well. My DD could live on oatmeal, yogurt and fruit.:)

Of course, we'll try some of the other stuff, too, but not a ton of it and not everyday.

And great idea about the fixings bars -- I never even thought of that!

I've been eating the Quaker Instant Weight Control Oatmeal lately. It has less sugar and higher fiber in it. Although regular oatmeal is supposed to be best, I don't think you'll be wanting to make that while at WDW ;)-I actually split a packet in half and then add some sliced banana, blueberries and sliced almonds with a sprinkle of cinnamon. OK, sounds like a lot to pack but you can probably get the fruit at the resort.

And I also have to say I TOTALLY agree with the poster who mentioned to check out the menus on ALLEARS.NET. I do that too and it really helps me plan what healthier items are available at the restaurants we plan to eat at. Makes it easier to know ahead of time what's available...:thumbsup2

the best place for healthy food that's also tasty is Sunshine Seasons in the Land pavilion in Epcot.

Yep! :thumbsup2 This was one of the easiest places for me to eat well (I'm vegan) but if you are vegetarian or vegan, the soups all have chicken broth, just an FYI.

Table service was best b/c I could cater my food better, they were willing to make me separate dishes with just veggies and rice, etc. but counter service was difficult! Everything seems to be fried! Ick.

I had the hardest time at MK I think, but I pulled it off the two times we ate there. Cosmic Rays had a veggie wrap that was good and the 2nd time when that side was closed, I just got a veggie burger with no bun and used lots of condiments (mushrooms, onions, & tomatoes) from the condiment bar on top of it! Most places had salad too, but not all, make sure you look at a menu list before going and have a plan!

Bringing healthy snacks helped us too. "healthier" snack bars or even some fruit in our bag with our water worked well for us.

I've looked over the menus multiple times (even before making our ADRs 3 months ago), but all of these ideas are great! We're carrying some fruit and water with us each day, so we dont plan to have to buy our snacks (unless someone in the family wants a special treat;)). It's better to get to choose your treats where & when you want them than be stuck eating fried foods everywhere.;)

What kind of high-fiber oatmeal did you take with you?

Quaker makes a new High Fiber oatmeal that's actually pretty good.

My friend Nicki stayed at AKL-CL recently and posted some photos of the CL offerings. They do have oatmeal! :thumbsup2 It looks like a really nice spread (very jealous, BWI's CL was awful!) They also have rice krispies and raisin bran. My DS2 can live on rice krispies :rotfl:

It's just so strange how each CL has completely different food offerings.

Even at WDW I eat pretty much the same as at home. I find the 2 best restaurants for overall healthy food are BOMA and Tusker House. The food is very similar. There are a lot of vegetable dishes and things like couscous and humus.

Marrakesh and the Garden Grill are good choices in Epcot. As others have said, Sunshine Seasons in the Land pavilion is also a great CS option because there are a lot of healthy options.

If you are a vegetarian or vegan I believe any sit down restaurant will find a way to make something for you.

I think it is a good idea to go here or here and check out some menus ahead of time so you know your options.

At the other restaurants you can usually find a way to eat healthy. Making small changes, like getting the food in France without the heavy sauces, can make anything better for you.

I think with a little attention you can eat very healthy at WDW. Good luck.

For me it's about portion control more than what I eat. I have lost 16 pounds, hope to have another 5-7 gone by our trip, and plan to share meals with DH. He is used to this now. :goodvibes If I try to get too "diety" I find myself craving junk.

Great post mmmears and I've got some good tips from this thread :thumbsup2

I'm loosing weight, I've lost 50lbs so far and have about another 38lbs to go and don't want to undo any of my hard work while we're in Florida so I'll be looking for healthy options too.

I could only find one link for low-carbers, but unfortunately you might have already seen it. I searched maybe 100 different ways, so I'm sorry. :sad1: Here it is:

I do have more links though for healthy eating low-carbers might find them helpful too :woohoo::

I'll keep looking! While I'm here though I would like to give some hints too (sorry if they have already been posted)

Tangeriene Cafe's veggie platter is healthy and delicious!

The yogurt parfaits are yummy that Disney sells practically averywhere.

Fresh fruit is always avaliable.

If you are craving something salty, I one time saw some whole pickles for sale.

Baked potatoes in Liberty Square are something different.

Columbia Harbour House sells a healthy hummus and broccoli slaw sandwhich and some veggie chili.

Hotels sometimes sell PowerBars.

If you want to splurge sample a bit some of Disney's sugar free candy... or the whole bag. :yay:

Keep this thread rollin'! :goodvibes

Thanks, TinkTatoo! Congrats on your weight loss! I've been losing alot, too, and still have a ways to go. I've really changed what I enjoy eating and I'm hoping to find some healthy things that I like at WDW. No need to ruin my health just because we want to go to WDW on vacation! Hopefully, between all the walking, choosing carefully, sharing meals, and asking them to put the sauces on the side I'll do ok.

VillainVogue -- awsome ideas and links! Thanks so much for helping find these options! I really appreciate it!

I'm the same and know that I don't want to have burgers and fries as my park lunch every day. I'll be looking to you for inspiration so hopefully you can post when you get back and tell us how easy or difficult it was to make healthy choices :thumbsup2

In the Magic Kingdom there are 3 fruit stands: One on Main Street, in Liberty Square, and
Mickey's Toontown Fair.

At Epcot, fruit is available on the lower level of The Land in Future World and at the Outpost
between China and Germany in World Showcase.

MGM has Anaheim Produce on Sunset Blvd.

Animal Kingdom offers fresh fruit at Harambe Market in Africa, just outside of Kilimanjaro
Safaris.

Fruit and cream shouldn't be too difficult to come by at most TS...
That makes a nice dessert.

Whenever we go I try to order Fish that is either Grilled or
non-fried. I love fish and it is healthy if it is cooked right.
I also try to order a side saled and not French Fries (sometimes
it's hard to resist). The hardest thing is that we get the DP
and now Dessert is included (there are very few low calarie desserts).
I have been pouring over the TS menus for ideas.

I'm very careful when eating out because not only of the hidden fat/calories, but I also tend to get sick easily when I eat out - I never eat out at home - I have a very sensitive stomach.

My tips are:

Always choose something with a protein - If you are always getting salads, you aren't going to get the energy you need to walk these parks, not to mention the fat/calories that are hidden in the dressings... they can add up to eating a whopper, even when you get it on the side and drizzle. Stick to a lean meat such as chicken, GRILLED, not fried or BBQ, and a sensible carb, such as a baked potato, instead of fries or mashed. When I ate meat, I would get the chicken, and splurge a little and get the fries cuz I never eat them.

I tend to avoid fish and fruits because I get scared that they are tainted. It's so easy for fish to spoil and I've gotten food poisoning too many times from fish ordered in restaurants (not disney). Yes I'm a little obsessive LOL. But if you have no problem, BROILED or GRILLED fish is a sensible high protein option.

Stay away from all red meat (beef, pork). It's not good for you anyways.

These are just some tips, but to be honest, you won't be enjoying the true atmosphere. It's nice to splurge a little bit and get some things you normally wouldn't eat, because you're paying so much for this food - you don't want blah.

Eat some desserts - PORTION SIZE is important! Don't ever eat the entire plate - just half is plenty. Maybe even 1/4! Remember you walk 5-6 miles aday in the parks and playing hard in the water parks! I always maintain if not lost a couple pounds when I'm there. I almost always eat the "blah" no fat food, but two or three times I'll splurge. We have the dining plan this time so hopefully I'll get my money's worth and NOT get sick! LOL

I am glad to see this thread. I eat healthy and wont change for vacation. I will allow more treats but once you start healthier eating, you enjoy junk less(at least I do)
Ill lean towards skipping sides or having a salad or fruit as a side. Not fried foods(I just hate them anyway, and I dont like french fries!)Ill look for the ideas here for chicken wraps, and beana nd veggie dishes. I also will eat a healthy breakfast before I go in(have a kitchen) and Ill bring carrot sticks, grapes or bananas and water. I dont drink soda either so non issue with me(but I do have to watch beer:rolleyes1)

Isn't it great how, if you eat things that are better for you, you stop liking the bad stuff? I have no desire for lots of fried foods, although I'm sure I'll have a few fries.;) We're planning on taking a piece of fruit from the club lounge each morning & snack on it when we're at the parks.

:thumbsup2 Absolutely. I can seriously have a bite of something sweet and feel satisfied. :cloud9:
