Hi. I've been working really hard to improve my health and lose weight. I love looking at all the dining reviews here, but I'm wondering if there are any posted by people trying to eat healthily at WDW? Just hoping to read reviews and see photos of the less caloric/less fatty choices at WDW.

If you can point me in the direction of some of these (if they even exist:rotfl: ), I would really appreciate it.
:)

I try to eat healthy when I am at home.

One of the things that I look forward to while on vacation at WDW (or vacation anywhere else), is eating new things, or indulging myself on those special treats I don't get at home. I don't go totally hogwild, but feel that vacation is the time to loosen things up a bit.

I think that may be why you didn't get all the "healthy" responses you were looking for.

Whenever we go I try to order Fish that is either Grilled or
non-fried. I love fish and it is healthy if it is cooked right.
I also try to order a side saled and not French Fries (sometimes
it's hard to resist). The hardest thing is that we get the DP
and now Dessert is included (there are very few low calarie desserts).
I have been pouring over the TS menus for ideas.

I realize that most people splurge on vacation, but I was hoping to find just one "healthier" response (not a lot of them).:)

Well, make sure you do a report when you come back. With lots of pics. You only have 2 weeks to go! Have fun!:thumbsup2

Since we go in July we tend towards seafood-trying to keep it light. I have not found a great salad yet. But there is tons of seafood available- just make sure you stick to the grilled items. The deep fried lobster at Blue Zoo is one I am dying to try but that sure isn't healthy. :rotfl2:

I generally am a day on day off kind of eater when we are there. Really just because of the heat not for any "health" reason to be honest. I am anxious to try the veggie lasagna at Chefs- don't know how healthy that is either.

I actually tried a few "light" dishes at various restaurants when we went in January. I had cannellini bean brsuchetta at Tutto, Mushroom Ravioli in mushroom broth at Le Cellier. The thing is...if you look through the menus you will definitely see things that aren't just salad on the menus. Almost all of the restaurants serve some kind of grilled or seared fish that is great. Ask for the sauce on the side to control the calories like my DGF does.

Have fun and don't worry too much about the calories and heaviness of the dishes. WDW is making huge strides in what they have begun serving at their restaurants to accomodate everyone of every eating style (except for kids).

Try these

Le Cellier

Brown Derby

Tutto Italia

Hallelujah sister! That is exactly what I was going to say

My DMom tends to be the healthy one in our group so here are some options:

Wolfgang Puck Express - The Chinois Chicken Salad is to die for!

Kona Cafe - The sushi (very good for you) is fantastic. DMom also gets the Kona Salad with Grilled Chicken, it has the BEST marinade on it :thumbsup2

Tokyo Dining - yummy starter salad, shrimp cocktail, edamame (steamed soybeans)

Dole whip! Well it might not be healthy but its "healthier" than Mickey bars or popcorn etc..

In most CS places they will offer apple slices or carrot sticks in the place of fries.

Liberty Tree Tavern - the colony salad is yummy too!

A lot of stands sell fruit and water. The Liberty Square Market has some really healthy options for snacks like baked potatoes and corn on the cob (or they used to)

I recommend these links if you are looking to be healthy at Disney.

You might also want to look for the The Healthy Guide to Walt Disney World 2009: How to Eat Right and Stay Fit in Disney I for one, did not care for the book, but it did have decent information. I think if you really are watching what you eat and if you exercise than this would be a perfect book for you. disney also of course is perfectly willing to accomodate those on low-cal and low-fat diets at any restaurant you go to (and others as well :)) Hope this helps! :goodvibes

Thank you to those of you who responded with ideas and helpful suggestions. I really appreciate it! We're not dieting, but eating healthily, and I just dont see the need to shove junk in my face and feel sick from it while on vacation. :rotfl: I'll be checking all those links and hopefully they will help us. I'm know I'm not the only one out there who cares about this.:)

You might also search the site for "healthy" - I know I've read threads on healthy snacks and CS options. You could also consider reading some of the reviews from vegetarians. I sometimes like to read the options they find and see if I get ideas from them.

We tend to eat fairly healthy, mostly because it's what we prefer. Although I do love me some french fries at times! My biggest weakness probably!

Anyway, I've found the best place for healthy food that's also tasty is Sunshine Seasons in the Land pavilion in Epcot. The food is very fresh and tasty. Last time we were there my mom and I both got salads, she the roasted beet and I got the seared tuna salad. They were both really good! They also have a California roll that's really good and a nice fruit salad (what my DD had for lunch).
Columbia Harbour House has a great sandwich called the Lighthouse that has hummus and broccoli slaw, it's really very good.

The veggie burger at Sci-Fi is good, the fries are really good, but not very healthy!

Veggie/Pasta entree at CRT is really good too.

Trying to think of other things I've had around WDW

I usually lose or maintain my weight at WDW. I do not over indulge but I do eat 3 meals a day with snacks. I try to pick up the pace in exercise so, I can have all the treats. My problem is when I get home I'm not as active and I put on the weight because I eat like I'm still at WDW. ;-)

evantamy,

Thanks for the suggestions -- I hadn't even considered Sunshine Seasons -- now we'll definitely check it out. We really prefer to eat this way, too. Plus, my stomach can't handle the drastic change in the amount of fat, grease, sodium all that well.

OurDogCisco,

(Un)fortunately we exercise alot at home, so I dont think I'll be able to do enough walking at WDW to lose weight, but I truly hope I'm wrong!:)

In the last year or 2 I've lost a pretty good amount of weight and even at WDW I am very conscious about what I eat. OK, I do splurge a bit but most of the time I do watch it.

At the sitdowns I tend to get a salad and an appetizer for dinner rather than ordering a whole dinner entree. If I do get an entree I usually order fish and any sauces or dressings for that matter I always ask for on the side. Any CS restaurants I just try to stay away from pizza or anything fried.

We now also tend to stay at the DVC resorts so that we have kitchen facilities available even in the studios. Most mornings we eat in our room to save time AND calories. I eat what I would eat at home. We'll now usually do 1 character breakfast the whole trip (and even in that day we'll do a light lunch). Never more than 1 buffet in a day. I even try to limit them for each trip. I always pack a small bag of nuts for a snack.

I also try to limit the alcohol and although many people feel like they walk miles and miles everyday (which you do, but it really isn't a cardio work-out) I try to fit in a run every other morning or a quick gym workout in the morning.

Since I've lost the weight we've gone to WDW several times and I've never returned with a weight gain unlike prior to my weightloss...;) and I also still keep my food journal while I'm there. It just helps keep things in check and under conrol.:thumbsup2

One of the best new restaurants that I can recommend though for those that are health conscious is The Wave. We enjoyed it very much our last visit. The arctic char was awesome! We plan to return there during our trip next month.

I just wanted to add that I see you're staying at AKL. They have a nice little workout gym there.;)

Great response!:thumbsup2 I've also lost quite a bit in the last year-and-a-half by making more of a lifestyle change than dieting. So your info is really helpful. I'm thinking of going to the AKL gym and GF gym (from Poly) if I can't get enough exercise (although my feet are usually aching when at WDW!).

We're staying CL, so I'm hoping to find easy breakfast foods in the lounge. And my DD and I are planning on splitting entrees. But the "sauce on the side" advice is really great! We're going out to one meal a day, and only one character buffet for the whole trip.

At this point, the icky-fatty-fried foods dont appeal to me at all. I love looking at the dining reviews, but wish there were more with the healthier food options shown.

Thanks, everyone, for helping me out! I'm taking notes and will have all of this info on our trip!:)

I just got back and came home three pounds lighter. Whoohoo! Here's what I did. I split almost every meal with my ten year old son. For sit down we opted for grilled items chicken, steak etc with veggies for me and potatoes for him. I tried to avoid all fried stuff at all cost which is difficult.

At our hotel, Beach Club, we ate at the pool twice at Hurricane Hannah's. Great selections there... salads, veggie wraps, etc. One day I had the kid's meal of Turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato, with grapes and carrots on the side. It was just what I was looking for. Try ordering the kids meal at counter service.

I agree with the advice of the previous posters. One location i didn't notice was the Rose and Crown. My husband had the vegetable curry and said it was his favorite meal.

At the Cape May breakfast buffet I loaded up on fruit. With a side of eggs it was a very healthy breakfast.

Have a great trip!

I like to "splurge" on vacation and I don't necessarily try to order healthy menu items (though sometimes that's what I want anyway), but I do watch portion sizes! I try not to feel guilty about not finishing meals since usually we are on the go and I don't want to carry around a doggy bag. If I get a side of fries, I try to only eat half of them. I will order kids CS meals for breakfast. Not only are they smaller, but they come with applesauce.

And I also order a case of water bottles and have it shipped to the resort. If I carry a bottle with me in the parks, I'm much less likely to order a soda at counter service meals, saving calories and money.
