any gun experts?

I had a honest need for information is the reason that I started this thread. I didn't say or ask anything that is inappropriate. I own one hangun & am planning on getting a second one legally. I then plan to re-new my gun permit for a concealed weapon. I didn't ask how to buy an illegal gun or anything. I was honest in the title of the thread, so if the topic of guns offends you, I suggest not reading it. I truly appreciate all the advice that I have gotten here.

Why did you have to get that from a Phillipines newspaper? This actually happened about 1 hour from my city, yes I am in Winnipeg.

So you are saying that if you would have had a gun you would have shot the guy? What if you would have missed and shot an innocent child? Besides, according to greyhound.com all firearms are not permitted on the bus, they must be checked. So, a gun wouldn't even be on board the bus to be used.

It was the first one on Bing. :confused3 I am reasonably certain when those folks got on that bus, they never, ever imagined what the future held. I bet at least a few of them were wishing for a gun.

I don't carry when I go places that don't allow guns, for example my college. I respect their right to make those conditions. However, I am more than willing to use my gun in defense of my family or even some anti-gun stranger. My DH is a police officer and I used to be a deputy sheriff. People have threatened us. Criminals have threatened DH saying they would come to his house when he wasn't home. (Thought I think the threat lost some of it's point, when the jail staff laughed. :confused3) It is clear neither of us are likely to change our minds on this subject. So, since this is a gun thread, you might want to mosey on along.

To anyone who wants a gun for self defense: You need to do some real soul searching and KNOW if it comes down to it.... Could you kill another person? If you don't know... don't get a gun.

I thought of a funny joke that I heard Jeff Foxworthy say once, "If you break into my house, I will shoot you. My wife would shoot you & then fuss at you for bleeding on her carpet." Hits home for a lot of us

I'm sure you know this but you can shoot .38's out of it. I shoot low power ones out of my lightweight snub .357's sometimes, especially if there is someone new to shooting with me ans they want to shoot them. A lot less recoil, but still allows you to learn the trigger.

This is the only place I've admitted this but my husband bought me a hammerless Ruger SP101 .357 magnum. I got my concealed weapon license but rarely do I carry it. This gun has more kick but I like it that it's powerful. I keep thinking that if God forbid I have to use it to defend myself, I want to wound the guy badly and not just ouch him so that I can get away without him having the strength to come after me after he's been shot.

The army did test on all calibers of ammunition for pistols, including exploding cartridges, and they found that placement was far more important than caliber and the only place you could shoot someone and have them instantly go down was the head, the spine and the long bones of the legs. So in other words a .22 in the brain had the same effect as blowing the head off with a .44 magnum and a .44 in the chest would probably kill an assailant eventually but still give them a chance to damage you before they died. For weight and money you would be better off with a .22 that you learned to shoot accurately. It's light, no kick and does the job. In the Mossad European assassination campaign known as Operation Wrath Of God the .22 pistol was the weapon of choice. The other advantage is that .22 bullets are very inexpensive compared to those larger calibers so you can practice regularly without breaking the bank.

When I go into an area that could be dicey I have a .22 pistol that fits in between my wallet and my butt. If someone wants my wallet they'll get it and more.

If you spend time at home alone a 12 gauge shotgun in the bedroom is perfect. The sound of a slide being engaged is enough to send anyone but a total psycho running in the opposite direction.
So you are saying that if you would have had a gun you would have shot the guy? What if you would have missed and shot an innocent child?

What if he would have started stabbing an innocent child, what would you do?

Do you think Greyhound allows knives big enough to behead someone? I hate to point out the obvious but criminals don't care what Greyhound wants checked. Your mistake is thinking like a law-abiding citizen.

When I was first learning to shoot I did indeed use .38s out of my Ruger .357! There is a definite difference in recoil between the two. I have learned so much. When I first started shooting, I thought kick had to do with the gun only and not the ammunition used. Same gun, different kinds of kicks (recoil) due to the .38s vs the .357s. I stuck with the .357 because I liked the power. It took me a while to get used to it, but I handle it very well now.

To the lady who doesn't like this thread, I was a victim twice of assaults by strangers who broke into my home in the middle of the night when my husband was away for special military training. I won't go into details but it was horrible what was done to me and by God's help I got over it. My husband and I decided that I must be able to protect myself and never have to beg for mercy from a couple of animals again.

Anyway the Ruger fits very well in my hand, conceals well, and is powerful enough to do the job if God forbid someone tried to assault me again.

I knew I was doing something wrong.

Sorry, but I don't really think this is an appropriate thread for a family Disney board.
Wow. This thread ALMOST made it to page 3 before the naysaying started. I could have sworn it would have been before post #7.

I've decided to stop with my opinion on this thread, that should be quite obvious. Nice attempt at :stir: though.

Bye, bye. Hate to see ya go! :lmao:

I would think dragging this thread into other threads would be stirring the pot.

You have a point, but you should also recognize that the .22 is a much less powerful round. From a few feet away, you might not get the affect that you want. A .22 might glaze off the bad guy's skull where a more powerful round will find it's way inside to put him down.

To the OP's question, my choice is a Browning BDA 380. It's been out of manufacture for a few years, but new ones and great condition used ones can still be found fairly easily.

To illustrate my point here is an article from today's paper. Notice the caliber of the weapon and its effect.

A would be robbery in Kanawha County had the tables turned when he went to hold up a video-lottery parlor early Wednesday morning.

Kanawha County Deputies say the suspect had his face covered with a bandana and was armed with a shotgun when he burst into Theresa's Cafe in Pinch, ordering everyone to the floor and demanding money.

"As soon as the patrons hit the floor, one employee retrieved a .44 caliber and quickly stood up firing a shot striking the subject in the arm and torso area," said Kanawha County Chief Deputy Johnny Rutherford. "The suspect then immediately fled the store, apparently quite surprised."

Rutherford said the employee and the suspect exchanged more gunshots in the parking lot before he fled in a vehicle.

Now notice the .44 didn't stop him. Real life isn't a Dirty Harry movie. On the other hand do you think the bad guy had the time to notice that he was being shot with a high caliber gun or he was being shot, period?

Oh I heard him do another version of that joke. "If you break into my house, I will shoot you. My wife will shoot you and then spend 20 minutes telling you WHY she shot you." Very funny, I love him

To the OP I have no advice for you because I do not know how to fire a gun and I do not own any. I would Love to learn how though if someone would teach me. My DH OTH really has no interest in guns. So everything I know about guns right now comes from the Jack Reacher books.

I don't know if you say one of my earlier posts, but some people who live close to us had a home invasion. The intruders had an AK 47 assalt rifle, the home owner had a 22 pistol. There were several shots fired. The intruders didn't hit anything. The home owner took one of them out & injured another. I guess he was a better shot & he got lucky.

I think I have my choice narrowed down to the air weight 38 or the 380. I may use the 38 that I have now for my class. I'm not sure what types of guns they are providing except I know they start with a 22 Magnum.

Thanks, but I don't plan on putting myself into any situations where I need to be "protected" by a gun.

The bad part is you don't know when or will you may need that kinda protection. This is not a perfect world and they are alot of criminals out there that really don't give a d***!!That's what I get out of this thread.

The only way you will be safe is when you lock your door and never leave your house.Criminals are all around us and they don't care where your at.
The only thing I'm trying too say is,you or family are never safe when it comes too crime. My family rather be prepared then not.Just like almost all the posters are trying to say, thats all.

But like the OP stated,if you pull it be prepared to use it!!!

I hope you understand!!

I think you phrased that well. It's not like we are planning to go out & find someone to shoot. We just want protection.

Thank you.If everyone felt the sameway, there would'nt be any arguing on this topic.

Actually, locking your door doesn't guaranty your safety. There was an incident a couple of towns over from us where the woman and her daughter were in a locked home when intruders broke in. Mom was killed and her daughter was severely injured.
