Any Great Ideas for Displaying Pins?

I am not a big pin collector but I do have a small collection of DVC PINS that I treasure. I have a Beach Club one from when we purchased DVC and Saratoga Springs I got for taking the tour. A friend gave me a cruise one and I bought two of the ones that say "Members are Magical." My collection will never be very big but I would like to display them and am coming up short on ideas for how to do this. Anyone have a DVC pin collection they have proudly displayed? How are they organized and hung? I would like to mount the pins on a board or fabric then get them behind glass but be able to get in to add a few more over the years...Any ideas? Thanks!

Go to your local Target or Arts & Crafts store & either purchase a pre-made shadow box frame (rather expensive) or visit a discount store & purchase a printer's box/curio. They're usually less than $10. Remove the various inserts, for the backing get a piece of foam & black velvet & cut to fit the display box. I've gotten quite a few compliments on my home-made frame; moreso than the pricier version.

My DS prefers to leave them on a lanyard, he's particularly fond of one with a huge Stitch medallion on it - it's quite heavy. I have no idea how someone could wear it around their neck all day.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a couple of shadow boxes with teeny things in them, but never thought of them for the pins. If I have it right, you mean to remove the little inserts that make the various "cubby holes" so you can put in the foam/velvet, then replace the inserts so each pin goes in its own little "box?" That will work great! We have Michael's crafts and Hobby Lobby here and one of those will surely have the frames.

Thanks!

Or, just get a regular frame. Get the foam core board that framing shops dry mount posters on (you can usually find it next to poster board in the grocery store). You can either cover it with fabric (wrapped around and glued on the back), or you can get a frame store to dry mount a sheet of scrapbooking paper to the foam core board.

Then, you simply stick the pins onto the board. I have heard of people cutting out the center and putting pictures of themselves in the center. There are a LOT of WDW scrapbook papers that are really cute.

Then, you can just stick the foam core into a regular frame. It can get thick on the backside, so you might take it to a framing store and let them show you how they would attach it to the frame (there are lots of choices for this sold at framing stores).

I have a DVC powder room :)

Anyway, hanging on the wall I have a plastic DVC license plate. I push all of the pins around the plate and hang it back up. It is by far the best room in the house!!

I have organized my pins by park, DVC resorts, etc. I got some cork board squares in the school/office supply part of Wal-Mart. I have plans to put the icon on each of the park boards. Then you can simply put the pin into the cork. I found two boards glued or stuck together in some stable fashion, works better than a single board. Then I figure out a way to place them on the wall.

Colleen - Actually, I didn't replace the inserts, just stuck the pins onto the foam/velvet (easy to re-arrange them into groups) and shut the glass door of the shadow box.
Beca - I tried using a regular frame but couldn't get it to work because the pins wouldn't fit under the glass without touching/scratching it.

A while ago Kellogs had a banner that was supposed to have mini bean bags attached to it (We took them off), but it works great for our pins. It's red, feltlike material with the 4 park logos on it, and it hangs from a dowel that has Mickey ears on each end--It also says kellogs, but we covered that up with pins. You could easily do this, just get some plain fabric (heavy weight or put some thin foam backing on it) You could even make a border with fabric. All I have to say is that it is better than the washcloth my DH put all his pins on when he first started collecting--it was impromptu. For a small collection though I like the shadow box idea--I'm sure you can find some without the inserts.

During my last trip I bought all of the 50th celebration pins with the mirror frame and the pictures of the different castles. We too were wondering how to display these.

So, one day I was walking around in Wal-mart and noticed some shadow boxes (small and large) on clearance for about $8.00. Well, I got one and brought it home... I figured out where I wanted to put each pin and then drilled a small hole thru the back of the box. Then I used some velcro to hold the pins in place. Since I got the bigger box, we printed off an actual picture of the Mirror Frame on the castle and the placed it in the center of the shadow box. I think it turned out pretty good, now I just need to figure out where to hang it.

If I remember, I'll take a picture of it to post. :teeth:

Here's the display we made for our 50th celebration pins:

Still no idea where I'm going to hang it...

WOW! I love how it turned out! Thanks for posting the pic. I am off to the hobby store today to get some ideas. A friend here reminded me that they sell some special shadow boxes, I think they are for military medals or ribbons that kids win in competitions? I might purchase one of those, or at least see them for some ideas.

I am getting more creative about where to hang my Disney stuff. Even the bathrooms are not off limits! :)

Thanks again everyone for the great suggestions.

Thanks...

Hrmm... maybe I can find a nice place for it in my office...

Or maybe in my bedroom. I did have van gogh prints hanging in there, but I've already started taking those down to put up disney stuff. Eventually I'll finish off my attic and have PLENTY of room to hang this stuff. :teeth:

Meanwhile, maybe I could "rent" it out for other peoples walls. :teeth:

ok - so this is kinday tacky, and it sure wouldn't look as good on a wall! But I like to get Mickey ears and put all the pins all over them and then hang them up!

When I was working, after many years, I had accumulated a number of plaques, certificates, patents, etc on the office wall, all of which I kept when I retired. I used one of the frames that had a certificate in it, removed the certificate and put in a cardboard backing and some red velvet, and stuck the pins in. It looks pretty decent.

I used the picture frame idea, I just don't use the glass. I have one photo framed with a mat, and I inserted the pins into the mat. The others are just pins. One is a collage frame, so each pin has it's own spot. They hang in our office and actually look very nice if I do say so myself.

DS keeps his on a cloud shaped bulletin board we got at Target a few years back.

Also, a few years ago we purchased a picture frame at WDW that had cork on it. They don't sell it anymore, and I don't know why. We all need something for displaying our pins.

using corkboard is a good idea... you could get it and cover it with some fabric remnants then just stick the pins in there and put it in a frame... I'll have to remember that when I get more pins :teeth:

I made a bell pull out of tapestry type fabric about 6-8 inches wide and 4 feet long. It hangs by a decorative cord and has a tassel on the end. We just push the pins through and put the back on. This way we can always take them off if we would like to wear them.

I found a perfect shadow box at Michael's Crafts. It is shallow for displaying coins and stamps so it will be nice for the pins. They had various sizes. It came with a mounting board but that looked really cheap so I will cover it in fabric or velvet. The front opens so I can add pins or remove them for wearing. I think it would be smart for WDW to sell special Disney-themed display boxes.

i wear all mine on a Vest that we bought yrs ago in Disneyland. The only way the pin can make it on the vest is if i phyiscally have been there. I do the same thing with all the hats DVC has given me. I cover them and wear them in rotation when we go to Disney. I even have a Disney Hawaii pin hat.
