Any good "southern" appetizer recipes?

Growing up there were always cheese straws at weddings
I have never had them with anything but cheddar cheese -I don't think the parmesan ones were popular in GA.

Commercial ones don't taste anything like homemade.
Commercial ones taste kind of like a cheese-nip or cheese-its cracker.
Homemade ones are a bit softer and denser -more like shortbread like arminnie said.
let me go find my recipe....

Here it is -When I went to get it I told my husband "Someone on the dis has never had cheese straws" and he said "Bless their heart"

SUPER CHEESE STRAWS

1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
4 c. finely grated sharp cheddar cheese
2 1/2 c. all purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dry mustard
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
Paprika

Cream butter and shortening until soft.(Either with a mixer or food processor)
Add cheese; mix well. Sift flour, salt, mustard, cayenne together. Add in three additions. Assemble cookie press with cheese dough. Fit with decorative discs and press onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees or until just starting to turn golden brown at edges. Carefully transfer to wire rack for cooling. Sprinkle with paprika.

He is a southern gentleman, for sure!

I really need to try home made ones, the ones I got at the store were allegedly baked by someone the south, but they were really bad.

That was my first reaction too - except that I had it happen once before.

I told someone that I would bring cheese straws to an event. She had no idea what I was talking about - and this was a older, high society woman in San Francisco.

You can hardly have a proper social event in the South (even if it's just the church sewing circle) without serving cheese straws. It's like an unwritten law.

I'm originally from way down south - New Orleans - and I never heard of cheese straws while growing up. I tried them a few years back since we now live in Florida but they are not one of my favorites. :confused3

Our Southern Dinner party was great! We brought the mushroom/sausage appetizers. All but 1 were eaten. For dinner we had:
Burgoo
Fried Chicken
Garlic smashed potatoes
cornbread
tomato/onion salad
cole slaw
sweet potato pie
the beer and bourbon were optional

ETA. Whats burgoo? :confused3 I know, I am pathetic :sad2:

as far as comercial cheese straws go, the bodacious brand is very good. They are made locally (or at were, if the company has grow much, they might have relocated)
