Any experience with texting on Navigator App

Can someone tell me how this app works? Specifically, do I need to be connected to a network? I want to put my iPhone into airplane mode to assure I do not rack up any cell charges...will the app work in airplane mode?

Thanks :)

Just download the Naviagator app. You will text in that. You won't need to use your wifi.

There was like a 10 hour period on one of the WBPC days when their whole system went down. Affected the app, and stuff like being able to buy things on the ship. Other than that, the texting function works beautifully! No more wave phones for us. We were so excited about how well it works. And how easy it is to add other people to it for easy texting (i.e. people in other cabins). We just wished there was a group texting option. So when someone spotted the ice cream flavors for the day they only had to text once and not text everyone in the group!

We used on the Fantasy in May and again on the Magic in June/July. It worked great!

We used it on the Wonder 2 weeks ago and found it very temperamental. I always gave my teens a time they needed to check in with us as a back up in case they weren't receiving our texts.

Was on the three night wonder cruise, no connection for two days, app was useless. Have to carry the room phone around.

I have read a few people say that they didn't get notifications when a new text comes in.

Can anyone speak to that? Did you get a notification and what did that look like on an iPhone?

I am confused and wonder how the app works if I don't pay for wifi onboard and have cell service turned off. I'm just worried about incurring charges while using the app.

You put your phone in airplane mode and then turn on wi-fi and connect to the ships INTRANET. This is free. You will not be able to access anything else unless you buy an internet package or signup for the free 50mb package on the first day. As long is your phone is in airplane mode you will not incur any charges.

You can use the free boat Internet for the app and texting inside the app. If you want Internet for anything else, you have to pay for it. I had the phone on airplane mode the whole time, except when we were in STT and SJ since they are part of the sprint network and covered in our plan.

We used the app with our iPhones on our July 18 Fantasy 7 night. Worked great--it was nice to have the navigator in hand wherever you went and we stayed in touch with our very independent 12 yo. We never used the wave phones. Worked fine with phones in airplane mode.

We got notifications. Mom wasn't at first, and she went to guest services and it was because notifications were turned off on her phone. They showed her what setting to adjust and then she got all future notifications.

IT professionals can force people connecting on a network to view only certain approved content (these are approved "white" lists). If you try to access something other than the content they want you to see (for free) you will either get an error message or redirected to the webpage they want you to see.
Examples of this are:
1. Connecting to hotel internet. You can browse that hotels webpage (so you can sign up for their reqards program, book your next stay, check your rewards points) and maybe a local weather page with no problem. But will be asked to pay $10.95 per night if you want to view the rest of the internet.

2. Most airlines will allow you to access their webpages via the inflight internet with no charge (to check flight information, book another flight). But if you want to view something else you have to pay.

Disney Cruiseline has set up an internal ship network that allows you to access and only access the app. If you try to use any other app that requires a data connection (facetime, email, trip advisor) they won't work because you won't have the approval to use the outside network.

But what if you pay for external internet? Will you be using up your data to send text messages, see what time towel folding class is, and look at tomorrow nights menu? No. Because when you are using the app it will trigger the internal network not the external.

The too long didn't read summary is this: It's Disney Magic! :cheer2:

We're on the Wonder, and it's not working well for us- the texts are often delayed by hours - so completely defeats the purpose. We have not changed rooms or done anything like that, and we're both tech savvy - so we've given up on it.

Does this app work on non-smart phones? Where is this app found?

No.
It is an App that you have to download so designed to work on smartphones like an apple iPhone or samsung galaxy something.

You have two wave phones in your cabin, like cordless phones at home you can use those instead.

We used it with a very good experience on the Fantasy on our 8/1 cruise.

None of us (8) got notifications on our iPhones (8) in November which made us give up on the app after the first hour. We never used it after that although it would have been extremely useful. Do you remember which setting to change to enable notifications?

No, I wasn't with her when she took her phone to guest services and mine worked from the start. But guest services should have been able to help, and if needed could bring in their tech specialist. Next time if they aren't working suggest you go talk to them for help.
